HAGAR
annual report | 2009

from the ceo
Courage and excellence, two of Hagar’s core values, come
to mind when I reflect on 2009. As we emerge from the
impact of the global economic crisis, I am honored to know
Hagar staff and volunteers who made great sacrifices - financial
and otherwise - to ensure services continued for
every single client. With courage we faced our fears and
enemies, from the court room to the streets, in defense
of the world’s most vulnerable. And with courage we
took on challenging new client groups like child soldiers
in Afghanistan and made hard choices , consolidating
our social enterprises in the hospitality sector.
Hagar’s shelter opened in Kabul and provided care
for 40 abused, exploited and trafficked women and
children. The capacity of partner NGO staff increased
through Hagar workshops and training.
highlights
Hagar | 2009 Annual Report | 1
I hear a consistent theme from our many visitors, partners
and donors - they see excellence in Hagar staff, projects
and impact. Excellence is the rigour and professionalism
behind first-of-their-kind initiatives like programs for
sexually abused boys and women in prison. When
hundreds of people mobilize to search for one runaway
child, that is the pursuit of excellence. But it is most clear
in the transformation that takes place in our clients.
It is a profound experience to sit with a woman or
child from Hagar. When we fully grasp their journey
to wholeness, we are struck by the beauty and
excellence in their stories of transformation.
We see courage and excellence we see in the lives of
our clients and are transformed by them. Together we
share a common journey of being restored to what God
desires for our lives. Thank you for making Hagar part
of your story! If you are looking to enrich your own life
journey, we welcome you to join us in restoring
broken lives.
Our purpose is
singular; we
restore broken
lives.
We welcome the
toughest of human
conditions.
We stay focused on
the individual.
Hagar opened its Vietnam office in Hanoi and
supported the recovery of 12 women from
backgrounds of abuse and trafficking. Hagar also
trained dozens of staff from partner organisations how
to better care for survivors of abuse.
Hagar Cambodia pioneered two new programs; the
recovery of sexually abused boys and Community
Based Rehabilitation for children with intellectual
disabilities through integrated classrooms. Both
programs were the first of their kind in the country.
Hagar Social Enterprise Group (HSEG) was formed
and finalized stakeholder agreements with JOMA
Bakery Café, Hagar’s enterprise partner in Vietnam.
HSEG divested from So! Soya and Hagar On-Time,
while keeping the business’ stories alive through
partnerships with the new owners.
the horrors of war and
Hagar | 2009 Annual Report | 3
In 2009, Hagar was
privileged to share
hope and a future
with 40 trafficked,
abused and rejected
women and children.
Badria’s life changed forever when a construction worker renovating her
family’s home in Kabul barged into the room and raped her.
“He destroyed my identity,” she said.
Knowing the crime would bring deep shame to her family, Badria fled as
quickly as possible with her rapist to a small mosque in the city and married
him without telling her parents. Then she moved in with her new husband,
his first wife and their 10 children. Life soon became a nightmare of taunts,
beatings and insults.
When she was four months pregnant, she finally escaped and came to Hagar.
She joined other women and children on a long journey to healing. Badria has
discovered there is a different ending to her story. There is restored identity,
freedom from violence and abuse, and hope for the future.
“
He destroyed “
my identity.
“
I feel more self-confident and strong now...I have the
right to decide for myself what I can do and what I
want to do; to live a life without fear. -Trang
“
Sold and trafficked to China, Trang was rescued by her family and brought to live at a women’s shelter in northern
Vietnam. That’s where she learned the devastating news that she had contracted HIV. She joined Hagar’s Empowering
Women for Life program in Hanoi and has learned not just to cope, but to thrive.
12
45
women, all survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, faced the trauma of their pasts, and gained
new confidence through Hagar’s soft and hard skills training.
Vietnamese social workers and counselors learned how to better care for women who have experienced trauma
through Hagar training.
40 62
children with disabilities
received specialised education
and family support as
Hagar pioneered integrated
classrooms in two communities
through its Community Based
Rehabilitation program.
“Even though I still have problems,
my life is a lot better. I have
learned skills...and I can support
my child. I am not imprisoned by
my husband. I am able to send my
child to daycare. In the future I
want to have my own restaurant
and want to see my child finish her
education.
children experienced the love
of a family once again through
Hagar’s Community Based Care
program. Hagar’s commitment
to long term foster care ensures
children thrive, surrounded by
family and community as they
grow up.
“
-Sophea
Sophea knows what it is like to live in despair and terror,
locked in her own house and beaten every day by her
husband. But she also knows what it means to be safe
and strong. Today, two years after arriving at Hagar’s
Women’s Shelter in Phnom Penh, Sophea is resilient
and independent. She lives in community again; she is
literate; she is employed at a local coffee shop; she is a
dependable and caring parent.
Her smile says it all. She has everything she needs to
walk confidently into the future.
In 2009 Hagar Cambodia was part of the story of healing, empowerment and reintegration for more than 900 women and
children. Here are some of the highlights:
79
women and young people
gained one of the most
valuable tools required for
successful reintegration into
community: skills training and
employment apprenticeships
through Hagar’s Career
Pathways program.
“
I am really satisfied with my job.
I can stand on my own two feet.
I have more confidence, I have
skills, I have a job and I have
“
freedom.
Vannra and her children came to Hagar
after being abused by her husband and
brother in law. She now works as a cook
for Hagar Catering.
