Editorial
We are now half way through the season and have seen some great
racing already. The National Championship events have been well
attended and the racing fiercely competitive.
The down side of the season is the races that have had to be
cancelled due to policing problems. Both in LVRC races and BC
events. The sad thing is that all the good hard circuits that we know
and love seem to be dissapearing slowly.
On the editorial side of things I am
still getting comments about the
VL having a southern bias. This is not
an intentional thing but just down
to a lack of articles coming to me,
by whatever means from north of
the Watford Gap. I am quite
happy to accept anything. In fact
the last Northern article about
Alan Kemp was very well received.
I would particularly like to do more
coaching articles. I have a few ideas for
the winter months including an article
on pilates and body balance etc. I would
also like to do a rider/coach article and
have a few ideas but no guinea pigs. So
any contributions on that front would
be appreciated.
I hope you all enjoy the latest edition of the VL. I try to make the
news and features as interesting and informative as possible. If you
have any comments about how the publication could be made
better they would be much appreciated. Better still if you give me an
article I will publish it.
Good luck with the rest of the season.
See you up the road.
From the Chair
Don Parry
We are all now well into another
seasons racing. My experience is that
all the events have been well run with
good racing and well marshalled.
Thank you to all organisers and their
helpers.
Disappointingly we are starting to
see a number of events cancelled
due to Police refusing to give
permission. Nobody has any easy
answers for this although it does
seem to be worse in the North rather
than the South at the moment. I am
in touch with both TLI and BC and
information is shared. We are too
small to achieve much on our own
and so I believe this communication
channel is important for us on a
number of fronts.
All we can do in the short term is to
ensure we all behave as correctly as
possible in every respect to ensure
we do not provide ammunition for
the people who want to see road
racing driven off the roads.
The web based membership
registration process has settled
down and we are still having people
join at this stage of the season. There
will be another influx in preparation
for the Track Champs later in the year
and so I believe our membership will
show an increase year on year which
is healthy for the organisation.
I wish you all a continued safe,
successful and enjoyable summers
racing.
Number crunching
I am writing to comment about the Chairman's column in the Spring 2010 issue of the Leaguer magazine.
On the face of it, the number of races promoted by regions 1-4 seems remarkably low. An analysis of the population
figures (Office of National Statistics, 2001 census), shows that those regions only account for about 36% of the UK population,
so therefore we need to pro rata the race figures. Of the 142 races in the 2010 handbook, those regions promote 22
races, which, scaled for the population roughly equates to 42% of what could be done (51 races). Whilst the combined
regions 1-4 are well short, it's nowhere near as dire as the 16% that Don mentioned.
I can only speak of region two, and I hope I'm not speaking out of turn, but the shortage of races in the area was a major
topic at our last AGM. As well as long standing organisers retiring and ignorance or hostility from local authorities,
community groups and police, all led to our race numbers falling in the last couple of years. However, some new ideas
have led to a very positive response from members in the region, and some new organisers have come forward and we
certainly appreciate that.
Looking at the lack of races from a wider viewpoint, I think part of the problem is that the same people volunteer to organise
all the time. I bet every reader knows several individuals who, typically, will have organised for many years, have been
or are still probably involved with BC races or coaching as well as LVRC, TLI etc, is the "go to" person for advice in the area, is
an official of their own club, and has fulfilled countless other voluntary roles in their lives. A giver rather than a taker.
At the same time there's the guy's who turn up to race every week and have never ever marshalled, have never been
involved in running any event, never help with their club and never intend to, probably change clubs regularly according
to who's offering the best free jersey. You know the type? They probably outnumber the volunteer type guy at least three
to one.
In my opinion, these are the riders that need to change their selfish focus and step forward to take on some responsibility.
Untill they do so we'll all be struggling to build numbers any further.
Patrick Douglas - Treasurer Region 2 - Leeds Mercury CC
STOP PRESS - L.V.R.C. NATIONAL CYCLO CROSS
CHAMPIONSHIP - SUNDAY 19th DECEMBER 2010
Team MI Racing of Region 7 are promoting this National
Championship event which has not been organised for several
years. It is a new venue based on farm land in south Warwickshire
easily accessable from the M40, M1and M6 motorways. There is
a very good café and toilets on the site. The course is designed
to be suitable in all weathers and testing for both expert and
novice riders alike, not too technical but with several short
running sections. Mountain bikes will be allowed.
Approximately 50 minutes duration
the winner of each age category
will receive a Championship
Jersey and Championship medal
with additional medals for the
2nd and 3rd places. Depending
upon numbers of entries in each
category additional awards will also
be made.
There is another earlier event being
run on the same course on Saturday
20th November so it is easy for you
to try out the course before the
Championship.
Mick Ives will be the organiser for both events and full details
can be found in the 2010 Handbook. See LVRC website and the
Leaguer for more information nearer the time or email Mick on
and female members of 40 years of age and over
To all contributors
We welcome all contributions from anyone - letter, comments, results, articles,
reports, pictures, anything as long as it’s not just personal abuse - we can all
get plenty of that at home.
Our favourite way of getting material is by e-mail, but we’d much rather have
it handwritten than not at all. If you can type it or supply it on disk we’re even
happier. Word, .rtf, or ASCII are all fine.
If supplying pictures, please leave them separate from the document(s).
Preferably, photos should be in jpeg format.
News from the Regions
Region 4
Despite, unfortunately having to be switched to
Saturday Sept 4th due to a clash with motorbike
racing at Darley Moor, the Region 4, Manchester
Velo organised event has attracted a headline
sponsor. Bill Cotton, from Region 5 club Belper
BC has generously come forward with financial
backing via his Hungarian company Start
Up Solutions KFT. This is in addition to support
from Phil Griffiths’ company, Yellow who is donating
products to the prize list.
Organiser Jim Golden said:’ Despite the cock up
over the date, for which I must apologise I am
sure Region 4 will run a successful day for the
DEFGH riders who take part thanks in no small
part to those who have agreed to back the
events. Unfortunately the fact that the championships
have been moved to the date which
should have been occupied by the second of
the Cleansweep series means that there will
be no event for ABC riders, simply due to time
constraints.’
Once again new club Audlem CC put on a good
event for the first Stallard race of the season a
thoughtful innovation were the extra signs put
out to illustrate where the worst of the potholes
were on the circuit. Thanks again to Mike Wilson
and his team.
Jim Golden
Region 9
The season is now well under way with successful
events on the Region's three purpose-built
circuits. Ford's motor test circuit at Dunton is
also a success running on alternate Thursday
evenings with Hogg Hill. Fred Little reports
that a good few new members have joined us
through Dunton. Mike Cross confirms that that
Region's membership is holding up well with
500-ish paid-up so far. The National Handbooks
are in short supply so that recent joiners may
have experienced a delay in receiving them.
Hillingdon continues with Bill Butterworth's
events attracting large entries who will soon
be able to change in splendid new purposebuilt
premises now nearing completion. The
Fowlmead circuit at Deal is hosting the young
vets National Crit Championships so they have
well and truly arrived. Let's hope they get
the deserved support. The void left by Trevor
Maddern dropping out of promoting until later
this year, to enable him to return to racing, has
been partly filled with promotions by Rapha
Condor and Lesley Everest at Hogg Hill where
the initial problems with the sodding hill are
being resolved. The Finchley RT have also been
welcome new promoters on the road with
much help from Fred Little. The National EFG
Road Championships are scheduled for August
8th on the Region's Surrey Dunsfold circuit.
The organiser there is Richard Williamson. The
proposed purpose-built circuit at Gravesend is
on course with the inaugural event scheduled
for May 1st, 2012. You can follow the circuit's
progress on their website www.cyclopark.com.
When all these circuits are in operation the
possibility of an Inter-Circuit Championship
Series becomes a tantalising prospect with the
heaven sent opportunity for Norman Bright
to donate a suitable trophy to the winners.
Possibly a tea towel Norman ? An event well
worth recording occurred last summer at Hogg
Hill when Dave Burwood organised the George
Drewell Memorial Day. Possibly the biggest
crowd ever at an LV RC event enjoyed the
racing on probably the best Sunday of the
summer. With so much going on I missed the
action at the ladies' lap-top dancing, wet T-shirt
and mud-wrestling marquees but Arnie Russell
reported that they were very well-attended
and enjoyed by all. Another possible national
record that was broken on the day was the 45
riders (Please note Bill) who started the over
60's race with the evergreen Spit Godbeer
clocking in at 80 years old. The bastard. This
event was won by Barry Jones. 65 youngsters
started the children's race with Colin Roshier
powering away alone to win. Dave is running
the event again this year but lower in key and
in conjunction with the MStina event 10 on
August 15th at Horsmonden but he reports
it will be back again BIG in 2011. Well done
Dave it was a memorable day. Following on
from this success separate over 70's races
have now started this year at North Weald
but unfortunately not under League rules. The
oldest is still Spit but now at 81. The bastard.
If everybody eligible turned up we could
possibly get around 20 riders. (please note Bill).
Steve Watson reports that the MStina/Sharp
sponsored race series, held in conjunction with
Region 10, go from strength to strength with
over 200 riders signing on for the five events
held so far. Full results can be viewed on the
League's website. Some very welcome news is
that the bionic Dick Naylor of the Fairies is back
competing at the highest level again after his
argument with a car. Equally welcome news is
that Brian Dacey is returning to competition
after his recent flirtation with the Fairies. A big
welcome back Brian and Dick.
TEAM ENDURA - M.I. RACING EARLY SEASON 2 UP TEAM TT
MI Racing organised a new event on the LVRC calendar, a 21 miles
two up time trial held over the tough course to be used in October
for the LVRC National Time Trial Championship.
The event was promoted by Team Endura--Thule--Kinesis--M.I.Racing
DEREK SMITH MEMORIAL RR - CLECKHEATON
Organised by the Halifax Imperial Wheelers, this was the first running
of the Derek Smith Memorial RR on what was a new course for the
club based on Hartshead Moor near Cleckheaton.
In the A/B race it was Darren Otter (Rutland CC) who won in what
has become his signature fashion, alone and several minutes up on
his chasers. The winning move was made with 6 laps to go (of the
initial 10). Several riders immediately saw the danger and took chase.
It was to no avail, Darren soon gained time and held a group of what
was to become 3 chasers at over 2 minutes all the way to the finish.
In the sprint for second place Richard Binks (Holme Valley Wheelers)
beat the promoting club's Sean Smith (and Derek's son), these two
taking first and second place in the Bs respectively. Paul Dixon (VS
Cycles) finished fourth to claim second A.
Meanwhile John Hadfield (Rutland CC) took off alone in the latter
stages of the C/D race. He said afterwards that it was seeing his
team-mate Darren's solo efforts that had inspired him. It proved to
be a successful strategy as he too held off his chasers - winning the
race alone. Again a small group of chasers were sprinting it out for
second place with Paul Webster (Dinnington RC) getting the verdict
from Chris Miller of the Clayton Velo (who claimed first place in the
Ds). Mick Day of Paul Milnes Cycles finished fourth in the race and
second D.
In the E/F/G race it was the turn of Mick Holmes (Batley CC) to solo
to victory with Phil Etches (Witham Wheelers) and Kev Shand (West
Pennine) having to settle for second and third respectively. First F
was Jeff Hardy and, in what is becoming something of a habit, Jack
Watson of MI Racing won the first G prize.
Derek Smith's MI Racing team-mates kindly donated a trophy to
the race in his honour. The cup was presented to the winner of the
E/F/G race - Derek's contemporaries. And so it was fitting that local
rider Mick Holmes received the trophy from Derek's widow, Pauline.
In response, Mick was able to recall early memories of Derek and was
clearly honoured to be the first recipient of the trophy.
TOUR OF THE ABBERLEYS 3 DAY.
CDEF race report from Alan Kemp
Stage 1 Time Trial of 3 miles approx.
Straight out from bottom of Woodbury Hill , about ½ mile uphill to
start followed by a few undulations before a very fast descent to
finish just short of Martley . That was soon over and we did far more
miles warming up and riding back up the horrible hill to the HQ at
Abberley.
1st Andy Donaldson 07.30, 2nd Robin Haigh 07.31, 3rd Marcus
Walker 07.40 About 14 riders finished within 30 seconds of the
winner.
Stage 2 44 miles increased to 55 at the start, started 2 hours after
the TT and was 5 complete laps of the circuit from Woodbury Hill to
Martley , left to Castle Hill, then Ockeridge and Martley again. Last lap
we went through Martley to finish on the top of Berrow Green Hill
about a mile from Martley. The late addition of an extra lap caused a
last minute dash to the toilet and extra food in the back pocket for
many! I always carry a week’s supply of gels in my pocket in case I get
lost or Ewart my team mate gets the knock
This stage was dominated by Rob Whitfield in a lone breakaway
very early on. Rob is great at this kind of move as are some of his
teammates. Graham Payne, a new C rider did a great job of stifling
any attempts to bring his teammate back, always pouncing on any
attempts. Robin Haigh 2nd in TT and riding his first race of the season
and Andy Donaldson were particularly active and aggressive but got
little in the way of help.
My calculation was that Rob Whitfield was away for about 3 laps
keeping a 30 second advantage and then it came down rapidly. I did
not have my race head on but was purely trying to survive, but a
couple of counter attacks when Rob was caught resulted in about 6
or 7 riders going clear before the final run from Woodbury to Martley.
These were Ray Pugh, Ray Palin, Callum Gough, Graham Payne, and
Marcus Walker. I am sure I have missed somebody out but the bunch
sprint up the hill resulted in us catching some of the break. Callum
Gough took the win from Graham Payne and Marcus Walker. Main
casualty today was Kev Shand who got a pinch puncture on a pot
hole 1st lap and chased bravely on his own for the rest of the day.
1st Callum Gough, 2nd Graham Payne, 3rd Marcus Walker.
Stage 3 40 miles
2 laps of a circuit to Clows Top, Newnham Bridge to pass through
Abberley twice before continuing to finish just short of the top the
hill at Clows top.
On the 1st time after the summit of Clows top and left toward
Newnham on a very fast descent I thought I was seeing things when
my club mate Ewart Howkins (2 years riding the bike after 30 years
with no riding and probably 3 stone heavier than the average rider)
shot down the outside of the bunch at an incredible rate, appearing to
be sat bolt upright! It was amazing to see several riders heads turn to
the right in unison as he went by and revved out of sight. .He told me
later that he wished he had got bigger than a 50 tooth big ring on!
This was the spark which ignited breakaway specialist Phil Rose
who took off the with Gary Hill for company working very well ( to
just get a start on the hills). These 2 caught Ewart before the vicious ,
long prime hill where very generous time bonuses were on offer for
the 1st 3.riders over. Phil and Gary shared the bonuses as they stayed
away right into Abberley last time and on to the climb to the finish
on Clows Top. Poor Ewart slid backwards with others 1st time up the
main climb, eventually got back on to go backwards again on 2nd
lap. Les Liddiard managed to join the 2 leaders into the 2nd lap
Graham Payne and Rob Whitfield did a great team effort as ever and
were the perfect team mates trying to defend Phil Rose’s lead.
Unfortunately justice was not done, they were caught. In the last
mile or 2 a couple of attempts were made to get away for the win
but being uphill and a bit of wind I do not think anyone was very
confident of holding out off the front.
At the start Marcus Walker had told me he sometimes trains on
the finish hill and I watched when Marcus moved someway towards
the front and on the outside.. The finish came in sight, I did not see
a yellow flag so when Marcus committed to fight for the finish that
was my cue to go and hope he had not set me off too soon. The finish
could not come soon enough and I crossed the line in oxygen debt
with Graham Payne 2nd for the second time and Callum Gough I
think third.
I may have won but this was completely undeserved. But then the
last 300 yards of a race is the only bit I like so because I was there I
had to at least have a go!
Very cruel luck on Nick Giles who on his good form would have
fought out the overall but had the bad luck to puncture just after
the race started... He chased all race and did not finish far behind.
Class ride!
1st Alan Kemp, 2nd Graham Payne, 3rd Callum Gough.
Stage 4 55 miles. Circuit based on 6 times up the hill at Berrow
Green Hill.
Interesting one this as Andy Donaldson led overall with about 14
riders easily within striking distance within about 20 seconds. Andy’s
problem was how to control everybody especially as on 5 climbs up
Berrow Green hill there were time bonuses of 5, 4,3,2 seconds, double
time at the finish. The bonuses registered in my head but were just
academic as I just wanted to get the race over.
Before the end of 1st lap Rob Whitfield punctured and chased
hard all race and Nick Giles had a lead for the time bonuses taking
5 second in front of the chasing bunch. My initial thought was that
if anyone gives it everything each lap for the bonuses then they will
suffer going for the finish
1st counting climb I went from the bunch for the bonus time. As
we went over the deceptive climb which starts steep but almost
levels out, Steve Jolly shouted “ keep going” A sharp left down a
narrow descent and the break had formed. We worked well together
and we caught Nick Giles. The break was Nick Giles, Callum Gough,
Steve Jolly, Graham Payne Andy Donaldson and I.
Good move to get in this break as 3 of the lads in the break had
teammates who would hopefully control things in the bunch. For
the 1st time I went into race mode as I had reduced the time gap
on Andy.. 44 miles to go. Maximum lead for the break was over 2
minutes .
Each sprint for time bonuses was vicious. Could not see who
gained bonuses behind me but I knew for certain that Graham Payne,
Andy and Callum were also picking up the spoils. Not sure in which
order.
Last time up to the finish I think all riders in the break new the
importance of this final dash for the line with double time bonus’s on
offer. We knew it was going to be incredibly close for the overall win.
I led out, wound it up and luckily held on.
Stage 4 1st Alan Kemp, 2nd Graham Payne ( for third time), 3rd Andy
Donaldson, 4th Callum Gough, 5th Steve Jolly, 6th Nick Giles ( who
after his bad luck moved into midfield position in the overall.
I know that John French did a storming finish to get away from a
chasing group as did Phil Rose and Ray Pugh.
Great weekend organized by Stuart Hall and his helpers with
sponsorship from Martin Bush Healthcare and Epic Cycles.
then they pulled away again near the finish. Terry Devine was third. It
Another Tale from a Registrar
By Mike Cross, Region 9
I wrote an article for The Veteran
Leaguer on the trials and tribulations
of a newly appointed Region Registrar
during 2009 and have to report that
they are still there! However, I have now
been appointed National Registrar in
addition to my regional responsibilities
and thought that it may be of interest
to report on some of that position’s own
features. I will also revisit some of the
problems I wrote about in my earlier
epistle.
On-line Membership Numbers.
It is now six months since the
introduction of the on-line membership
application system was launched and
so time to review the successes and
failures of the system in the light of
experiences and comments received in
that time.
The take up of the on-line method
has surpassed the expectations of the
sponsors and seems to have caught the
imagination of the membership. At the
time of writing, the total membership,
on- and off-line, stands at 1737, with
742 of them being on-line, just under
43 percent. Unfortunately at this time,
the system is not available to members
in Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 so if we discount
these members from the calculation,
the total membership in those Regions
that do offer on-line membership is
1289 of which 738 of them are online,
just over 57 percent. The number
of on-line members in these regions
would be even greater except that the
on-line system at the moment requires
a payment to be made and so free
members (region officials and event
organizers in 2010) and those who
joined after 31 August 2009 but before
the start of the system in December must
be recorded as off-line. The difference
of 4 members on-line is because a very
small minority managed to overcome
the built-in on-line embargo of Regions
1 through 4 by supplying an incorrect
postcode and thus getting the system
to issue a licence for a different region.
Luckily, diligence on the part of Region
Registrars manages to catch these
vagrants and ensure that they are
transferred to the correct region.
then accept the multitude of different
debit and credit cards that are available.
That has now been corrected and is
no longer an issue. The other most
frequent bar to successful application
is that caused by non-receipt of the
e-mail from the system that provides a
system-generated password that allows
the applicant to get into the payment
module. We are still not sure what is
going on here in all cases, but as several
hundred members have successfully
avoided these problems, we are sure
that the system is basically sound and
that the root of the problems may be
at the input stage. Some applicants
delayed using the password and then
lost it; some intentionally delayed using
it for one reason or another. As the
system logs people on irrespective of
whether they complete the process,
the logs were getting clogged up
with un-completed applications and
the reason for the system, getting
an early and accurate handle on the
size of the paid-up members, being
frustrated. Accordingly, we introduced
a cut-off procedure whereby any uncomplete
application more than seven
days old was issued with a reminder
and then deleted if still un-complete
after a further seven days. The data
from these applications is not lost but
can be reinstated on the log by using
the password and going back to the
payment module. Over the past few
weeks, only two to three per week are
being deleted for this reason.
An On-line Input Error.
Irrespective of the guidance given
to on-line applicants on the website
pages, many of them did not follow
the rules for providing their postcode
data. The system allocates an applicant
to a region based upon the first part
of the postcode that mirrors that used
by postal applicants when deciding
which Region Registrar to send their
application to. So if you live in west
London, you should enter W. If you
live in Watford, you enter WD and
get allocated to Region 7; if you only
enter W you get allocated to Region 9.
Sorting this out later is a real pain with
the accounting records having to be
changed so that the £2.50 from every
on-line application that goes to the
Region goes to the correct one. This
problem is happily now receding.
Another Other On-line Input Error.
One of the friendly features of the
system is that once on-line and postal
members are registered, the logs can
be used to directly print-off members’
names and addresses for either labels
or the envelopes for sending off the
licences, Handbooks and VLs (to those
who want it by post). However, several
on-line members did not input their
address in the same way as if they were
writing a normal envelope but did it
by an inconsistent mix of upper and
lower case letters. On-line members get
a welcome e-mail that repeats their
personal data back to them and they
can see how it looks when printed and
could then make the corrections. We
Registrars should not be expected to
correct these matters before printing
off the labels or envelopes, nor should
we be expected to correct the nonstandard
postcodes such as Wawa126bs
(disguised to protect the guilty party), as
one example recently. What the optical
character reader in the sorting office
makes of this I hesitate to guess, and we
have had some examples of envelopes
going astray and licences etc. having to
be re-issued, at an irrecoverable cost to
the region.
Fixing a Time Bomb from the Past.
One group of members more directly
affected by the system is those of Region
1 Scottish residency. Previously, they had
been issued with 11 prefixed numbers
instead of 01 in Region 1 that worked
very well and enabled the separation of
Scotland residents for statistical analysis
purposes. (So why are Wales residents
not separated from England residents?)
Region 1 is not yet part of the on-line
system which means that in common
with Regions 2, 3 and 4, their monthly
records of memberships have to be sent
to another registrar who has access to
the system for recording the data. The
system does not recognise a region
11 and so they were being missed in
the counting procedure nationally. This
has been remedied by allocation of a
specific block of numbers within 01 for
Scotland which will be safe to use for a
few years yet until we get another 2000
Early On-line System Problems.
Early problems arose from the on-line
payment system because it did not
members on the books.
Page 16 The Veteran Leaguer: Summer 2010

Coping with non-On-line regions.
This procedure of having to transfer
the monthly records from Regions 1
through 4 also means that the current
sum of the current membership is not
as accurate as it could be because these
records are updated monthly whereas
the records of on-line members are
updated daily as they join and off-line
members in Regions 5 through 10 are
generally accurate within a few days
or so, depending upon the frequency
of these region’s Registrars dealing
with the applications. It is hoped that
Regions 1 through 4 will soon join the
on-line team and help us improve the
accuracy and immediacy of the records.
And the next Time Bomb?
The excitement to come is when in
September 2010 we open the on-line
system to renewals for 2011. All current
2010 members, on-line and postal, are
new members as far as the system is
concerned and we hope renewal based
on already stored data will be seamless.
There may be a few glitches lurking in
there but with your co-operation and
patience we’ll solve them.
That is enough about the problems
of the on-line system, we are gradually
solving them. Now for some recurring
moans about the off-line (postal)
procedure, from a Region 9 perspective.
the licence. You may think that it is
not a big task but when there are tens
and twenties of them it gets to be a
bit tedious. Come on guys, give me a
break and read the requirements before
sending in your postal applications.
Handwriting (again!)
The standard of handwriting overall
on applications forms hasn’t really
improved and it is a real pain trying to
decode the addresses (bad) and e-mail
addresses (worse) of some of them.
The worse culprits are those who join
at a race. If I can’t understand the e-
mail address after 30seconds, I ignore
it and don’t attempt to record it. These
members will then miss out on the e-
mail messages I send out from time to
time to the mass of region members.
Keeping us up-to-date.
A comparison of addresses and e-mail
addresses for 2010 members, both
on-line and postal, and those for 2009
shows once again that most members
who move house (a few) or change
e-mail provider ( a bigger few) don’t
bother to let us know about it, with the
obvious risk of VLs and e-mails going
astray. On-line members can alter their
on-line records when one or both of
these changes happen, but that doesn’t
get them changed on my e-mail address
book.
the flaw in the envelope size debate.
Even a C5 stamped addressed envelope
accompanying a postal membership
application is TOO SMALL for a copy of
the VL and does not carry the correct
amount of postage. In these cases I am
stuck with the need to tape the supplied
envelope onto a large envelope and
add stamps to it to make up the 81p.
An added bonus for members joining
between VL issue dates is that if there
are copies of previous issues still in
stock, they may find that they get more
than one issue with their licence, as long
as stocks last, and all within the 81p
second class postage cost!
Licence Photographs.
I went to a race a few weeks ago and
after the finish, gave the organizer
a hand by laying out the licences
number-side-up so that racers could
recognize theirs when handing back
their body numbers. Some of the racers
said they couldn’t read them so asked
for them to be turned over so that
they are photo-side-up and they could
recognize themselves. Hah! A large
proportion didn’t have photos attached,
that should not be a surprise.
Washing Machines.
And what is it about washing machines
and LVRC licences not getting on
together? There is a small but steady
Handbooks and Envelopes (again!) Veteran Leaguer Distribution.
stream of requests for replacement
We had previously decided and Region 9 has implemented a new VL licences that were still in race clothing
publicised that we would not be issuing distribution procedure for 2010 that pockets when loaded into the washing
supposed to overcome the problem of postal cost structure to be able to follow before washing. However, as this seems
Joe Parkin's Come and Gone
Chronicles the Rebirth of Pro Bike
Racing in America
Parkin's New Book Is the Sequel to
His Highly Praised Memoir, A Dog in
a Hat
Boulder, CO, USA - May 12, 2010
- After a grueling five-year education
in European bike racing (A Dog in a
Hat), Joe Parkin describes his return
from Belgium, his struggles with the
nascent American bike racing scene,
and the birth of mountain bike racing.
Parkin's new book Come and Gone
is the sequel to his widely praised
memoir A Dog in a Hat. Come and
Gone is now available in the U.K. at all
good bookshops and through Cordee.
co.uk.
After five years of racing in Belgium,
Joe Parkin said goodbye to Flanders
knowing he might never go back. He
never did. Parkin flew back to the U.S.
with empty pockets and no contract.
For several years, he was unable to
watch a Belgian spring classic without
tears in his eyes, and seeing his former
teammates race the 1992 Tour de
France was torture.
Eventually Joe landed a spot with
the elite Coors Light cycling team.
After the years in Europe, though,
racing in the U.S. was a difficult
transition, with poorly organised
events, little sponsorship money, and
inexperienced racers. Joe was unable
to muster the motivation that had
driven him every day in Europe. Until
he started racing mountain bikes.
Come and Gone follows Joe through
three hardscrabble seasons chasing
wins on the U.S. road racing circuit
before he changes course and tastes
victory as a mountain bike pro. A
gritty, authentic, and heartfelt personal
memoir, Come and Gone is also a
chronicle of the rebirth of professional
bike racing in America.
Tom Simpson Re-visited (almost a book review)
If Tom was alive today he would be
a G Category rider, however, after a
life in the peloton I doubt he would
have joined the LVRC; indeed, he
would probably live in Monte Carlo,
managing his hotel chain and making
occasional celebrity appearances (for
a large fee).
He was my hero when I was young
and when he died I was shattered.
Death had not intruded on my young
life at that point, and for Tom to be
snatched away in such a dramatic way
in the world's greatest race was very
difficult to accept. Like many others I
contributed to his memorial stone on
Ventoux and have yet to visit it to pay
my respects. (I hope I can still claw my
way up to it, it will be a steady climb!!!)
I saw him in action a couple of times
in 1964, once at Herne Hill, where,
in addition to his riding, I remember
him sitting in the track centre with
the other continental pros, including
Jacques Anquetil, and when some
pigeons landed nearby it was Tom
who made a great fuss about chasing
them away and delighting the crowd
with his antics. The other occasion
was the Crystal Palace crit when Shay
Elliott and Alan Ramsbottom also
rode and they trounced all the British
pros except Billy Holmes (the only
home-based pro not to be lapped).
As you may surmise I was a South
London boy and rode at the time with
the South Eastern Road Club (Bill Pink,
Lou Smith and Mike Twitchett et al).
The purpose of this item is to urge
you to read and watch Tom's story in
the books and the DVD's, there are
three books and a couple of DVD's,
however, you do have to read them
in the right order. Firstly, read Tom's
own book "Cycling is my Life" recently
reprinted in paperback. This is his own
account of growing up and developing
into a world class pro, and is a
good read
Next Chris Sidwell's offering, "Mr
Tom" takes the story further, Chris is
after all Tom's nephew, but it is a bit
biased and protective, however still
illuminating and another view of his
career.
The third book to read is William
Fotheringham's "Put me back on my
bike. In search of Tom Simpson" which
delves into detail and puts Tom's life
into perspective, warts and all. British
Champion, record breaker, personality,
Classics winner, World Champion, the
first BBC Sports Personality of the Year,
main feature of the first Eurosport
Cycling TV broadcast (Paris- Roubaix
1960) when a late attack nearly paid
off, highly intelligent, a deep thinker
about every aspect of life and his
sport. I believe that, had he lived, road
racing would have been influenced
into a different and better path than
has been the case. Tom was a man
who was not scared to speak his mind
and he had the personality to ensure
that people listened to what he had
to say.
I know that some write him off as
a drug user, but he was part of the,
then accepted, scene and had such
an ambition to succeed that he was
prepared to do whatever it took to
achieve his goals, notably, to win the
Tour de France. I am sure that it was
his iron will, the ability to ride himself
into near oblivion on so many occasions,
plus the combination of factors
which prevailed on that fateful day
that sealed his fate.
I commend these books to you if
you haven't read them, re-read them
if you studied them years ago.
The DVD is called "The World of
Tommy Simpson" and I hope Ray Pascoe's
1997 video "Something to Aim
At” is now in DVD format.
Majorca Bikes Rule!
By Sam Bills - GS Strada/Afford Rent A Car
Last September a few of us local
lads from Stoke On Trent decided we
would like to get a weeks training
in the spring away from the British
weather, we had been to the Spanish
mainland a couple of times and
thoroughly enjoyed it, but now felt it
was perhaps time to come out of the
comfort zone and try somewhere
else.
We had heard loads of people
talking about Majorca and we
decided that if so many go back
year after year to the island, it must
have something special.
I had not been to Majorca on the
bike since the early 90’s in the days
of the Ideal Travel Camps based in
Arenal, so we thought it best to do
a bit of research, and at this point I
need to give thanks to Craig from
Lancs Road Club who sent me loads
of info and contacts about good
hotels, rides etc
We booked the flights,
accommodation and transfers
ourselves via the internet.
We arrived on the island fully laden
with luggage and bike bags, to be
met by a friendly face who was to
take us to Puerto Pollensa and fill us
in on how quiet Pollensa was at this
time of year! Never mind we were
there for the training!
We arrived at our chosen hotel, The
3 Star Pollensa Park just off the sea
front prom, a very nice base I have
to say, with just enough time to have
an evening meal and then to get the
bikes built up for the next day.
Well the first day dawned with
bright sunshine, and looking around
the dining hall over a leisurely
breakfast it became apparent
virtually everyone staying in the
hotel was there for the cycling, and
that many had been coming to the
hotel for years.
With breakfast downed and
discussion over the map complete, it
was kit on, (shorts and short sleeves)
Suncream on, down to “Rosa’s”
supermarket for some water for the
bottles and get the bikes from the
locked storage rooms.
There was a clubrun type buzz
outside the hotel as the banter was
flying round, and people headed off
on their way for their chosen route
for the day.
We headed off down to the front
just the 4 of us and followed the
coastline towards Alcudia, with the
mountain range to the right and the
sea to our left, smug grins appeared
on our faces as we realised we had a
whole week of this to savour.
Bikes were everywhere we were
passing big groups, with cars and
trucks giving us priority on the
roundabouts, a real shock from
what we are used to in the UK, we
soon realised that bikes rule here in
March/April!!
Puerto Pollensa is a perfect base
for a training camp with virtually
all the island reachable albeit some
rides would be longish all dayers,
you have the flattish/ rolling inland
areas with a vast network of country
lanes and right on the doorstep is
the Tramontana mountain range
spreading from N east to N west,
with some top climbs and scenery
to die for, the ride across the North
coast from Valledemosa through
Soller, Lluc and over to Pollensa is
breathtaking, both in scenery and
terrain, and the climb from Bunyola
over Orient is a cracker.
We managed to get 6 good rides
in and clocked up 503 miles, most of
them done as a quartet except for
the last day when we tagged onto
Stuart Halls group of 20 odd for a
ride to Petra for lunch stop, we had
been through Petra earlier in the
week and just thought it was one of
those villages that you never seem
to see anyone in, however Stuart’s
local knowledge took us into the
central square with café’s round
the perimeter and more bikes leant
against walls and riders chillaxing
than you can imagine, a real mecca.
Night times mainly consisted of an
evening meal, which was excellent
every night followed by a stroll
either across the road to the bar to
watch football and a couple of San
Miguel’s or a wander down to Tolo’s
(a keen cyclist himself ) bar to relax
with a large “vase” of beer and mull
over the days exploits.
All in all we all agreed it was
probably the best weeks cycling we
had ever had, If I could give a couple
of tips to someone going for the first
time and not in an organised training
camp or group, The first would be to
get a good map with all the small
roads on it, it saved our bacon a
few times, and the second would be
don’t bother to acknowledge the
German cyclists because you won’t
get one back!!
A Tough Baptism
into LVRC racing
Les Dalley
I have cycled for quite a few years now,
mainly off road but with a bit of road
here and there. At the beginning of
this year I decided to get a new road
bike and join the LVRC to do some
racing. I then sent off my money for 4
races during the season. My first race
entered was the Sevale race at Leigh
Sinton. As I am 45, I signed up for the B
group and really had no idea what to
expect in terms of pace and intensity.
Having done quite a bit of training
through the winter and leading up
to the race, I felt mildly confident and
excited at doing well and certainly
hoped to stay with the bunch for most
of the race. However, it was not to
be! With only half a lap done, I got
dropped. I then had to deal with my
despondency and disappointment
and carry on. This I did and eventually
got caught by the C's. I stayed with
them for a lap and then slipped off
the back of that group too! That left
me to do the last lap on my own.
However, this was aided by a guy
from Worcester St Johns in a similar
position and we rode around together
Ex-Pros Needed!
to the finish. On reflection after the
race, I asked myself what on earth had
I done. My experience had knocked
my confidence and I had 3 more races
to do! I then skipped my next race
at Gt Witley. Which left me with the
Sevale Handicap Champs on the 23
May. Once I had worked out the way
in which the race would be run and
figured that every group would be
chasing from the gun, I new I was in for
a tough time. Well a tough one it was
too! Again I was in the B group, which
unfortunately had the combination of
being one of the smallest groups and
also had some very strong riders in
it too. (who went on to catch the C's
and D's later) We went off from the
gun at a very high pace indeed. I tried
to take my turn on the front as much
as possible, but as it was such a small
group, there was no time to recover
what so ever. Then disaster struck
about 5 miles from the start, I hit a
pothole (which frustratingly was not
pointed out by the rider in front of me
that I was following) and punctured!
I fitted a tube and blew it up, but the
A group had already passed before I
could get riding again. So once again I
faced riding on my own and this I did. I
then figured that if I carried on around
the lap to the start and HQ, I could ask
permission to rejoin the race on the
last lap to give myself at least a 15 mile
work out without counting on the
overall positions. This I was allowed to
do, I grabbed another tube and then
rejoined the the race and got in the
now formed, B, C and D's group. I then
worked on the front of this group for
as much as I could and really enjoyed
the experience. I was determined to
get a good work out from it and that
was exactly what I did. I new that
I could not influence the race final
positions as the next group were too
far ahead to catch before the end, so
I just buried myself. I was careful not
to get involved with the final sprint of
that group and just peeled off before
the finish. Despite my bad luck and
frustration, I came away quite positive
in my ability and enjoyed the last lap
very much.!
The organisers of Britain’s original floodlit cycle race are looking for ex-professional cyclists.
The Newport Nocturne which takes place in Newport Shropshire on September 4th,
features a "Past Masters" race, open to anyone who has held a Pro licence. The race, which
is run every couple of years, has previously featured Sean Kelly, Sid Barras and Les West,
amongst many others familiar to LVRC members. Previous editions attracted up to
15,000 spectators.
Promoter, Nick Jeggo explained "We always put on the Past Masters event just before the
main Pro/Elite race. It seems to attract a different
sort of cycling fan, people who have followed the sport for years and who want
another chance to see the top riders from their era perform again.".
"The Nocturne is only a few weeks away, so we’d like any ex-Pros to get in touch
with us as soon as possible. It would also be great if some of them got sponsors
for the night and gave the proceeds to the Dave Rayner Fund." said Nick
There is no entry fee and the entire prize list for the race is donated to the Dave
Rayner Fund,.
Nick can be contacted at info@bikerace.co.uk and on 01952 810964 (10am
– 7pm) or 07967 452688 (any time)
Point of view by Tom McCall
I go down to Southern Provence in the
South of France in March to finish off
my training. My wife comes with me for
an early holiday + she looks after me
while I am there - it’s an arrangement
that works quite well, and it’s not too
one-sided - I promise!
I drive down via the Channel Tunnel,
and these days, we have an overnight
stop on the way down to split the
journey. It also gives us the opportunity
to explore the countryside a little, as we
have more time. This year, we chose the
Eastern Motorway route, and, we had
a pleasant overnight stop in Nuits St
Georges.
The plan was to try to get up to Alpe
d’Huez. My wife had never been there,
and I thought it would be fascinating
to see it as a snow scene. The access
road was clear, and we managed to get
there. It was as rewarding as I thought
it would be, but incredibly crowded (I
had no idea how popular skiing is). At
the roundabout at the start of the climb,
we were pleasantly surprised to see
that the Lauteret was advised as “Open”,
which meant that we did not need to
back-track to Grenoble to continue our
way South. The Lauteret had in fact only
been cleared and opened the day before.
There were spectacular snow scenes
as we went over the summit, and the
turning to the Galibier was completely
obscured by deep snow - you would
not have known that there was a road
there at all. With all this splendour, little
did we know what was in store for us in
Provence over the coming days!
I could see from the Weather Forecast
that there was a cold spell in the South,
but I was not overly concerned, as I
had all my Winter gear with me as a
precaution. Off I went on my first ride
on the Sunday under dark skies. After
about an hour, it started to snow, and,
during the next hour, it developed into
a full-blown blizzard! I couldn’t quite
believe it, and I took the shortest route
back to where we were staying. I arrived
back safely, but I thought this was
rough justice having ridden through an
extended cold spell in the UK. I could
have stayed at home for nothing instead
of paying to have my bo---cks frozen off
in France! Although we were snowed
in for one day, it soon went away. The
French are very resourceful, as, although
they are not used to this, the roads were
cleared very quickly. Although the snow
stayed around on the ground for several
days, I was able to ride on cleared roads
in a fascinating winter-type environment
- just like at home, and not often seen in
the Region - see attached pic.
Things improved rapidly after that,
and, when we went to a stage start of
Paris-Nice on the first Friday, it was 10
degrees. During the second week it rose
gradually to 18, which was just the ticket
- out in shorts, and feeling the heat of
the sun.
Most of you are aware that I live South
of London in the Croydon area. Further
South than Croydon on the A23 Brighton
Road is Coulsdon, and one thing I have
been meaning to comment on for some
time is the Coulsdon Bypass - built a few
years ago to relieve the congestion that
used to build up in Coulsdon centre
during rush hours. It is about half a
mile long, with a traffic light junction
at the Northern end, and a roundabout
at the Southern end, with access to
Coulsdon centre from either end. All
very sensible, you may say, but it must
have been designed by a committee
of engineers of opposing views, where
all their ideas were incorporated to
keep all their egos happy! It is of single
carriageway construction. In a Southerly
direction, there is a border at the side
of the road - not designated as a cycle
lane, or wide enough, but advised to
be used as such, keeping away from
the gutter, as it collects all the sundry
road debris. Although the speed limit is
30mph going into 40, most motorised
traffic treats it as a drag-strip. There is
an additional hazard going South, as
there is a slip road off to the left, where
you will invariably get passed by traffic
turning off - either in front - or behind,
if they cannot possibly still find any
road space left to pass in front without
running out of road - I am sure we all
understand this situation! In a Northerly
direction, the layout is quite different.
Soon after leaving the roundabout, a
red-coloured additional nearside lane
appears. If you have a good look at the
sign (see attached pic), it will advise that
this lane is reserved for Cyclists, Buses,
Taxis - nothing unusual here, but wait
for it - it is also available to Motorbikes
and HGV’s over 3.5 tonnes. Unbelievable,
but true! On the face of it, it looks like a
recipe for disaster, but, strangely, I have
rarely had any incidents on this stretch.
This special lane is very wide, and if
overtaken by an HGV, there is usually
plenty of room. Also, many HGV’s seem to
keep to the outer lane, even joining the
queues that build up. The reason for this
is that the words “Bus Lane” are painted
on the road, so, unless an HGV driver
knows the road, or reads the sign, it has
the effect of keeping them out of that
lane. The other strange element is the
face that, to my knowledge, the bypass
does not feature on any local bus routes,
as they are all routed through Coulsdon
centre. There are coaches that use the
bypass, but I have never seen a local
bus on it. Mind you, these planners are
cop-out merchants, as they have bailed
themselves out by providing a wide
walkway alongside the Northbound
side, which is signed as available to
Pedestrians and Cyclists. It might just
be OK to contemplate using it on your
bike, apart from the fact that you would
have to virtually become a pedestrian
to cross the in-coming slip road. It is
easier to stay on the carriageway, as
not much traffic enters there. As I said, I
have not had too much trouble on the
bypass, and it is quicker to use it than
the old route through Coulsdon centre
due to pedestrianisation and multiple
traffic lights. However, I must take my
hat off to the team that designed this
eccentric masterpiece - you must all feel
very proud of yourselves! I would be
interested to hear of any other eccentric
road layouts that involve cyclists.
