Announcements, additions and amendments Objective of the LVRC The provision of a programme of competitive and social cycling events for male and female members of 40 years of age and over To all contributors We welcome all contributions from anyone - letter, comments, results, articles, reports, pictures, anything as long as it’s not just personal abuse - we can all get plenty of that at home. Our favourite way of getting material is by e-mail, but we’d much rather have it handwritten than not at all. If you can type it or supply it on disk we’re even happier. Word, .rtf, or ASCII are all fine. If supplying pictures, please leave them separate from the document(s). Preferably, photos should be in jpeg format. Deadline for next issue: 15th December 2011 LVRC Website There will be a demand for the Veteran Leaguer for a long time yet, and even when people are on the internet they still like to have hard copy. But the VL is a quarterly, whereas the website can be updated instantly with current news, results, changes of date. Whatever you’ve got, webmaster Jim Golden wants it. It covers members for both social and competitive cycling at all times in UK and all European countries except Switzerland. Limit of Indemnity: five million pounds. All free with LVRC membership! However, as the name implies, this insurance is public liability only. If you want personal cover, you’ll have to arrange your own. Memberships and Entry Fee Changes From 2012 LVRC Membership fees are £20. Race Entry fees are £10. Bienvenue! A warm and sunny welcome awaits you. Lewis, Mandy & family have opened to everyone their 18th century Provencal Maison in the medieval village of La Colle sur Loup, situated fifteen kilometres from the airport of Nice on the Cote d’ Azur, South of France. Our aim is to offer a training facility for the competitive cyclist. The superb terrain and climate allows you to prepare for the seasons events and sportifs such as the Etape. This area is very popular with the European Pro Teams, Astana, AG2r and Cofidis to name but a few are here getting in those all important base miles in ideal weather conditions. For those that want to combine training and leisure, the Paris-Nice and Milan-San Remo are two classics not to be missed, right on our doorstep! Announcements, additions and amendments Fifteen years of LVRC track training at Manchester Velodrome Fancy riding on the fastest track in the world? Would you like the chance to ride behind a derny motorbike? If so, Region 4 is pleased to announce that for the fifteenth consecutive year there will be LVRC track training at Manchester this winter. These sessions are suitable for all levels of ability, including complete novices. The dates and times are as follows: Sunday 6th November 2011 3pm to 5pm Sunday 11th December 2011 3pm to 5pm We hope to be able to announce further dates for January, February and March. Please enter on a standard LVRC entry form, enclosing £10 per session. One form may be used for multiple dates. Please make cheques payable to "D Watson". Please don't forget to enclose a stamped addressed envelope. Hire bikes are available. If you need one, simply specify the size required on your entry form and pay for it on arrival at the track. Date and venue to be confirmed in early 2012. Region News Region 9 Another year virtually done and dusted. Now is the time to rest in the warm glow of our winter fires and reflect on the season’s successes and failures and to start to formulate our New Year resolutions to forgive our adversaries that may have been made during the heat of the summer. What’s he talking about? - It wasn’t hot at all. The penultimate event at Hogg Hill saw a very good turnout but only a derisory but faithful 21 staying on for the annual AGM. We crammed into a very hot room to learn from Mike Cross that the region had now reached 563 members (up 40 on the 2010) which is not only the largest in the country but also comprises 26 per cent of the national membership. Amongst the attendees it was very good to see Tony Woodcock, on a bike, but still with a broken collarbone - soon to the plated. That boy has suffered from some major mishaps in recent years including taking a header over a chair he was carrying down a flight of stairs. Don't try this at home as he did. Six apologies for absence were received. One from that gentlemen's gentleman Ginno Goddard. Bill Ollis reported on the progress of the Gravesend Velo Park . Sounds an extremely serious addition to the cycling world to be officially opened in April 2012. Fred Little reported that Region 9 had held 51 events in 2011 with 12 on the road and 39 on closed circuits. The three series held at Hogg Hill were extremely successful with an average of 50 in each race. This total number of events is slightly down from last year as Bill Butterworth is still having an affair with the beautiful and youthful BC. Real concern was raised from the floor on the relentless rise in costs of LVRC racing. Increases in membership and entry fees are to blame. Pete Wilson replied that the national insurance premiums had increased dramatically and at the Region is about to embark on a policy of providing expenses for officials and marshals all of which will not ease the trend. Pete also reported the region’s kitty stood at 2.5 K. It was noted that a large number of cruise brochures were seen mingled in with his papers. The Region now supports full sets of flags and will shortly be self-sufficient in road race signs. The great and generous Trevor Madden, purveyor of pedals to Mark Cavendish, has donated a large, excellent and noisy bell to announce the last laps. No excuses now for not hearing that welcome noise. Consideration is being given to the purchase of a gazebo for officials to use at Dunton and Hogg Hill. We all hope this expense does not impinge too much on Pete’s cruises. Trevor is planning, throughout the winter at Hogg Hill, on the first Sunday of every month a race and bike jumble. A chance perhaps to pick up some of Cav’s old pedals. New promoters will be required for next season with the advent of the Gravesend circuit. It matters not whether they are Kent or Kentish clubs. The Dulwich Paragon have mooted their interest in running the Region's Percy Stannard Series event. There is much to look forward to in next season's Schedule. With the undoubted increased costs of travel there does appear to be at decrease in the cross-fertilisation of riders from different areas even within our own region - east sees very little of the West and vice-versa. In a small attempt to rectify this situation it has been suggested by some very wise men that an Inter circuit competition be held next year with the cream of Hillingdon, Hogg Hill and the MK Bowl fighting it out for the title of ‘The Very Bestest Circuit in the Whole Wide World’. Gravesend could even be included if they get their act up and running as MK must their tea urn.
