Editorial
So here we are again at the time of year when the mudguards,
training bike and thermal clothing comes back out again. The
time of year when you can reflect of all your efforts in your
racing kit. For many it will be a time to hang up the wheels for
a few months ready for the January onslaught of training.
Whatever your standpoint give yourself a big pat on the back
and we will see you all again next season.
I hope you enjoy this edition as I feel
it contains a good balance of results,
book reviews, coaching articles and
general articles.
Please feel free to send me any articles
that you would like to see published.
I would also like any good quality
racing action photographs in a
300dpi format if you can manage it.
You may even find your image on
the front cover.
I trust you will all have a safe winter,
dodging the pot holes, icy roads, the
icy cold winds and driving rain. All the
conditions that make you bike riders
and racers.
See you up the road.
From the Chair
Don Parry
The Executive team are currently having
to deal with situations that I do not think
anybody has previously anticipated and
certainly not planned for.
We have received from a racing member,
for the first time in my knowledge, a
written complaint about the standards
of the organisation of a race with serious
rider safety implications.
We have had at least three separate
complaints from Parish Councils in areas
where we race referring to individual
rider and spectator behaviour, the
behaviour of the peloton and in their
view general inconsiderate use of the
road including abuse of the highway
code.
Furthermore we also have had
notification of five potential insurance
claims, including one rider to rider
claim, which if pursed to completion will
somehow or other end up costing us
money. This will happen either by way
of us paying excesses or by us choosing
to settle the claims out of our own
funds to avoid unnecessary increase in
premiums, or by us utilising the benefits
of our insurance policy which will in turn
Contents
inevitably lead to increased premiums.
It is inappropriate to discuss the
details of these situations in this forum
but I wish to inform the membership of
a number of important points.
Firstly your Executive team, the relevant
race organisers and their support teams
are dealing with the complaints from
the Parish Councils in a robust, balanced
and very professional manner including
refuting accusations that we consider
to be unjustified. However we must also
concede that we are far from guiltless
sometimes and where appropriate have
apologised and in one case agreed to
not use a particular circuit again for
some time. There is also a danger we
are being tarred with the same brush as
other organisations and we have taken
that into account in our responses.
Secondly with regard to the rider
complaint I believe we have taken
appropriate and proportionate action
with the intention that there should be
little or no grounds for similar comments
in future.
Thirdly the Executive team are
taking a keen focus on race and rider
safety issues going forward. We will be
encouraging all oranisers and riders
to read, digest and apply the contents
of the Race Organisation and Safety
manual, available in hard copy or on the
web site, so that we are seen to be, and
are actually doing everything we can to
organise and enjoy safe and enjoyable
racing.
Fourthly I make a plea to all individual
members on behalf of the whole of
the LVRC to be cognisant at all times of
other road users, our impact on them
and the general good image of our
sport that is so hard to attain and so
easy to lose.
Finally I would like to reassure all
members that as a consequence of the
careful management of LVRC finances
over many past years we are well placed
to withstand the most likely worst case
implications of the potential insurance
claims referenced above, should they
arise.
The provision of a programme of competitive and social cycling events for male
and female members of 40 years of age and over
To all contributors
We welcome all contributions from anyone - letter, comments, results, articles,
reports, pictures, anything as long as it’s not just personal abuse - we can all
get plenty of that at home.
Our favourite way of getting material is by e-mail, but we’d much rather have
it handwritten than not at all. If you can type it or supply it on disk we’re even
happier. Word, .rtf, or ASCII are all fine.
If supplying pictures, please leave them separate from the document(s).
Preferably, photos should be in jpeg format.
Deadline for next issue: 15th December 2011
There will be a demand for the Veteran Leaguer for a long time yet, and even when
people are on the internet they still like to have hard copy. But the VL is a quarterly,
whereas the website can be updated instantly with current news, results, changes of
date. Whatever you’ve got, webmaster Jim Golden wants it. Contact him on 01782-
Date and venue to be confirmed in early 2012.
Region News
Region 9
Another year virtually done and dusted. Now is the time to rest in
the warm glow of our winter fires and reflect on the season’s successes
and failures and to start to formulate our New Year resolutions
to forgive our adversaries that may have been made during
the heat of the summer. What’s he talking about? - It wasn’t hot at
all. The penultimate event at Hogg Hill saw a very good turnout but
only a derisory but faithful 21 staying on for the annual AGM. We
crammed into a very hot room to learn from Mike Cross that the
region had now reached 563 members (up 40 on the 2010) which
is not only the largest in the country but also comprises 26 per
cent of the national membership. Amongst the attendees it was
very good to see Tony Woodcock, on a bike, but still with a broken
collarbone - soon to the plated. That boy has suffered from some
major mishaps in recent years including taking a header over a
chair he was carrying down a flight of stairs. Don't try this at home
as he did. Six apologies for absence were received. One from that
gentlemen's gentleman Ginno Goddard. Bill Ollis reported on the
progress of the Gravesend Velo Park . Sounds an extremely serious
addition to the cycling world to be officially opened in April 2012.
Fred Little reported that Region 9 had held 51 events in 2011 with
12 on the road and 39 on closed circuits. The three series held at
Hogg Hill were extremely successful with an average of 50 in each
race. This total number of events is slightly down from last year as
Bill Butterworth is still having an affair with the beautiful and youthful
BC. Real concern was raised from the floor on the relentless rise
in costs of LVRC racing. Increases in membership and entry fees are
to blame. Pete Wilson replied that the national insurance premiums
had increased dramatically and at the Region is about to embark
on a policy of providing expenses for officials and marshals all of
which will not ease the trend. Pete also reported the region’s kitty
stood at 2.5 K. It was noted that a large number of cruise brochures
were seen mingled in with his papers. The Region now supports
full sets of flags and will shortly be self-sufficient in road race signs.
The great and generous Trevor Madden, purveyor of pedals to Mark
Cavendish, has donated a large, excellent and noisy bell to announce
the last laps. No excuses now for not hearing that welcome
noise. Consideration is being given to the purchase of a gazebo for
officials to use at Dunton and Hogg Hill. We all hope this expense
does not impinge too much on Pete’s cruises. Trevor is planning,
throughout the winter at Hogg Hill, on the first Sunday of every
month a race and bike jumble. A chance perhaps to pick up some
of Cav’s old pedals. New promoters will be required for next season
with the advent of the Gravesend circuit. It matters not whether
they are Kent or Kentish clubs. The Dulwich Paragon have mooted
their interest in running the Region's Percy Stannard Series event.
There is much to look forward to in next season's Schedule. With
the undoubted increased costs of travel there does appear to be
at decrease in the cross-fertilisation of riders from different areas
even within our own region - east sees very little of the West and
vice-versa. In a small attempt to rectify this situation it has been
suggested by some very wise men that an Inter circuit competition
be held next year with the cream of Hillingdon, Hogg Hill and the
MK Bowl fighting it out for the title of ‘The Very Bestest Circuit in
the Whole Wide World’. Gravesend could even be included if they
get their act up and running as MK must their tea urn. The Region
9 Lunch is scheduled again for next year again at Stapleford Tawny
with details being released nearer the date in February.
The accounts showed a surplus of income over expenditure of £6.8k compared to the 2009 accounts.
Total income decreased by £2.6k, however, expenditure decreased by £9.7k.
Major factors were:
1) Membership income decreased by £1.1k due to the effect of free memberships.
2) Sundry income down by £1.7k due to no annual dinner.
3) 2009 included expenditure on the annual dinner of £5k. None in 2010.
4) One Veteran Leaguer was not published in 2010 saving approx £3.8k
ABC Criterium Championships Rhyl - to be confirmed.
The Handicap Championship is open to offers likewise the Time Trial Championships which were once again a great success Mick and
Barry will continue with the promotion if there are no other takers.
Mike Amery does not wish to continue as promoter of the Track Championships but he promised to give any new who comes forward
promoter all the help needed.
There are to be three Cyclo Cross events in November including the LVRC Championships.
PERCY STALLARD CO-ORDINATOR MICK IVES
Mick reported that this years “Stallards “ were well supported and is looking for new promoters for the 9 events around the UK. Mick
reported some frustration that not all organisers were following the guidelines requested. Mick said that following the successful
experience of hiring the BC timing and finish equipment for the Huntingdon event we should consider a similar arrangement for other
events in 2012. We are considering a simple lunch after the 2012 final event to present the overall winners and show some appreciation
to the sponsors.
MAGAZINE EDITOR ANDY BARRETT
Absent.
QUARTERMASTER PRO TEM WAYNE THOMAS
Wayne reported that the LVRC stock of Medals and Jerseys was depleted and needed renewing. He has been authorized to replenish
stocks at a total cost of about £3500.00
WEBMASTER JIM GOLDEN
Jim reported that the website was proving a great success but he could do with some more race reports and possibly pictures to go
with the results
PRESS SECRETARY MICK IVES
Mick reported that not everyone was sending him race reports and could they copy him with the results that they send to the website.
Mick expressed his great appreciation for the work that Don Parry put in on behalf of the LVRC a statement which the whole meeting
endorsed.
Election of officials
The committee all agreed to stand for re-election with the exception of Steve Watson who has emigrated. Wayne Thomas was proposed
in his place as there were no other nominations the committee was re-elected en bloc.
Proposals
1. By the executive committee that the annual membership be increased to £20.00 per annum to pay for the increased insurance
premiums Motion carried unanimously.
Page 6 The Veteran Leaguer: Autumn 2011

2. By the executive committee. That the rules of racing be changed to those proposals published in the VL Spring 2011 and on the
website at the same time. In fact these changes correct some anomalies and reflect today's conditions. Whilst the meeting agreed with
the proposition in general they passed the motion with the provisio that the executive committee reconsider Rule 13 regarding bunch
sizes.
3. By Region 9 that the race entry to be raised to £10.00 to counter the increased cost of driving expensed/changing rooms and first aid
provision . Motion For 14 against 8 abstained 6. Motion carried.
4. By Mike Amery that the question "how many events does your club promote every year" be removed from the entry form as it is
ambiguous. Motion carried executive committee to amend.
Motions 5 and 8 were ruled out of order as no one was present to speak on them.
7. Proposed Mike Allen, seconded Derrick Woodings. That provision be made in the rules for a proper disputes procedure to be followed
when necessary after races and to consider whether there should be additional rules to cater for the situation of multiple races on
a course at one time and faster races catching slower races. The meeting instructed the executive to sort this out at their next meeting.
Any other business
The Events Coordinator to find out the dates of the BC Masters Championships (if any) so there are no clashes with our championships.
The Meeting closed with a vote of appreciation to the executive for all the work they put in.
Next AGM meeting date to be confirmed but around same time as 2011.
Action Summary
1. Exec to reconsider rule 13 changes. 12/10/11. This is now done and for clarity Championship events should have a minimum bunch
size of 10. All other events covered by Rule / Recommendation 6 in the Organisation and Safety Manual where minimum bunch sizes are
recommended as 20. No further action required.
2. Delete from entry form "how many events does you club organise"
3. Exec to consider dispute procedure after races and the situation where a faster race catches a slower race on at the same time.
4. Events coordinator to consider and BC Championship dates when setting LVRC date.
Chairman’s Review
I think its always useful to occasionally remind ourselves why we exist and particularly so when reviewing how our the current year has
gone.
So --- the formal reason for our existence states ---
"The provision of a programme of competitive and social cycling events for male and female members of 40 years of age and over."
Overall I think we do pretty well.
Overall I believe we do pretty well against that objective and what you will hear at the agm will support that view I hope.
As in previous years I am pleased to report another successful years racing for our members with still more to come. At the start of the
year we had a race calendar of 140 races plus the Track Championships and the Cyclo Cross events . That is roughly the same as last year
and seems to be about right for the size of organisation we are. On behalf of all members and riders a big thank you to all organisers
and their helpers for this fantastic effort.
Road 50% -- Closed circuit 50%
Over the year we have lost a few of those races, one or two through lack of entries perhaps one or two due to police objection but most
depressing of all was one in Yorkshire.
Alistair Cameron's original police application was rejected, he then took them at his own expense and with some help from the region
through a process to Judicial review because he thought the police objection was illegal. He won his argument at Judicial Review but
then had to cancel the whole thing anyway because he could not get enough people to come out and help! How ironic and sad id
that.
In 2011 We also lost the Bill Butterworth mid week promotions for the LVRC at Hillingdon. Bill took some trouble to explain to me this was
because he had got fed up with doing it almost alone. The races are still being run - for the over forties but under the BC banner because
he get s the full support of the Hillingdon British Cycling orientated infrastructure to support him. You can draw your own conclusions
from these stories but mine are that we will only continue to thrive if we help ourselves and we must therefore be continually vigilant
that we encourage and make it as easy as possible for new organisers to come forward all the time - and then support them properly.
That's down to everybody in the regions as well as us in the centre.
All the events I rode were generally well organised with one or two exceptions that we got away with - just! The exec team is determined
and focussed on doing everything it can to promote safe racing and we are prepared to take a hard line and spend money where its
required.
This may lead to the loss of one or two organisers but if that is the case - so be it. Rider safety must be paramount in all our race
promotions.
For the first time this year we are having to cope with a formal complaint from a rider about the organisation of a race from a number
of different aspects including safety. That is ongoing but it clearly emphasises the need for ever increasing vigilance on safety and
remembering what our fundamental objectives are.
We also have had three complaints recently from Parish Councils commenting on and complaining about road use, standards of riding
etc and w ear dealing with these. It does however emphasise the need for constant awareness of standards of behaviour in the widest
possible sense.
Some organisers also seem to be forgetting that prizes should reflect age group results in the first instance and then the overall race
results if finances allow. We must take some action to emphasise that aspect to our whole organisation and clearly this is fully aligned
with our stated objectives.
External relations
I have maintained personal contact with various individuals in BC and TLI and certainly we and TLI have agreed to be as mutually
supportive as possible and there is a good working relationship between the two organisations. The same cannot quite be said for BC
who whilst acknowledging the value we add - and we have their President riding our races, still do not want to recognise us officially as
a valid organisation in the sport. I reported more fully in the last VL on that issue no more need be said.
Finances
Ian will provide more detail – but we are in a strong position. The invitation to regions to invest in electronic timing equipment still
stands - and we will help finance. We are still waiting for uptake however. I feel the main blocker to making this technology more widely
available is the need for a nominated individual to be guardian of the equipment on a local basis . And therein lies the difficulty - very
few people actually want to do anything for the greater good.
The Veteran Leaguer: Autumn 2011 Page 7

With regard to the Stallard series - In addition to the sponsorship provided by Onimpex we have subsidized the Overall prizes for the
Percy Stallard Series again this year - we put just over £1300 into the prize pot.
We have doubled the third party insurance liability for members to £10m which keeps us in line with BC and TLI and still makes us
excellent value for money. This is the largest one off item in our cost base. As I stated last year we have now also taken out additional
insurance for the directors to ensure they have the best possible protection in the event of them being sued for negligence. This is
extremely unlikely but we need to be very prudent these days.
Web site
It is about 5 years years old now and all the feedback indicates it has been a great success. My view is that it is gradually becoming the
main communications medium for the whole of the LVRC.
We continued to invest in the web site this year and most of you will have noticed the new look and feel which has only generated
positive feedback that I am aware of. There was one high profile exception but with hindsight I think he must have been looking at the
wrong web site.
We have just very recently given the Percy Stallard series a higher profile on the home page as well.
We will also be continuing to invest in the on line membership registration system. We have 7 out of 10 regions on the system but it is
an ongoing frustration that regions 2,3 and 4 do not feel able to join in for one reason or another. We have offered to help them adopt
the system and wait for any requests they may have. Whatever requests are made will be viewed positively as we believe it will be good
use of members funds. Mike Cross will provide more details on this system in his piece.
The next step is to automate the issuing of licences as far as we can and we may well adopt a similar process and system to that used by
TLI as theirs does seem to work. Watch this space.
Online race entry system.
Entry Central system which can be made available for organisers to access - BUT it has costs associated with it of up to £1.50 per entry
but that is the way we will be moving somehow in the future --- have no doubt. If anybody wants to volunteer to take on this small
project it can probably be available for organisers in 2012 - if nobody comes forward - If I get the time I will try and make it available for
organisers to use if they want to for 2012 on a trial basis - It should not be a huge amount of work from what I understand.
Looking forward to 2012
Our objectives are quite simple - and I believe we do a good job in meeting those objectives for our membership.
In Summary
An excellent programme of racing in 2011 and I am sure will be replicated in 2012
Gradually Growing membership base
On going investment in our infrastructure – web site, electronic timing equipment
Challenges to get more people actively involved
From the start the new Virgin Active team showed their presence and
a group of and Jim Moffatt (C category riding as A), Aaron McAffertey,
Steve Ferris and Ian Holmes got together and prised their way off the
front of the bunch who in turn split into two groups, these 4 worked
as a well drilled working quartet and comfortably lapped the field as
they came into the finish McAfferty worked hard to get around the
hardworking Moffatt.
A brisk starting race involved many early skirmishes, until Martin
Hackley – Team Jewson/MI Racing put in a hard turn up to the finish
and quickly disappeared from the bunch he was later joined by Joe
Quill - Corley Cycles and these two then set about the hard work of
staying away. Both worked well together and at the finish were half
a lap up on the main bunch, on the run in the sprint was taken by
Hackley, and Pete Trotman – Daventry CC took the bunch sprint for
3rd place with arms held high unaware of the escapees.
FRIDAY 6th MAY – REGION 6
WYRE FOREST CRC CIRCUIT RACE
Stourport is a purpose built cycling track, about 1.5km long, silky
smooth road surface that rolls gently up and down, it has various
turns both left and right but its main features are two gently banked
hairpins.
The race started off at a fairly sedate pace with I'd guess around
15 riders in the bunch, this was scheduled for 50 minutes + 5 laps,
usually in a shorter event the attacks come thick and fast and this
race was no exception. By half way through we were down to group
of six who quickly pulled away about a 20 second lead. There were
two Brooks riders in this group who of course worked as a team to
make sure one was attacking while the other sat on and vice versa.
This certainly made for interesting racing.
After attack, counter attack and chasing for the majority of the next
20 minutes or so the pace dropped as the six riders (myself included)
started plotting the best strategy for the finish. The lull in the pace
allowed a number of riders who had been chasing to get back onto
the group... I'm not quite sure how many.
I decided to go for a long one, sprinted out of the hairpin and just
kept going as hard as I could through the following two corners up to
the line, I could hear someone catching me as I was going up to the
finishing line and I either managed to lose 1st place or hang on to
2nd in the lunge for the line.
After some time spent looking at video reviews the verdict came
back and confirmed what I already knew, 2nd place by a wheel
length, a fine finish by Chris Horsfield from Brooks to take the win fair
and square.
Overall a very good race, excellent facilities and organisation so
thank you to all concerned from Wyre Forest CRC for this.
CD REPORT FROM STEVE JOHNSON, BIRKENHEAD CC
Fortunately the inclement weather of the night before cleared to
leave dry roads on a very testing course. The blustery conditions
and two climbs on each of ten laps however still providing a tough
challenge and good racing.
A break of six riders went away on the first lap and never looked
like being caught, opening up a gap of over five minutes with three
laps to go. With five ‘c’ riders and Andy Donaldson as sole ‘d’ rider,
Andy could have been excused for hitching a ride, but everyone in
the break pulled really well.
At the finish it was strong men Marrows and Donaldson who fought
out to the line taking their respective category wins.
Tour of the Abberleys 2011 -
a sideways view from the back
by Patrick Douglas
Prologue
You know you’re in bad shape when, whilst tackling the
short hill at Berrow Green, you’re not even confident about
staying in the bunch. I used to be great at climbing, or at
least I thought I was. I once nearly beat Chris Young for a hill
prime, does second count? I once nearly won a road race at
Ripponden in the Pennines. I was once the third counting guy
that allowed Airedale Olympic to win the YCF hill climb team
prize. How had it all changed? Well, all that was 25 years, two
stone, and half a lifetime ago.
Ever the optimist I decided to enter the Tour of The Abberleys,
probably the LVRC’s leading stage race. It was nearly game
over for everyone before a pedal had turned as Stuart Hall the
organiser, not the 1970s Mancunian wordsmith and football
pundit, had to pull out due to work commitments, with a few
weeks to go. Mike Amery and Sean O’Toole with volunteers
from Solihull CC, Worcester St Johns and many others, very
kindly stepped in to pick up the race and ensure its continuing
success.
My wife and I travelled down from Leeds the day before the
start and stayed in a nearby B&B, so that I would be well rested
for the morrow. I’ve got to say that it’s probably the best B&B
we’ve ever stopped in. When we arrived we were served with
home made cheesecake and plum cake with lashings of tea,
served with a china service, overlooking manicured gardens
with views of Abberley church in the distance. I can’t tell you
where it is though, just in case I race there next year, they’ve
only got one bedroom and I don’t want anyone else to nab it!
Prior to the race, I could have taken every single prize on
offer. A bold claim you may think, but I could have easily done
it. Easily. Not by winning every stage and prime, but instead,
by walking off with the envelope containing all the prizes,
kindly donated by Epic Cycles. I first met Phil, the proprietor
of the bike shop, a number of years ago as we travelled out to
ride the Gran Fondo Campagnolo, but that’s a whole separate
story. This time, we met up the night before the race and Phil
asked me to pass the envelope to Mike Amery.
Stage 1 – TT 3.5miles Woodbury Hill
How hard could it be to race for 3.5 miles? Well, judging by
the number of riders coughing their guts up, back at the HQ
after the stage finished, pretty hard. In fact Abberley Village
Hall sounded more like a 1920s TB clinic than a race HQ. Loads
of old guys with consumptive hacking coughs sprawled out
all over the place. Earlier that morning they’d all been healthy,
tanned, lean, veteran riders. But that was before the time trial.
I had a great result – second. Actually it was second last.
I’ve always hated time trials so I avoid riding them. Maybe I’ve
avoided riding at all too much? Looking around me though,
at the wheezing casualties in variable states of distress, I
wondered why I was the only person whose lungs felt, and
sounded, normal. Then the kernel of an answer entered my
mind. Maybe I hadn’t pushed myself hard enough in the TT?
Though, at least I thought, I wouldn’t be ruined for stage 2.
Stage 1b
The organisers hadn’t planned for a stage 1b, but they also
hadn’t planned for one of the windiest weekends on record.
The ride back to the changing room at the village hall should
have been easy. Think about it – a hill climb prologue should
mean an easy descent but it didn’t quite feel like that as we retraced
the route. Then, of course, there was the small matter of
climbing back up the A443, which is mostly a 1 in 8. No wonder
all those riders looked so ill back at the HQ afterwards!
Stage 2
We had to ride up Woodbury Hill again. As if we hadn’t had
enough first time. Luckily though, it was neutralised so at least
I didn’t get dropped. The circuit was 5 laps of the Wichenford,
Ockeridge, Hill Side, Martley loop with, you guessed it, Berrow
Hill thrown in at the end to make it easier for the judges to
spot the placings. I’d done this circuit before, the last time I
did the Abberleys. On that occasion I’d punctured on the first
lap descending from Hill Side so I hoped for better luck this
time. The circuit is one of the reasons why the Abberley’s is
so wonderful to race in. The riders pass through some of the
most wonderful rural countryside the nation can offer. Small
lanes, orchards coming into flower, warm sun, sleepy villages,
tall hedgerows, country pubs. A rural idyll and may it never
change. The signing and the marshalling was great on the
route here, as there were several hard left turns onto seemingly
ever smaller roads.
Meanwhile, several of the riders at the front were trying to
break away and the speed was going up and up. On one of the
laps, the speed was brutal as we flashed through the villages.
Another left turn and onto one of those roads that looks as if
it should be flat and easy, but instead, I found myself changing
down the gears whilst my heart rate changed up the gears!
Within a few hundred yards I felt I was at my limit. You know
when you are about to get dropped? As a responsible rider,
you take a look around to check that you aren’t going to take
anybody else out of the back? I took the look back, about to
blow, but by some determination, or maybe it was a miracle, I
managed to hang on.
Later on, a strange thing happened. I started riding near the
yellow jersey wearer. Normally that would mean riding at or
near the front. I took a look around me. No, pretty definitely
about two thirds of the way back in the bunch. Maybe he’d
just dropped back for a moment, I thought. Then I took a closer
look at him. The poor fella was blowing big time, looked like
he’d got super hunger knock. When the road flattened out or
went downhill, he’d ride back to the front, but on every uphill
stretch, he’d drop way back. People reckon that you should ride
a TT so that you leave nothing behind, totally empty yourself.
He’d certainly done that, having taken a convincing win in the
prologue, but now he was paying the price.
A final sprint up Berrow Green concluded the stage.
Page 16 The Veteran Leaguer: Autumn 2011

Stage 2b
Same as stage 1b except a bit longer this time, just as
tough.
Stage 3
“Sorry lads, there’s going to be trouble. They’re organising a
protest in one of the villages against the race.”
So explained Mike, the organiser.
“I’m not sure what will happen but I’m going to go out there
and find out what their concerns are. Just be prepared to stop
if I ask you to.”
Gosh. He certainly had our attention. One gets used to a
certain amount of anti-cycling feeling in built up urban areas
where I’m from, but it was something of a surprise down here
in the heart of rural Worcestershire.
“It’s not too far after you turn left after Berrow Green.”
Images of French farmers burning sheep or throwing tons of
fruit in the road sprang to mind. Bernard Hinault was once in a
race that was stopped by protesters. His way of dealing with it
was to punch one of them in the face. They were, he explained,
preventing him from doing his job.
Woodbury Hill was, thankfully, neutralised again. I was
chatting to one of the lads on the ride out. He’d done ok in the
first couple of stages and was in 4th overall.
“I’m in a different race to you.” I explained “It’s more to do
with seeing if I can get round without being dropped.”
The first time up Berrow Hill was hard but I made it with the
bunch. All I had to worry about then were the demonstrators.
I expected tractors to be dragged across the road. Piles of
tyres on fire. People with placards telling us to go back home.
Mike had obviously done a great job as not a single protester
could be seen.
Another warm and windy day, some more fabulous rural
roads to be raced on. Then we turned left. I think the Paris-
Roubaix organisers had been out here to lay down some real
rough roads, just for their personal amusement. Gosh, the
road surface was shocking. For a good mile or so, we might as
well have been riding a spring classic in Belgium. There was no
clear line to take, bottles were jumping put of their cages, guys
were pointing out the worst holes. People were praying their
rims were strong enough, then, as suddenly as it had started, it
finished. We were back on a lovely smooth fast road. Another
couple of miles later the shout came down the bunch to watch
out. In the middle of the road, on its own, a huge sharp lipped,
tyre blowing pot hole. Luckily we all missed it.
Second time up the approach to Berrow, I was in the wrong
position. I knew I was in the wrong place, but I wasn’t strong
enough to move up. Consequently I got dropped. I was on my
own. What if the protesters suddenly appeared and mugged
me?
The C plus group set off ten minutes behind so I decided to
ride at a reasonable pace and await “the catch.” I think I did
about a lap and a bit before I was caught. All I had to do then
was sit at the back of the group, which wasn’t so bad.
The subsequent climbs up Berrow Green weren’t too bad, in
other words I got up it OK with the group. I then realised, or
so I thought, that my problem was that I was getting too old
to ride with the A’s and B’s. I was giving eight years away to
some of the younger guys. Yes, that was it, definitely getting
too old.
An old mate of mine, Tony May, got third on the stage in the
C plus group. He was originally from the Midlands, less than
twenty miles from the Abberleys, but has spent most of his
adult life as a displaced person in the wonderful county of
Yorkshire. It was his first race for eleven years and the placing
was a demonstration of his pure class, at least that’s what he
told me recently! He’s one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met
and I always enjoy riding with him.
A chat with Gaz Hill in the changing rooms afterwards didn’t
exactly confirm my feelings about getting too old for the A’s
and B’s.
“I tell you what, it was absolutely brutal last year going up
Berrow Green. I was really chewing the stem. It was absolute
murder, every single lap.”
If a guy like Gaz Hill says it was tough, then it must have been
dire. Maybe it wouldn’t be so easy with the C’s and D’s for me
in future after all.
Anyway, I finished at the back of the group and hung around
for a short while afterwards.
“The best I’ve gone for a long time. I had great legs, then
look at what happened.”
One of the Ferryhill Wheelers guys was complaining bitterly
at his bad luck. I think he’d been away with another guy and
had whacked into the aforementioned pot hole, puncturing
his back tyre.
He had no way of getting back to HQ on a flat tyre so, after
finding out that he was using Campag ten speed, I lent him my
back wheel.
I had a lift back in the car as my wife had brought it to near
the finish. No stage 3b for me this time!
This was my third time riding the Abberley’s and I’m sure,
like many others, I had seen the signposts for Witley Court but
not known what it was. Time to investigate, post stage.
Witley Court was one of the finest English Country Houses,
most notably added to by the Dudley family who, it seemed,
owned massive interests in Midlands manufacturing, coal
mining etc. The site is absolutely huge. It changed hands in
The Veteran Leaguer: Autumn 2011 Page 17

the 1920’s and the new owner, whilst he was a millionaire,
could have done with being a multimillionaire, to cover the
enormous maintenance costs of the house. A fire in 1937
damaged one wing of the house and the owner decided to
sell the property, contents, land, outbuildings etc at auction.
However with war looming, there was very little confidence,
nor money to spare. The auction was a disaster, with almost
every lot failing to meet reserve. The house was eventually
sold for scrap!
With the lead stripped from the roofs it rapidly fell in to
a state of disrepair and ruin. Great Witley Church sits right
next door to the ruins of the house. Fortunately it has been
well looked after and is currently one of the finest Baroque
churches in the country. You enter through a massive door
and are immediately awestruck by the gold reliefs and ceiling
paintings. The day we visited there was a choral practice by
the choir, their fine voices beautifully complementing this
grand, Italianate interior. Well worth a visit.
Stage 4
Prior to the stage in the changing room, a guy wearing
cycling kit walked up to me and said “Hello Paddy.” I had to
do a double take. It was Martin Harris, a guy I’ve known since
the early 1980s through Leeds St Christophers CC, but moved
down to the Herefordshire region, not far from the delightfully
named England’s Gate, ten or fifteen years ago to buy and
run a farm. I’d dropped by to see him around four years ago,
having cycled over from the Cotswolds. We caught up with
news a little bit, but I was already one of the last guys left in the
changing room, he wished me luck for the race.
One lap up Clows Top, Newnham Bridge to Great Witley,
followed by two laps of the Holt Heath circuit.
This stage had more fabulous country roads, especially on
the Holt Heath circuit. The bunch set off at a cracking pace
towards Clows Top, in fact it was so cracking that I nearly
cracked! I couldn’t get dropped this early on, surely? The GC
riders were testing each other out, the number 11 guy making
a number of attacks. With a cross headwind and an uphill drag,
we were all lined out in the left hand gutter and, because I was
weak, I was hanging on the back. Thankfully I made it to the
top and, when we turned left, life got a lot easier. There was a
block headwind on the flat part of the A443. A through and
off line formed. One of the guys, Tim, who I know from racing
at Manchester velodrome, went through. It looked hard. He
only went through once. He was going a lot better than me so
I decided that I wasn’t going to put my nose in the wind.
Soon enough, the main climb started. It’s a really tough haul
in three distinct stages. I more or less got up the first part and
thought I was going ok but, as soon as the next bit started I
slipped off the back. I could see a guy in front and I tried to
set my pace to gradually haul him back. I eventually got over
the top, for the descent to Great Witley and a long main road
section to Holt Heath. I could see a guy in the far distance
and I set myself to TT mode. I got into a good rhythm but it
took what seemed like forever to make any gain. I eventually
caught him up after the next left turn. Again, some fabulous
lanes to race along in this area. We combined together quite
well and after a while caught another rider. We took it in turns
to do a decent tap on the front. I did one long fast stretch then
swung over, figuring I’d eat some energy bar whilst at the back.
We hit a tough uphill drag, I found it hard, I couldn’t breathe
well, what with being unfit and having a mouthful of food. I
slipped off the back.
On my own again I managed about another three quarters
of a lap before the C plus group caught me. They only had
about twelve guys in the group so I sat on the back so as not to
interrupt their racing. I got dropped by the group at the exact
same place as the previous lap. To be fair, the lads were going
like hell at this point, it being about four miles before the end
of the stage, riders trying to get away and get the jump on
the sprinters. Anyway, I rolled across the finish a few minutes
behind them.
Last overall in the A & Bs. Oh dear. At least I finished.
Back at HQ I thought I’d get a massage from one of the three
masseurs that the organisers had kindly arranged, donations to
the Midlands Air Ambulance to cover. I understand that they
were in training and had to clock up a certain amount of time,
“hands on” to qualify or re-qualify. I’d had a massage at the
end of stage 2 from the gentleman masseur. On that day, one
of the women was massaging a guy who had massive thighs.
He must have had a tight spot somewhere because every time
she touched a certain point, he yelped in pain. Meanwhile, I
received a wonderfully comfortable massage.
Unfortunately after stage four, my massage was with that
same woman, or should I say, the masseur from hell! (Actually
she was very nice, it’s just that she wanted to get to the real
roots of my tired muscles.) Apparently she used to work with
the national squad and was now in the process of re-qualifying
after having had a number of years off to raise her family. This
was no relaxing massage, such as I’d enjoyed the other day.
Now I could understand why that other rider felt so much
pain. I was grimacing, yelping, gasping, tensing. I knew that
the outcome would be good for me, but, by God, it hurt like
hell. I could hear in the main hall that the prize presentation
was going on, so for all the riders who were there, you now
know who was doing all the squealing outside on the massage
table!
Another superb edition of the race, my thanks to the
organisers and all the helpers and yes, even to the masseurs!
Last on GC, not a very good result but at least I finished. I
should be back next year and will hope to improve. I can’t do
any worse!
Vehicle Excise Duty for Cyclists?
by Allan Ramsay
Given there was a time (not too long ago) that brightness
wasn’t needed to pass a driving test, and in fact it was possible
to get a driving licence without taking a driving test (simply
get a friend to take it, or in some instances there were people
running a ‘business’ taking the test for a small fee – around
£500) it’s understandable that there’s many an ignoramus
driver, who thinks road construction and repair is paid for with
‘road tax’.
The worst of it is, these idiots don’t think cyclists have a right
to be on the road because they don’t pay the so called ‘road
tax’. Consequently, it’s totally acceptable to intimidate, and
hurl verbal abuse, or even ‘missiles’ at cyclists. Indeed, it’s oddson
that many a cyclist has been run off the road and injured
by these drivers. How many cyclists might have been put in
wheelchairs or killed by these ‘terrorists’?
Law’s to punish and prevent such actions are pretty weak to
say the least, and with high fuel prices forcing people to get
on a bicycle to survive, stiffer penalties for drivers who injure
cyclists are needed. If looters are the scum of the earth, drivers
who intimidate vulnerable cyclists, are right there along side
them.
Unfortunately, Mike Penning, minister for road safety, who
could put matters right –humanely right – doesn’t appear to
be on the cyclists side. Earlier in the year, in a parliamentary
debate about allowing motor sport to use public highways, he
ignored a call to allow cycle sport to benefit from the same
relaxation (in Belgium all cycle racing enjoys the safety of
roads closed to motor vehicles, indeed no vehicle can even
park on the course during a race)
Also during the debate Mr Penning was recorded as saying:
“We also need to ensure that the motorist, who predominantly
pays for our roads, is not inconvenienced too much.” Should
he be in his job if he doesn’t know that roads are paid for out
of the consolidated fund and motorists haven’t directly paid a
penny for roads since 1937? Roads are paid for out of general
and local taxation.
It needs stressing that not one single penny from car tax
goes to building or maintaining roads. Vehicle Excise Duty is
a tax on vehicles, not a tax to pay for roads. Somebody please
tell the minister, and put an end to this war against cyclists.
This piece was sent to 20 odd newspapers and a few TV
programmes. It was used as lead letter in two of my local papers
where, not suprisingly, it attracted criticism from the anti-cycling
brigade.
One writer used words like naivety, ridiculous, and nonsensical,
pointing out that since I'd argued that roads are paid for out of a
consolidated fund, I was wrong to say motorists are not paying
"one single penny".
I wrote back acknowleding the oversight, but that I had used
"directly" earlier in the letter. I also took the oppotunity to show
how motoring - with all the hidden costs of pollution, injury,
illness, sickness/disabilty benefit, etc. - is effctively subsidised from
other forms of taxation. It was also used as a lead letter.
Book reviews
By Dick Selley
Shay Elliott The life and death of
Ireland’s first yellow jersey
By Graham Healy with Richard Allchin
ISBN 978-1-874739-59-3
Shay started cycling in 1947 and
developed into a very good rider, good
enough to move to France in 1955 and
initiate the well known English speaking
succession at ACBB, the premier Parisian
club. They knew they had an exceptional
talent in Shay which he proved by
becoming “Best Amateur in France”, this
was always considered the stepping
stone to a pro contract.
In my first club, the South Eastern Road
Club, the club’s ace Mick Twitchett rode
a Helyett cycle and it was a beautiful
bike. Shay joined Jacques Anquetil and
Andre Darrigade in Helyett colours, he
was taken on as a strong workhorse and
basically that defined his career.
He was generous in his efforts for
his team but lacked the selfish gene of
riders such as Tom Simpson and Jean
Stablinski.
His ability to “read a race” and do what
ever was necessary without instruction
from others meant that he was often in
a the kill and his palmares reflect this
with seven wins in his debut season, a
pretty good start which also included
14th in the Worlds.
A decade in the pro peloton rewarded
Shay handsomely, but he was too
trusting. Time after time he was let
down by his “friends”, in racing, when
Stablinski effectively bought the Worlds,
which should have been Shay’s(2nd),
in love and business when their hotel
venture foundered. There were some
loyal friends such as Peter and Mary
Crinnion thank goodness.
the Manx Trophy twice and countless
criteriums. I remember seeing him in the
Crystal Palace race when he, Tom and
Alan Ramsbottom gave a masterclass in
racing to the British pros (1964).
The chapter at the end of the book
about Shay’s death makes sad reading
but the whole book is fascinating, the
authors have done a great job researching
his career and we must applaud this
trailblazer, who with Brian Robinson
showed what could be achieved “over
there” and led to the current situation
with Bradley, Mark and the Sky boys
enthralling us all this season.
This book is available from Sport
and Publicity but make sure you find
out about the illustrations, I had to put
these in myself, however, this was an
interesting challenge.
“Racing through the Dark” The fall
and rise of David Millar. By David
Millar
We have all watched David Millar’s
career since he turned pro in 1997, since
when he has often been in the news.
However news articles only show part
of his story.
Chris Gunter gave me a copy of his
book and said he “couldn’t put it down”,
I agree Chris, it is a fascinating read
which I commend to you all. He may
win a second copy of the book as I have
decided to give one to each category
winner in the “Andy Hardy Memorial
Race” at Towcester this Sunday.
David’s early life was, to say the least,
varied and challenging, and his career
path following his talent and his love
of the sport took him to the almost
inevitable question “to dope or not to
dope?”. We all know what happened, but
by reading his book we will discover why
it happened and how he dealt with it.
He soon realised that within the pro
ranks, “Omerta” was the rule, this was a
subject not to be discussed in public,
and even worse, riders and management
were telling lies about the situation and
had been for decades.
After his fall from grace and having
been caught, he confessed and served
his 2 year ban.
David’s saviour was and is Jonathan
Vaughters and his Garmin Slipstream
team.
His salvation has been his willingness,
and his need, to confess to his mistakes,
and to broadcast his experiences for
present and future riders to learn from.
All this is the direct opposite of most
athletes who deny, deny, deny until the
very end when they reluctantly admit
to their involvement (Virenque, Landis,
Hamilton et al).
There are interesting passages
detailing his friendships with David
Brailsford and Mark Cavendish.
Late in the book there is a short chapter
on David’s participation in the 2007 Tour
and the epic stage to Canterbury where
he took the KOM jersey. Imagining that
there may have been a young person
watching the race who may aspire to
become a pro racer, David closes by
saying “I’ll do my best to make sure he
never has to experience what I went
through to get there”.
As a logical follow up to all this David
challenged Lance Armstrong to join him
in the fight to clean up cycling. Lance
did not respond as David had hoped he
would and he thinks that it may have
been the beginning of the end of their
friendship!!!!
The book concludes with his gold
medal TT at the Commonwealth Games
in Delhi, graphically illustrating the pain
and suffering top riders go through to
achieve their goals.
He realises that he has earned his
“second chance” success and ultimately,
also, REDEMPTION.
“Racing through the Dark” is published
by Orion Books ISBN 978 1 4091 1494 9
Retirement when it came was sad,
he left France having lost his fortune
with one small suitcase, much as he had
arrived a decade earlier.
Shay had left his mark on the
continental cycling scene winning
Het Volk, stages in all the Grand Tours
including two or three days in yellow, to explain how he became a doper,
Book reviews
By Dick Selley & Gordon Daniels
Pedalare! Pedalare! by John Foot
Written by a distinguished academic,
if John Foot’s style is magisterial, there
is nothing musty about Pedalare!
Pedalare! It’s engaging and easy to
read. A dark bar hidden in an affluent
part of Milan, at one a watering hole
for old men and a shrine to the past
of Italian cycling, provides the start
and finish to this highly researched
history of a once national sport.
Characters from the early days of
Italian cycling are brought to life
again. Alfredo Binda had a style so
fluent that he ‘pedalled on air’. A
number of writers regarded him as
the greatest Italian rider of all time.
The rough-hewn Ottavio Bottecchia
shone briefly only to die in mysterious
circumstances perhaps the victim of
a fascist-inspired plot.
The rebirth of Italy and its people
after the war was reflected in the
Giro d’Italia, particularly that of 1946
as the country struggled towards
normality. A proletarian sport,
cycling had a resonance since many
people used the bicycle as a means
of transport and identified with the
star professional riders of the day.
Fausto Coppi and Italy’s revival are
intertwined and the unifying myth of
Bartali, which deflected the country
from revolution and civil war in 1948,
is firmly established. The years of
their rivalry has become known as
the Golden Age of Italian cycling.
Nothing has come close to it since.
Although generally peerless in their
pomp, they did not go unchallenged.
Fiorenzo Magni, the third man of
Italian cycling, frequently beat them
on his day. With a blurred war record
there was more to him than the
man who introduced extra-sportif
sponsorship - in his own case Nivea
cream - to cycling.
Italian society changed with
urbanisation, the rise in consumerism
and the decline of Catholicism
and communism. Cycling became
influenced by big business.
Formulaic and vapid, its proletarian
roots began to disappear and, aided
by doping, it declined as a national
sport in the twenty years before the
turn of the last century. By failing to
confront doping in the sixties the
authorities were guilty of complicity
which has consequences to this
day. Fraudulent, cycling cheated
the public and sponsors and has
been rightly condemned by many
observers. Despite its efforts it still
struggles to present itself as ‘clean’.
Dopers are not ostracised. Rather,
with time, they are rehabilitated. The
beautification of Marco Pantani -
central to the doping culture in recent
years - tells all. Camouflaged by
analysis and debate, experts ensure
that cycling itself is disregarded
amongst the detritus of talk whilst
its dilemma is obfuscated. John
Foot presents an essential book for
anyone who cares about cycling and
its self-destruction.
FORMER OLYMPIAN HARRY LODGE TAKES
BASSO CUSTOM FIT TEST AT SPIRIT BIKES
Most of us have set up a position
on a bike and said “That’ll do!”
The human body is one of the
most adaptable machines on earth and
it will work, even if it is forced to work in
a poor position.
At Spirit Bikes “That’ll do” does not
exist. Harry was invited by Chris Parks,
Bike Fit Specialist to come along to their
premises on Rabans Lane in Aylesbury
in Buckinghamshire.
” From the moment I walked in, I felt
reassured that here was a guy who
understand what correct bike position
testing was all about………and after
35 years in cycling I’ve had many tests.
Obviously, I had to bring my current
cycling shoes. I changed into my cycling
clothes and the test began.
Chris took a series of body
measurements which were fed into
the Spirit Bikes positioning software
program set with the rider’s specific
discipline – Time Trialling, Road Racing,
Track Racing, Sportive Riding or Cycle
Touring. Each discipline requires a
different set up requirement to ensure
an optimum position. Spirit Bikes have
a bank of set ups for all types of cycling.
I chose the road racing position, despite
not having raced for several years now!
Each leg was measured separately,
from knee to ankle and also from knee
to top inside leg – together with each
arm, chest and back length.
Chris put me on the custom bike
rig and I clipped into the pedals. My
saddle height was set according to the
body measurements taken. Checks and
tests were taken on my leg position at
the bottom of a pedal revolution and
at 90 degree power stroke, and knee
position in relation to this, to make sure
my saddle position was an optimum
one. I was very comfortable with a
near perfect set up at the first time of
trying.
However Chris was not satisfied and
set about checking my shoes. Since
I stopped racing, I have been very
good at making do, but by inserting
a small wedge to raise one side of my
shoe cleat the lateral movement in my
pedalling arc was eliminated.
We then agreed on top tube length,
frame size and stem length, handlebar
width and brake hood setting, whilst
maintaining careful attention to saddle
height and saddle positioning over the
bottom bracket.
Spirit Bikes has built its increasing
reputation for excellence of service by
listening to the requests of its clients
and by accommodating feedback when
finalising a custom set up.
At all phases during my bike fit, Chris,
a cyclist of much experience in a variety
of disciplines, listened to what I had to
say, what I had found had worked for
me in the past and what hadn’t. Most
people in the past had suggested I
used 175mm cranks, but I never got on
with them – this was taken into account
when we did the test and I used my
preferred 172.5mm cranks.
I came away from Spirit Bikes
absolutely reassured about my
new bike position and had learned
something new at the same time. I 've
used this new set up for eight weeks
now and I am very pleased with the
results. I would recommend this test
to any cyclist from rank amateur to
seasoned professional, and as a must
have for anyone taking this sport
seriously.
Point of view by Tom McCall
I want to take a moment to talk
about Steve Watson who is going to
live and work in Australia to be near
his family. Most of you will be aware
that he has served on the National
Executive Committee for a few years
now, but he has also been the mainstay
behind the Mstina Sharp for Prostate
Southern Jersey Series. This series was
devised by Steve, who obtained the
co-operation of both Mstina and Sharp,
and it has been most successful in the
few years it has been run. It has been
well-supported, and it has been keenly
contested. GC leaders have a special
vest to wear at each event supplied by
Mstina. When you get one stalwart like
Steve who devises a series, and then
runs with it week on week, producing
the up-to-date GC lists, it becomes a
hard act to follow when he is suddenly
no longer around. Thankfully one brave
soul has emerged who is prepared to
take up the reins. This is Robin Parker
from East Grinstead, who has recently
returned to the sport, and is happy
to do his bit right away. He will have
unofficial help from a few quarters,
but there is one thing that needs to
be underlined. All you guys who line
up in the Jersey Races, don’t lose sight
of the fact that a lot of work goes in
behind the scenes to keep the series
going. Any offers of help would be
much appreciated. Don’t also forget
the efforts put in by the guys and
their teams who promote events in
the series. Some have more disposal
resources than others, and all these
guys need to feel that their efforts are
appreciated. We have had some new
promoters in recent years. My message
to them is clear:- please keep it going,
as your efforts are appreciated. The
Jersey Series is loosely based on the
original Vetarace Series devised and
run by Barry Packman. That was run on
a co-operative basis with morning and
afternoon races. Participation in the
Series was conditional upon helping
out at other times, and it worked. The
only reason I am highlighting this is
to point out that races are put on with
helpers - no helpers, no races - simple
fact. Next year, please remember my
message - any offers of help overall, or
on the day, are very much appreciated.
Finally, good fortune Steve, and I hope
you enjoy your new environment
Down Under.
I got involved in an interesting
series of conversations recently on the
subject of riders’ capability in LVRC
races. The point being put across was
that some riders were so much better
than others of their age group that
they did not give lesser riders a chance.
It was also mooted that a Category
or Ability system should be brought
in, whereby these riders would be
made to ride against younger riders.
I pointed out that BC has a national
category system, but that it is not agerelated.
As soon as a rider gets older,
and starts to feel the strain, there is a
home for him in the LVRC where he
can race against his peer group. I could
not get full clarification, but it seemed
that the argument was centred around
the older age groups. Younger riders
who feel off the pace in their race can
ride in an older race to find their feet,
but once a rider enters the “Blue Rinse”
race for E/F/G/H, there is nowhere else
to go, and I suspect that this is where
the “problem” lies. Wherever you go
in life, in any athletic sport, there are
always going to different standards of
capability. Even in Veteran status, our
guys and girls who win international
events and titles are heroes, but it
is almost as if a certain faction says
“Well done, but don’t come near me”!
Where do you begin - clear them all
out somewhere else, then the next
lot will begin to dominate! Let’s put
some sense on this. Personally, I find it
a pleasure to line up with former stars,
in spite of the fact that they may beat
you out of sight. I am probably in the
middle ground here, as I am currently
recovering from a couple of strange
years where I have raced spasmodically,
but below par. I have taken plenty of
beatings during this time, but I have
soldiered on hoping that I could get
back to full strength and be more
competitive. There are plenty of guys
who line up in an LVRC race, who don’t
often get a result. These guys are the
real heroes in my book, as they line up
week after week, and compete in good
spirit. You don’t hear the complaints
coming from this quarter. All these
so-called superstars have to put the
roadwork in to get fit - nobody does
it without hard work. Personally, I have
never expected a race to be easy, so
instead of complaining about these
guys, use them as a benchmark to
better yourself! I’ll rest my case.
I worked in France for Sporting Tours
for many year, and on a recent trip my
coach was parked near the bottom of
the Hautacam where the stage would
finish. All my charges had departed
to various spots to watch the race,
and I was left alone. I fancied a ride
on quieter roads, so I rode through
Argeles-Gazost towards the Col du
Soulor. This is an agreeable climb in
two halves, with a gradual valley road
in the middle. As I topped the Soulor,
I decided to continue along the ridge
road to it’s twin peak the Aubisque
before returning for a snack at the
top of the Soulor. About 1 km along
the road, I stopped to take some pics,
and I had walked probably about 30
metres from my bike and my small
backpack. As I was returning, I could
not believe my eyes as a large pig was
taking more that a healthy interest in
the food in my bag, which I had left
open. I shouted at it, but that didn’t
do any good, so I ran up and gave it a
good slap on the rump which did the
trick, It gave me a look of disgust, but
it ambled away. I then noticed that it
joined two more pigs who had also
appeared. Needless to say, I put my bag
on my back, and scarpered as quickly
as I could. They were big enough, and
I did not need them coming at me
mob-handed. I could see the headlines
- “Cyclist savaged by pigs on Aubisqe”,
or worse still - “Cyclist eaten by pigs
on Aubisque”. I did check the situation
out at a later date, and there do seem
to be a number of wild pigs in that
area. What they eat, I cannot say, but
they obviously find enough judging by
their size. Pic as proof.
