On March 2-4, Missouri Optometric Association members joined more than 400
ODs and optometry students in Washington DC to promote optometry’s message
to our legislators. Optometry as a profession has to remain ever vigilant to the
laws and policies that affect our ability to care for our patients and provide our
patients with access to our care.
We have to stay active both in Jefferson City and Washington, DC.
P r e s i d e n t’s Message
I had the pleasure last week of delivering a 60 year AOA membership
plaque to Dr. Harvey Rider of St Joseph. It was an honor to meet Dr.
Rider, and it gave me an opportunity to think about the history of our
great profession and to consider what optometry will look like when I’ve
been an AOA member for 60 years.
The AOA and your MOA have been a resilient, progressive and eager
voice for us for many years. Your participation, whether passive or
engaged, allows you to dilate patient’s eyes with diabetes, prescribe
relief for allergic conjunctivitis, manage the healing after cataract
surgery, or remove a piece of metal from a cornea, and on and on. If you are reading this, you
were likely involved in the battles and fundraising it takes to make these things happen. We
continue to work very hard to make the future as bright as our past.
Ryan Powell, O.D.
MOA President
We are working very hard to make sure that Missouri Medicaid compensates the same service
equally regardless of the letters after the licensed provider’s name. We have to continue to
defend and promote the value of the diploma on your wall.
Cuts in Medicare have a dramatic effect on our members. Our work in Washington DC and
with local leaders is very important. We are optimistic that a new formula will settle much of the
uncertainty so that we can continue to care for our patients. As of this writing, the dust has not
settled on whether Congress will postpone the 21% cuts, but we are optimistic.
Take a moment today to be thankful for the gift we have in being optometrists and enjoy this
wonderful time of the year. I look forward to seeing all the MOA volunteers at the Leadership
Retreat at the lake June 4th-5th as we plan for the future.
MOA Assistant Executive Director Jay Hahn and several AOA staff members also joined us for
the Hill visits.
We had the opportunity to visit with all of Missouri’s legislators and shared with them our
concerns about Medicare reimbursement, patient access to care and non-discrimination
language in any healthcare reform legislation, including optometry in the National Health
Service Corps and asking them to sign on to the Optometric Equity in Medicaid Act.
It is more important than ever that we continue to stay involved on the national political scene
as many of the access issues are now dictated on the federal level.

InfantSEE® Program
Update
Over the course of 2009, the media took
an increased interest in the InfantSEE®
program.
From focusing on an infant’s visual
milestones to coverage of the signs and symptoms of visual impairment, the media sought out
and requested news from InfantSEE® with a desire to speak with providers from around the
country.
Because of this interest, the program has received national publicity. More than one billion
media impressions were secured in 2009 as a result of the 4,000 media placements earned. In
addition, 2009 was a record year for the number of assessments provided.
And just months into 2010, the InfantSEE® program’s media interest continues. In January,
the program was featured in American Baby, and interviews were recently completed with
Babytalk and You & Your Family.
Additionally, InfantSEE® has made its grand entrance into the social media sphere by setting up
a Facebook fan page and continually making contacts and building relationships with mommy
bloggers, one of the most influential Internet-based groups.
You can help promote InfantSEE® too by becoming a fan on Facebook. If you are already on
Facebook, please click on over to see our page. For individuals who are new to Facebook visit
www.facebook.com and create a free account and join the InfantSEE® Fan Club today.
We invite you log on to Optometry’s Charity to see the top media hits achieved in 2009 and
2010 for the InfantSEE® program. We are also focusing on regional media relations, so if you’d
like to promote your practice, one of your infant patients and the InfantSEE® program in local
media outlets, please contact Mark Schwartz at (314) 983-4149 or maschwartz@aoa.org to find
out more.
The Central Missouri Optometric Society met in February at Chris McD’s Restaurant in
Columbia. The program was sponsored by Inspire Pharmaceuticals and the featured lecturer
was Dr. Lynsey Bigheart from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Those in attendance shared a great meal
and took home some useful clinical pearls!
The COS did not meet in March, but plans on providing a warm reception for our MOA
president during his visit at 6:30pm on April 27 at Jina Yoos in Columbia. All MOA and COS
members are invited to attend the MOA Presidential meeting.
Greater Ozark Optometric Society
Trustee: Scott M. Burks, O.D.
At our last meeting held in February, we were pleased to host Dr. Ryan Powell, MOA
President, and Dr. LeeAnn Barrett, MOA Executive Director, for our GOOS Presidential visit.
We are planning our next meeting in late May and hope to announce a corporate sponsor
for the meeting. All MOA and GOOS Society members are invited to attend.
Kansas City Optometric Society
Trustee: Melanie Linderer, O.D.
At the beginning of April, we had a wonderful presentation by Dr. Brett King concerning
glaucoma.
In May, Dr. John Gelvin will be providing CE, and in June, we will have our annual “thank
you” BBQ for the legislature.
Northeast Optometric Society
Trustee: Mindy Blackford, O.D.
The NEOS met on February 25 at Los Jimadores Mexican Restaurant in Macon, MO.
We discussed the upcoming elections, and members volunteered to be keypersons to
the candidates for the $50 in 2-day campaign. Other topics discussed included Board
Certification, EMRs and the current Medicare situation.
The NEOS also held a society meeting on April 7 at the Pear Tree in Bevier. Guests were MOA
President, Dr. Ryan Powell, and MOA Executive Director, Dr. Lee Ann Barrett. They updated us
Our special guests at last month’s meeting were our MOA President, Dr. Ryan Powell, and
MOA Executive Director, Dr. Lee Ann Barrett. There was a good discussion about issues
affecting our profession and a frank discussion on Board Certification. It was beneficial to
have our MOA leadership sit down and share ideas and views with the members and guests
who attended the society meeting.
Our next meeting will have a representative of the MoPEB HealthCare Alliance visiting with our
society. This is the MOA endorsed health care insurance plan for MOA member offices. This
meeting will give area doctors a chance to learn more about the insurance plan.
