President’s Message
As of this writing, the MOA annual conference is just days away,
and this is my final President’s column. I enjoyed the opportunity to
serve our profession and to do my part in ensuring that the citizens of
Missouri receive the best vision and eye health care they can. Our
state does a wonderful job on both the association side of allowing
access to optometric care and on the doctor side of providing great
primary eye care. I want to highlight four key factors that affect our
ability to continue both of these in the future.
Ryan Powell, O.D.
The Children’s Vision Legislation Missouri legislators passed is one of MOA President
the greatest victories in the history of children’s healthcare in Missouri.
I hope none of us ever have to see a 3rd grader again who has been struggling in school
because of an uncorrected vision problem. This has happened too many times in my own office
and yours too. It is critically important that our state leadership understand the impact that an
early diagnosis and intervention has. When you see children for their eye exams, please report
your findings so we have information to support these children and continue providing this care.
Have you heard of Electronic Medical Records??!! 2011 marks the year for you to be
demonstrating meaningful use with your electronic records in order to receive the funds
allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Missouri Optometric
Association is helping you understand the process by offering 3 hours of Continuing Education
on this topic at the Missouri Optometric Association Convention in St Louis. There is much to
understand about the process and about how you will be reporting the meaningful use. I
encourage you to make the MOA convention a part of your yearly continuing education plan.
As we all watch election year television commercials, we understand how much money it takes
for a candidate to run for office. These candidates rely on their supporters to assist them. Missouri
optometrists have done a very good job providing financial support to candidates that are
friendly to us. It is imperative for every optometrist to understand that what you are allowed to
do in your office today is decided by legislators. Get involved in educating them and supporting
them so they understand the services and value you provide to Missouri citizens.
InfantSEE is one of the greatest public health programs ever made available to optometry. This
program gives you the opportunity to educate parents and grandparents about vision and
eye health. Do you think that your next door neighbor knows that a child who is a +4.00 in one
eye and a +1.00 in the other eye might never see well with the higher powered eye? Do you
think your friends know that your eyes have 6 muscles attached to them that must coordinate
together in order for you to see single? I would guess that your neighbor and friend don’t
know a thing about eyes or vision except that you are an optometrist. InfantSEE gives you the
opportunity to teach people about the importance of vision and eye care. It also makes the
difference in a child’s life. And guess what - you can do it! If you are not currently a provider, I
encourage you to become one. If you are currently a provider, I encourage you to start seeing
these children. Call me or email me if you have any questions. And please report your findings.
3
Thanks for allowing me the opportunity to serve our profession. Have a great fall & GO TIGERS!!

Changing Your Eye Color:
Not So Cool
Children are at risk for serious eye infections or injury
with decorative/ cosmetic contact lenses.
You’ve seen them in movies like the Twilight series
and on pop celebrities like Lady Gaga. Those cool
looking contact lenses that change the color and
look of the normal human eye. These lenses known
as “Circle Lenses” come in many colors and sizes.
They give the eye an enlarged effect by covering
the white part of the eye with the tint of a colored
contact lens. These contact lenses are sold online,
without a prescription, something which is totally
against the law in the United States.
Clarion XS
a clean shield for your lenses.
The Webster Dictionary defines Clarion as “brilliantly clear,” which is an accurate description of the
brilliantly clear and clean AR Clarion XS will bring your patients.
Ease of Care… Super hydrophobic — finger prints and face oils wipe right off, effortlessly.
The hydrophobic topcoat fused into the lens surface repels oils, dirt and water, enabling the lenses to be
easily cleaned. In fact, Clarion XS is four times easier to clean than other traditional hydrophobic
AR lenses. Clarion XS makes complaints of smudging a thing of the past!
Durability… Dramatically improves scratch resistance — Clarion XS provides up to three
times more abrasion resistance than traditional AR lenses. Its cleanability enhances clearer vision and
adds to the overall life of the lens.
Comfort… Clarion XS lets your patients see better, all the time. Whether spending time at the
computer, driving at night or enjoying a meal with friends, your patients will benefit from Clarion XS lenses.
Clarion XS is a new antireflection coating that incorporates our XTC technology, a premium AR
stack, and our new Super-Hydrophobic top coating. Clarion XS also comes in Cool Silver, Cool Gold or
Cool Blue flash mirror coating. Clarion XS carries a two year warranty.
Summers @ Mizzou...In a Pig’s Eye!
Every summer, hundreds of Missouri’s best
and brightest high school students flock
to the University of Missouri, at Columbia,
for Summers @ Mizzou youth camps.
These high school campers can pick from
variously themed, week-long vocational
adventures. Students can choose
between geotech, business, culinary,
cinematic arts, and even health care.
The organizers of Summers @ Mizzou
contacted the Missouri Optometric
Association and asked if our organization
would be willing to send a representative
to the “Scrub into Health Care” camp.
The organizers were hoping to have
someone who could describe the
optometric profession as well as provide a
hands-on activity.
I was fortunate enough to have the
opportunity on July 29 to present
information about optometry on behalf of
the MOA and the optometric profession.
My audience was twenty-eight Missouri
high school juniors and seniors interested
in pursuing a career in health care.
Determining a hands-on activity that
would appeal to high school students was
a challenge. After careful consideration,
it was decided that a pig eye dissection
would be engaging and just gross enough
to keep their interest!
After a short presentation describing the life and work of an optometrist, the students were able
to use pig eyes donated by the MOA to explore the anatomical and physiological properties of
the eye. Fun was had by all.
At the end of session, one of the students offered to discuss her personal diagnosis of strabismus
and amblyopia and how her optometrist had worked with her to diagnose and manage her
condition.
9
The director of the camp contacted me after the session and personally thanked me for my
time and to extend a thank you to the MOA for organizing the visit. She mentioned the session
was the overwhelming favorite of the students involved.
