It’s 2010, the year Bournemouth celebrates its 200th Birthday! In celebration, a
year long programme of events and activities are planned. The Chair, Councillor
Anne Filer, invites you to join in.
The town’s celebrations include a whole host of different pursuits organised by
various clubs, groups and societies for the enjoyment and inclusion of both
residents and visitors alike. 2010 has and will see people of all ages and
communities unite and commemorate the Birthday of their town.
A 2010 calendar of events can be found below, offering a range of information
and dates for you to add to your diaries, please contact the organisers directly if
you have any specific enquiries regarding an event.

16 Jan 2010 2010 5-a-side Football Tournament
A 2010 5-a-side football tournament, themed African Cup of Nations, is set to take place in the
Sports Hall at Bournemouth University on 16 January. Approximately eight teams will be taking
part and there is to be an entry fee of £5 per team.

On the 13 February the Vintage Brass Band is holding a concert at the Boscombe Salvation Army
on Palmerston Road. This community event is set to take place at 7pm and finish at 9.30pm and
will feature internationally acclaimed Euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead and La Nova Singers.

15 Feb 2010 Chinese New Year 2010 Lantern
Festival
At 3pm on 15 January a ribbon is to be cut at the Town Hall to welcome the Chinese New
Year. Following this a Chinese dragon display will be running from the Town Hall through the
Upper Gardens and up Commercial Road to Bournemouth Library, lasting roughly an hour.

16 Feb 2010 The 2010 Chinese & Heritage Event
Bournemouth Library is all geared up for the Chinese Heritage Event 2010. On display will be
Chinese opera masks, wood craft and art, costumes, Chinese story books, fung sui and much
more. This exhibition will run for four weeks.
16 Feb 2010 Chinese ‘Li See Candy’ Give-away
On the 16 February Bournemouth residents will be able to collect their traditional Li See Candy
from the Town Hall reception and Bournemouth Library.
This candy represents good fortune, luck and good health, whilst the candy connotes happiness
throughout the New Year. This Chinese tradition acts as a blessing to all who receive it.

26 Feb 2010 What a Wonderful World
What a Wonderful World is a quiz night which is to be held at the Retreat at Bournemouth
University from 6pm onwards. Tickets cost £14 per person and pairs of tickets are available at
£25. The event is a fantastic opportunity to find out about the Wessex Friendship Force while
having fun.
The quiz runs over the course of an evening and has an international theme, hot buffet, raffle
with prizes and music.

27 Feb 2010 The 2010 Rallye Sunseeker
The plans for the Rallye Sunseeker event, taking place next February, are underway.
This car rally is the largest motorsport event in the south of England and will see cars battle it out
to reach the ceremonial finishing ramp in Bournemouth first.

27 Feb 2010 The 2010 Natural History Museum
Book launch
A new book about Bournemouth’s natural history is being launched
on 27 February by Bournemouth Natural Science Society at 39
Christchurch Road. The launch will run from 10.30 – 16.00 and is
open to all, so drop in to check out the book and chat to the
authors.
The book attempts to produce a modern version of a book produced
by the Society in 1914 which details the area at that time. The new
book is a record of the flora and fauna of the area at the present
time.
The book will be available from retail outlets from January 2010.

A Fashion and Dance show is being held at the Old Fire Station in aid of Wessex Autistic
Society. The aim of the event is to raise awareness in the student community at

Through the Lens is a photography exhibition celebrating 200 years of Bournemouth, which
is being run over a two week period on Bournemouth Pier. Photographs of Bournemouth,
past and present, will be displayed along the glass divide which runs down the Pier.
The exhibition will be supported by workshops led by a professional photographer. A
competition run in conjunction with the Daily Echo will seek to uncover the best historical
photograph of Bournemouth.
06 Mar 2010 7 Again - Student Night
Gift Wrapped Events presents 7 Again at the Old Fire Station, a fundraising event in aid of
Julia’s House, the Dorset Children’s Hospice. Julia’s House is an organisation which helps
enrich and maximise the quality of life for Dorset children and young people with lifelimiting
or life-threatening conditions. They provide support from diagnosis to death and
beyond for the whole family.
For one night only the event will take you back in time to relive the best of your childhood.
Throughout the evening there will be party games, drinking games, a raffle, inflatable’s,
retro 90s anthems, retro fancy dress and more.

This performance will see The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra return for a third show in 2010.

The Pavilion Ballroom, on Westover Road, celebrates its Gala Opening Day. Between 2.30pm

In the evening between 8pm – 11pm there will be a Gala Ball which will feature a Dance

The Bourne Arts and Culture Festival introduce Unite, an event being held at Meyrick Park
from 11am – 5pm. Unite is a family activity day in aid of raising money for military charities
including The Tank Museum and Afghan Heroes. Activities on the day will include children’s
entertainment, a military exhibition, a visual tent, face painting, vintage clothing sale, mini
parade and much more. Entrance to the day is £2 per person and food and drink will also be
available.

charity 5k, 10k & fun run
Starting outside the school near Hengistbury Head the course for the 5/10k is mainly on the
prom; the 5k turns near Gordon’s zig-zag and the 10k turns at Boscombe Pier.
The fun-run is all off road. For the 5/10k runners, there is a FREE MASSAGE from
Chiropractic students after the race.

12 Mar 2010 Streetways 2010
Streetways is a school event in collaboration with RELAYS and Arts University College. The
event encourages young people to participate in urban sports and cultural events following
Bournemouth’s 200 th birthday.
The event will be split into two sessions, morning and afternoon comprising of 30 pupils in
each. There will also be skateboarding, juggling and graffiti and DJ workshops available for
the children. The event is directly aimed at 10-12 year olds and is being held at King’s Park
between 10am and 3.30pm.
12 Mar 2010 Dance Master Classes
Jonah Bokaer, media artist, will lead a master class in contemporary dance for intermediate
and advanced levels in the Pavilion Ballroom on Friday 12 March from 6.45 – 8.45pm.
Jonah’s work continues to expand possibilities for live performance through choreography,
digital media, cross disciplinary collaborations and social enterprise.
Jonah trained with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in New York and his
Choreographic work has been presented internationally.

13 Mar 2010 Under the Big Top 2010
Under the Big Top is a circus themed event being held at Bournemouth Triangle from 10am –
4pm. The event will feature circus themed workshops; life sized animal installations, an
interactive historical exhibition, face painting, vintage clothing sales and live art.
The event is completely free and is focused around young people. Under the Big Top
promotes knowledge about Bournemouth and the people who have lived in the town
throughout its 200 years.
13 Mar 2010 Parentlink Information Fair
Come along and find out about local services available to support families with SEN and
disabled children. Fun activities including juggling, card making and balloon modelling will
be held to entertain the children.
The event is free to attend as is taking place from 2pm – 4pm at Kinson Community Centre
and is organised on behalf of Parentlink.

The Festival of Stamps is being held in the exhibition area at the main Bournemouth Library.
The exhibition will jointly display stamps and a collection of postcards and will run for the
duration of the library’s opening hours. There will be a specific display of Bournemouth’s
own postal history, which begun in 1839 with a mail coach service from London to Poole.

17 Mar 2010 Dance Study Resource Launch
The Pavilion Dance will launch a new dance study resource at Bournemouth Central Library
on 17 March from 1-3pm. Jann Parry, author, will launch the event and will present a
reading from her fascinating new book followed by a question and answer section. Copies of
Jann’s book will also be available to purchase.
The launch will take place on the second floor of Bournemouth Central Library and is open
to all.
17 Mar 2010 Shamrock the House
Shamrock the House, held at the Old Fire Station, is to be held on St. Patrick’s Day and will
provide students with a fun and unique night for themselves and friends.
With green drink offers, ‘Ibiza’ clubbing atmosphere and many freebies to give away, there

20 Mar 2010 Challenge the Lifeguards
Challenge the Lifeguards is a fund raising community event based at Durely Chine which
aims to raise money for Bournemouth Life Guard Corps, a voluntary life guarding
organisation. The event starts at 12pm and will feature friendly lifeguard competitions
involving local life guards, as well as competitions for all ages.
There will also be a BBQ, fun family activities, such as face painting and sandcastle
competitions and a lifeguard DJ.

So Bazaar! is a mock indoor Bazaar accompanied by music and entertainment, held at the
vibrant and edgy venue of 60 Million Postcards at 7pm. Organised by the undergraduate
Events students at Bournemouth University, it is a free event that celebrates cultures and at
the same time, raising cultural awareness amongst students and the local community.
24 Mar 2010 1940s – 1950s Nostalgic Tea Dance
Bournemouth University students are organising a 1940s – 1950s themed tea dance for the
older residents of Winton and the surrounding area. The event will be held at the Salvation
Army Church Hall in Latimer Road, Winton and will run from 1.30pm – 4pm.
There is to be a live band, refreshments, dancing and a guest speaker. Tickets can be

BA Hons Leisure Marketing Students are organising a Rainbow which is scheduled to run from

The Fair invites the multi-cultural students and parents of Bethany Junior School Federation
to enjoy a day of exploring different nationalities through various activities such as a fun
map task. The day will enhance the Boscombe community’s knowledge of other nationalities
in a fun, vibrant environment.

Classic Cars on the Prom
Classic Cars on the Prom now enters its tenth year of car displays on Bournemouth Seafront.
From 28 March to 12 September an exhibition of ever-changing vehicles dating from 1915-
1980 will be on view along West Overcliff Promenade.
Admission for eligible vehicles is free and you do not have to pre-book, however club groups
are asked to contact the organisers in advance. The displays are open to all cars and motor
bikes registered before August 1983.

Bournemouth Triangle will be converted, for one day only, into a
large fairground of arts! A double-decker bus will play host to a
fantastic gallery of independent artists’ work for all ages to
appreciate, including fine art, graphic design, photography and
animation.
Both the marquee and the triangle will be filled with activities for
families, from a variety of different art forms. Stalls, both inside
and out on the green, will be selling a great selection of arts and
crafts including paintings, ceramics, jewelry, photography, textiles,
clothing, gifts, children’s items and much more. There will be lots
to see with live performances of dance, circus acts and more.

03 May 2010 The Donkey Derby and Fete
The Bournemouth North Rotary Club is holding a Donkey Derby and Fete on 3 May at
Pelham’s Park, Millhams Road between 12pm – 4.30pm. The event will feature seven
donkey races with real loveable donkeys ridden by children from a local riding school. The
donkeys come from a well known and reputable stables and they are used for racing under
the care of an experienced groom.
The fete will have many children’s attractions, including a bouncy castle and slide. There
will also be a variety of stalls, plenty of good food, displays from a team of majorettes and
a scout band. The dog show is being organised by the local dog’s charity, Caring Canines,
and the even will feature 10 classes fro the Prettiest Bitch, the Most Handsome Dog, the

Want to know more about the world around you? Visit the Bournemouth Natural Science
Society museum, 39 Christchurch Road, on our Saturday open mornings.
The museum is based on collections made over the last century by members of the Society.
It includes natural history specimens, finds from archaeological digs in and around the
Bournemouth area and one of the best displays of local geology. Throughout the summer
we will be opening on some Saturday mornings with special hands-on activities for all ages.

Pupils from Moordown St John’s, Muscliff, St Marks and St Michaels Primary Schools in
Bournemouth are working together to create a ‘living’ picture to celebrate Bournemouth’s
Bicentenary.
The picture depicting the unique landscape of
Bournemouth incorporating, the river Bourne, and our
golden beaches and sea, will also feature pine trees

incorporate using song and dance in a performance,
with a finale uniting the children to become a
contemporary landscape of Bournemouth.
The ‘living’ picture will be photographed from the air and made into a commemorative
postcard of the occasion. There is a unique opportunity for local businesses to get involved
in the project through sponsorship support. This ambitious project coordinated by ‘Room
13 Xtreme Arts Studio’ and choreographed by ‘Dance for All’ will be celebrated in style on
26 May at AFC Bournemouth.

contemporary music history relating to Bournemouth concerts and top venues.

2010 Streets of Bournemouth
– Virtual Museum
The unique Streets of Bournemouth website will be launched mid June 2010. Through maps,
images and themes, it traces the town’s two hundred year history. The virtual museum will
continue to evolve through its interactive wiki element where you can add your own
photographs and stories about Bournemouth.
Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project is being developed by Bournemouth
University and Bournemouth Borough Council (Bournemouth Libraries and Russell-Cotes Art
Gallery and Museum).
The ‘Streets of Bournemouth’ will become the first online museum devoted to the town's
history, and will also form a central part of celebrations to mark the town’s bicentenary in
2010.
Visitors to the website will be able to see how their own street developed by clicking down
through a layer of historical maps. They’ll also be able to call up associated images and
information about Bournemouth’s people and buildings, its development as a health and
seaside resort, and many other defining aspects of the town’s story.

12.30pm. The museum is based on collections made over the last century by members of
the Society. It includes natural history specimens, finds from archaeological digs in and
around the Bournemouth area and one of the best displays of local geology. Throughout
the summer we will be opening on some Saturday mornings with special hands-on activities
for all ages.
On Saturday 12 th June, learn all about the Ancient Egyptians. Our museum includes a room
dedicated to artifacts from this fascinating civilization. The centerpiece of the collection is
our mummy, Tahemaa, who has recently been scanned using the latest techniques. Come

This event celebrates the 100 th anniversary of the Aviation meeting at Southbourne Aerodrome in
1910. The celebrations will pay homage to the honorable Charles S. Rolls, a pioneer aviator, who
was killed at the aviation meeting one hundred years ago.
The memorial consists of a four day programme, commencing at 10am on the 9 July and runs
until 11.30pm on the 12 July.
The event will include an ecumenical church service, a wreath laying ceremony, daily public
visits to the memorial, an on site Charles S. Rolls Exhibition at St. Peter’s School in Southbourne
and a tribute centenary dinner.

10 Jul 2010 Bicentenary Community and School
Summer Fair
Kings Park Primary School and the Springbourne Residents Phoenix Group have been working
together to create a great community event, which will take place on Saturday 10 th July,
from 12noon til 4pm, at Kings Park playing field and school playground.
The Phoenix group have organized, among other things: a juggler on stilts, a mini steam
train, wriggle and rhyme sessions and most importantly a history tent displaying
photographs and information about Springbourne past. The school will be providing the
choir, dancing displays as well as other stalls and food. A time capsule competition is also
running and will be judged on the day. The capsule will be buried in the new park that will
be next to Springbourne Library.

On the 23 July four of the seven innovative sculptures are being installed on Sea Road to form
Boscombe’s first art tail. The remaining three are set to be installed by 30 September 2010.
The designs created by Dorset artist Andy Kirkby and chosen by a panel of arts professionals,
local people and ward councillor Lisa Northover, reflect the ideas put forward by local residents
of Sea Road and the Undercliff Road, and the artists’ own distinctive approach to public art.

Bournemouth’s annual youth festival: for young people, by young people.
Originally created to unite the youth of Bournemouth, Rendezvous is an arts festival
incorporating everything from live music to large art sculptures. The aim of the festival is to
provide somewhere where young people can show off their talents and appreciate the talents
of others. Starting at 12noon and ending at 9pm, Rendezvous will bring together the youth of
Bournemouth and provide a diverse range of attractions, from music and dancing to Tai Chi

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra marks Bournemouth’s Bicentenary with an amazing

Lloyd-Roberts, who will be singing among other things ‘Our
Bournemouth – the BSO’s new anthem written especially for
the Bicentenary year.
The Saturday night is the turn of Galactic Classics - a concert that celebrates all things
other-worldly through the full power and scale of a symphony orchestra, so let the BSO take

On Saturday 28 th August, we will be featuring Bones and Big Cats. Come and see the latest
evidence for the existence of big cats and make your own mind up. Our collection of skulls
and bones will give you an insight into animal anatomy. Bring along your own specimens for

On Saturday 14 th August, the morning will include two special items. If you would like to know

Don’t miss out on Charminster’s first Fun day!
Organised by the Queens Park and Charminster Community Forum, the Charminster Family
Fun Day will take place from 12noon til 4pm at Cyril Play Park in Cyril Road.
The park will be alive with plenty of community entertainment, including a memory tent
providing local history to fellow residents, a visit from the Fire Brigade and the Police PITO
van and food stalls with old-fashioned sweets, a hog roast and an ice-cream van.
There will be traditional entertainment such as a Punch n Judy show (1.00-2.00pm), Story
Time (2.00-2.30pm) and children’s sporting activities such as skipping, sack and egg and
spoon races. Children’s game stalls will be present, including trampolines, face-painting
and the football game ‘how quick can you kick’. A live band will play from noon - 1pm and
organ music will be playing during the afternoon.
The organisers of the event are also running a time capsule competition for local children,
and asking them to include what they think would be of interest in 200 years.

An exhibition of photographs and recollections celebrating Boscombe…
The Boscombe Resource Centre is a day provision for people over 18 who have disabilities
and for people with mental health needs.
The photography group have been capturing the landscape and architecture surrounding
Boscombe and looking at how this has changed through the years. People’s memories have
been recorded and will be shown alongside photographs in an exhibition. To be held in
conjunction with the centre’s summer fayre. The exhibition runs from 11am – 2pm at 2a

On Friday 10 September, Bournemouth will host the first ever UK Business Book Festival.
The festival has secured top names, including Rachel Elnaugh from Dragon’s Den and Geoff
Burch, ‘Britain’s Toughest Business Guru’, who appeared on the BBC programme All Over
the Shop. There will also be talks on How to Start Your own Café and How to Launch Your
Own Airline from people who have done it, and lived to tell the tale.
The event will be a festival of entrepreneurs, rather like the fringe at a Party Political
Conference, with dozens of seminars with different speakers taking place on several floors

Inside Out returns this September with ten days of outdoor
performances, which will transform Dorset’s rural, urban and
coastal settings into a series of magical worlds.
The festival starts with dance performances in the Town Square from 2.30pm – 7pm and then the
world premiere of “Congregation”, a new interactive video installation in Bournemouth Square,
created by KMA and curated by SCAN, that turns pedestrians into performers as they interact
with projected images, colours and shapes. “Congregation” will be in the Square from Friday
10 th – Sunday 19 th from 7.30-11pm.
The festival continues with a weekend of free outdoor dance-inspired events, presented in
partnership with Pavilion Dance. Expect the unexpected as town centre locations are
transformed by thrilling outdoor dance: Bournemouth Square on Saturday 11 th and Sunday 12 th
will host English premieres of Trajets de Ville (at 10am) and Trajets de Vie (at 4pm), whilst the
new Pavilion Dance Terrace will see the highly entertaining “Tracking” from integrated dance
company StopGAP on Saturday 11 th and Sunday 12 th at 2pm and 3.30pm.
StopGAP will be leading a workshop at Pavilion Dance on Sunday 12th at 10am. You can also
meet the artists, choreographers and curators at Pavilion Dance on Saturday 11 th September at

Museum’
A unique interactive ‘online museum’ to help mark Bournemouth’s
Bicentenary, Streets of Bournemouth charts the historical
development of Bournemouth with a collection of maps, photographs
and information. Former and current residents can upload their
photos, stories and memories via their own computers or through local
libraries, making them available for all to view. Bill Bryson (travel
writer, former resident and patron of the project) said: “The project
is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the people of Bournemouth to

26 Sept 2010 The 2010 Castlepoint Fun Run
The Castlepoint Run Fun is back following the
success of last year’s event!
Set to take place on 26 September at the Littledown
Centre between 10am and 3pm, the 2010 Fun Run will
people of all ages getting fit, healthy and on the run!
Last years event raised £2000 for the Dorset and
Somerset Air Ambulance. This year you can run for
your school, club or as an individual, and there will be
a family race for under 8’s, as well as an adults 5k
event. The entry for the adults 5k run is £5, with all
proceeds going to the Dorset and Somerset Air
Ambulance, and all children’s races are free to enter.
There will be medals for all finishers, and for schools
that enter teams, the opportunity to win a visit to
their school from Olympic marathon runner Liz
Yelling.

From Friday 1 st to Sunday 3 rd October, events will be
taking place in celebration of Mary Shelley, author of
the infamous “Frankenstein”. Most of the weekend’s
events are taking place in the atmospheric and eerily
gothic building of the Bournemouth Natural Science
Society (BNSS), 39 Christchurch Road, Bournemouth,
BH1 3NS with its splendid collection of stuffed animal
and fossil specimens. Admittance is free unless
otherwise stated.
Friday 1st October
7.30 -9.30pm Mary Shelley shares with you the tragedies, joys and scandals of her remarkable life at the
BNSS. A reluctant celebrity of her day, how does she respond to the crass television interviewing
techniques of a rising media star? Tickets £7 per person (£5 concessions).
Saturday 2 nd October
2.30 – 5pm “Shocks, Sparks and Corpses: Electricity in the 18th and 19th Centuries”: Dr. Nicholas
Cambridge of UCL talks on electricity and bringing back the dead in the 18th century. The talk is
also part of the BNSS regular Saturday lecture series. Contact BNSS for further details.
7.30 - 11pm Award winning writer, Diane Samuels presents the first rehearsed reading of her new
play, The End of the Romance, followed by discussion with playwright and caste at the BNSS. Tickets
£7 per person (£5 concessions).
Sunday 3rd October
2-3pm Artist Diane Roberts will run a children's art workshop with a Shelley theme at the BNSS.
2- 2.45pm Local Historian John Walker talks about the Shelley’s at the Shelley tomb in St Peter's
Church, Bournemouth (in Bournemouth centre behind Beale's).
3-4pm Writer, David Evans and artist, Dominic Shepherd present Gothic Bournemouth at the BNSS.
4-4.30pm “More Mary” at the Mary Shelley pub (opposite St Peter's church) followed by a brief
candlelit vigil around the Shelley tomb, and readings from Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary
Wollstonecraft.

Boscombe Crescent will be host to the first Boscombe Vintage
Market on Thursday 28 th October between the hours of 10am and
3pm.
Inspired by London markets such as Camden and Spitalfields, this
high class vintage market with ‘a creative edge’ will be selling
textiles, clothing, jewellery, furniture, collectables and unique hand
crafted goods.
Organisers believe the Vintage Market has major potential in the
area, shown by the high interest from businesses to be involved and
are planning to do a series of markets, rather than a one off. This
will help fulfill the objective of new investment for the area and a
number of businesses will be watching the success of the Vintage
Market as an indicator for the areas potential. The event is also
supported by BARG (Boscombe Area Regeneration Group), the
umbrella group that is growing to represent businesses and local
organisations in the area, including the traders.

Marine Wildlife at Boscombe
In association with Bournemouth University’s School of Applied Sciences, Boscombe
Seafront will play host to “Marine Wildlife at Boscombe” from 26 th to 27 th October, 10am –
4pm.
A two day event, there will be activities on the pier; exhibitions in the surf pods; talks,
quizzes and film footage of the reef in the Urban Reef restaurant, all offering the chance
to learn about the marine life found in Poole Bay and on the surf reef.
This event is being organised by a partnership led by Bournemouth University which is
investigating the biological colonization of the newly constructed Boscombe Surf Reef, in
Poole Bay near Bournemouth. Partner organizations include Inspieration and BARG
(Boscombe Area Regeneration Group).

the infamous Lord Byron. It was here; late at night by candlelight that
Mary discussed her fascination of the medical experiments of the 18th
century. Prompted by her imagination, Byron forms a challenge- for Mary
to create a supernatural story entirely of her own…
The Dorset Corset Theatre Company bring their own unique style of
theatrical magic, live music and drama to this fantastic tale! The Shelley
Manor Theatre, Boscombe, will host this production for four nights in
October 2010. This is your opportunity to see a theatre production in the
very theatre that was built for the Shelley Family back in the 1800’s.
