Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea – our thanks
to the office staff for organising the morning tea
within our school this week. It was especially
heartening to have Woolworths at Warringah Mall
supporting us with the donation of a $50 gift
voucher for the raffle prize. This prize is a
wonderful example of their corporate
responsibility.
Public Speaking – Matt Kearns (Year 10) and
Gemma Berkelman (Year 11) represented the
school in the Northern Sydney local final hosted by
Manly last week. Although not progressing to the
next level, they gave very strong performances
against a range of other schools. They have
benefited from the coaching initiated this year. A
more detailed report on debating and public
speaking progress this year will be printed next
week.
Cross Country – we have just heard that Manly
won the Zone Cross Country overall coming first in
the seniors and second in the juniors. Please see
the report later in this bulletin.
Entertainment Book – please find attached, later in
this bulletin, details of the Entertainment Book
being sold on behalf of the P & C. This has been a
very successful initiative in recent years supported
by Michelle Miller. Early orders are
recommended.
Warringah Sister City Student Exchange Program ‐
I strongly endorse this program for our students. In
recent years Manly Selective has always been
represented with a number of students who give
time in their holidays to experience life in a remote
NSW town with a significant indigenous population
and culture. The experiences of all past students
have been outstanding and the cultural
understandings they have developed have been
invaluable. Please see the attached flyer for
further information. Applications close June 11.
Congratulations to:
the school vocal ensemble who last week
performed at the Stewart House
Presentation Day ceremony. From all
accounts they were outstanding in their
singing. It was particularly pleasing to see
the link between our school and Stewart
House developing. Thanks to Ms Lucienne
Howard for her organisation of our
students
Enzo Merriman (Year 7) who won his Solo
for Brass 14 yr and under section in the
Northern Beaches Eisteddfod
Nicole Munnelly (Year 8), who came
second in the Instrumental Championship ‐
Woodwind (15 yrs and under), first in the
Sonata for Woodwind (12 yrs and under),
and second in the Solo for Woodwind (12
yrs and under) at the Northern Beaches
Eisteddfod.
Reece Hodge (Year 10) and Josh Craker
(Year 12) upon their selection to play next
week in the NSWCHS Rugby Carnival in
Year 10 Leadership opportunity
This week all Year 10 students have received a
High Resolves group leader application form. The
High Resolves program is an interactive program
which focuses on citizenship and justice being run
for Year 8 students. Year 10 students with a
particular interest in exploring their leadership
skills are encouraged to apply. The program will be
delivered over two full days – 10 th June and the
30 th of November. Students will be required to
attend a training session. Completed application
forms can be placed in the box in the English
staffroom by 25/5/10.
Year 9 Teen Dental Survey
A survey team consisting of 2 specially trained
Dental Therapists and Dental Assistants (NSW
Health Department) will visit our school on
Thursday 29 th of July, Term 3 to conduct dental
examinations with up to 24 randomly selected
Year 9 students. Yesterday the selected Year 9
students were issued with an envelope with all the
relevant details. Permission to take part in the
program should be returned to NSW Department
of Health, not the school.
Merit Week
Week 5 each term is MERIT WEEK and during this
week students are encouraged to hand in their

BLUE and PINK merit cards for processing.
Students should staple these cards together in
groups of 4 or 8 and place in the designated box
outside the Social Science staffroom. In the next
few weeks there will be Year assemblies and the
credit merits are distributed at these assemblies.
Achievement results are handed out during
pastoral care.
Young Women’s Leadership Seminar
Petra Avramovic and Bronte Richardson were
selected to attend a seminar at State Parliament
house on 13/5/10. Petra’s account is below.
D Rixon
Last Thursday Bronte and I attended the Young
Women’s Leadership Seminar at the Parliament of
New South Wales. We were a part of an
assortment of Year 11 girls from schools all over
the state, all interested in expanding our
understanding of what it means to be a leader.
The Deputy Premier of NSW, Carmel Tebbutt,
addressed us and informed us of the severe issues
that continue to hold women back from gaining
their full potential all supported by a myriad of
universal statistics. We were then invited into a
Leadership Skills workshop presented by the FRANK
team, where we further focused on issues affecting
women and reaching leadership roles and possible
solutions to these problems. We also had a chance
to put our own skills to the test, as well as evaluate
our individual core values and how we can use
these characteristics to further extend ourselves in
our studies, community and careers. The day ended
with a panel of three women Members of
Parliament which included, Angela D’amore,
Gladys Berejiklian and Dawn Fardell. Here we had
an opportunity to openly discuss the problems
facing women in leadership roles as well as what is
required to acquire a high position, to which the
answer most simply is… hard work.
It was a great privilege to be able to attend such a
vital seminar, and to have the opportunity to
discuss the meaning of leadership not only with
successful women but also with other girls our age.
It was an inspiring experience knowing that to
achieve, first you must believe.
Values Education at Manly Selective
Campus
One of the important directions highlighted by our
School Charter, 2009‐2011, is to implement rich
and authentic cross‐curricula initiatives which
encapsulate the school ethos of giving back to the
community.
The goals of these initiatives are for students to:
• Develop empathy for others through
exploring notions of justice
• Understand values, and develop
behaviours, associated with citizenship in a
global context
• Use tools for making ethical decisions
• Become leaders who advocate making a
difference
This year, these notions of “Giving Back”,
“Citizenship”, “Justice” and “Leadership” will be
fundamental to projects involving all students
from Year 7 to Year 9 and some students from Year
10.
Year 7
Educating for Sustainable Futures Project, in
Week 9, Term 2, will see year 7 compare their
experiences with the experiences of children who
are less advantaged than themselves. They will
explore ways in which educational initiatives can
lead to a better future. Students will use critical
and creative thinking skills as a means to explore
better outcomes for children everywhere.
Year 8 and Year 10 Leaders
High Resolves Initiative Program, for Year 8, will
provide opportunity for students to explore
concepts of collective identity and justice. This
program will be presented by the High Resolves
Organization and assisted by Year 10 Student
Leaders and MSC staff.
Year 9
An Ethics program, on September 14 th , will see
year 9 learn about the concept of ethics.
Under the guidance of the St. James Ethics Centre,
in Sydney, MSC staff will present a program which
explores the importance of ethics to citizenship
and leadership. Students will gain knowledge of
ethical decision making tools and practise applying
these to authentic scenarios.

Year 10 subject selection for Year 11
and 12
Subject Selection Evening
15 June, 7pm School Hall
for Parents and Students
Very shortly Year 10 will be selecting subjects for
their senior study. It is important that students
take time to investigate all options thoroughly.
This can be achieved by asking teachers and
students from higher grades, making an
appointment to see Ms Copp as well as thoroughly
reading all material presented at school and
completing individual research. It is important
that you start thinking about this now. Below is an
outline of the process we are following to support
students making an informed and appropriate
choice.
Please contact me if you have any further
questions.
Meg Tulk
BOS Rules:
To qualify for the Higher School Certificate
students must study a pattern of Preliminary and
HSC courses. The Preliminary and HSC patterns
must include:
1. At least 12 units at Preliminary level and at
least 10 units at HSC level.
2. At least 6 units that are Board Developed
Courses.
3. At least 3 courses of 2 unit value or
greater.
4. At least 4 courses.
5. No more than 6 units of courses in Science.
6. 2 units of English.
We are asking each student to make an initial
selection of 5 courses of 2 unit value or
courses that equal 12 units. With this
information I will place the courses into lines
according to the least number of clashes.
Please consider your decision carefully to
avoid disappointment next year. Students at
Manly are not restricted to the courses
available at Manly and may wish to study a
course at another campus in the college or at
TAFE.
In 2011 at Manly we are considering offering
the following courses in addition to English
Advanced. It is not viable for the school to run
all these courses and student choice will
primarily determine which courses will run in
2011. Insufficient numbers may mean that
students will have to study a particular course
at another campus.
Tuesday 25 May 2010
4pm‐7pm
YEAR 7 CORNER
Wraps for Love news: Thank you for the
enthusiastic response from both students and
parents. So far we have 7 completed blankets and
14 squares towards the 8 th , however, we are still in
dire need of donations of 8 ply wool, 4mm needles
(preferably metal and 25cm length). Any
completed 25cm squares, wool or needles can be
brought to Ms O’Donnell’s office, and other year
groups are very welcome to contribute to the
effort.
Homework Reminders:
As well as completing class activities or other tasks
specifically set by the teacher, Year 7 students can
enhance their learning in other valuable ways
during their study time at home (which should be
an average of 1‐1.5 hours per night). These include:
• Working on a “chunk” of an upcoming
assignment (check your term planner or
student planner for when tasks are due).
• Reading over what was achieved in class
for each lesson that day, re‐reading
important aspects of texts/novels.
• Doing extra examples of maths questions
from your textbook, or go to
mathsonline.com
• Proof reading and editing your drafts of
assignments (your parents could help with
this), at least 2 days before they are due.
• Backing up your digital work to your home
computer hard drive and your school
account , on a regular basis eg once a
week.
• Looking at what’s ahead in your
diary/term planner and getting started on
things early eg revising for your Maths
common test.
Remember: there is no such thing as “no
homework”, there is always something you can be
doing to get ahead!!
“There is no doubt that this program has a life changing effect on students…it takes
them from being helpless observers of the world’s problems to being leaders who
have a conviction that they can bring about change.”
What is the High Resolves Ini/a/ve?
The High Resolves Initiative is a fun, interactive and
inspirational experience in which high school students
learn new skills, stretch their minds and meet other
people who are passionate about making a difference
to the world and having their voice heard.
The High Resolves motto our world, our choice sums
up our philosophy that our choices and actions make a
difference in the world.
High Resolves has designed a systematic and progressive approach towards
building citizenship and leadership skills through two core programs:
• Global Citizenship Program (delivered to all students in Year 8)
This program provides a range of activities to motivate students to be
active global citizens and to build skills for communicating across
culture and making fair decisions.
• Global Leadership Program (a two year program across Years 9 and 10
for students who have applied and been selected)
This program builds leadership and project management skills that are
applied and reinforced through hands-‐on projects in their school and
wider community.
systematic, progressive!
curriculum"
global
leadership
program
School Principal
Who runs the High
Resolves Initiative?
High Resolves is a not-‐for-‐profit,
non-‐religious organisation that
has developed this educational
program based on world-‐class
research and material from
multiple reputable educational
sources. Some of the activities
were developed by one of the
co-‐founders of High Resolves at
the Harvard School of
Mediation and Public Policy.
Professionally trained
facilitators from High Resolves
run the program, in the school,
during school time. All of our
Program Managers are
experienced teachers and High
Resolves has a strong emphasis
on keeping up to date with the
latest educational theory and
practice.
High Resolves has partnerships
with the University of Sydney,
University of NSW and
University of Melbourne, and is
supported by National Australia
Bank, Brambles, the Deloitte
Foundation and Alchemy
Growth Partners.

Why par/cipate?
If we are to have a better future, we need to invest in young people by
giving them the opportunity to build leadership skills and mindsets to
enable them to be active participants in our global society and to solve
the many global issues we face.
No matter what profession or occupation a student chooses, they will
benefit from having the skills that High Resolves develops such as
conflict resolution and collaboration, and the ability to lead others to
work together towards a common goal.
Some students have started High Resolves feeling that they couldn’t
really see themselves as a leader. Others have wanted to be a leader, but
never really knew what that would feel like. After participating in the
High Resolves program, most have developed a much deeper, more
personal understanding of what citizenship means to them. Almost all
have walked away with a much greater sense of their place in the world
and have begun a journey to discover what their unique contribution to
their communities and society will be.
At the end of each module in the program, students write a postcard to themselves to capture key personal learnings
from the day. These are sent back to them a few months later as a reminder of what they had learnt. Below are some
examples of postcards written by students.

report outlined the painful facts of the forced removal of thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander children from their families. The day was named “Sorry Day”. Sorry Day enables all
Australians to participate in a journey of healing of these past wrongs.
