Solutions
The creativity of the designer is at the centre of 3D solutions
for the jewellery and watch industry – whether in terms of
the design, the compilation of models for series production
or the processes which enable the printing of completed
jewellery items.
From brainwave to
reality
3D printers are used for the rapid conversion of design ideas into
concrete models – and anyone can use them. There are various
different rapid prototyping systems available on the market, which
make it easier for jewellery designers to access technology.
3D printing is currently one of the biggest technology
trends in the jewellery industry. There is great interest in
the industry surrounding these machines, which can
produce models using CAD data taken direct from a
computer. This process enables the rapid production of
sample components featuring unusual designs without
the use of manual intervention or moulds, where possible.
“Many professionals in the industry have embraced our
technologies to reduce the time and labour required in
manufacturing,” says Avi Reichental, President and ceo
of 3D Systems (4.U, A01). And the selection of systems
available is on the rise, too. Manufacturers of rapid
prototyping technologies have increased their product
ranges significantly. Jewellery designers now have
access to entry-level models which are suited to smaller
applications and lower budgets. 3D printing is developing
into a mass technology. Regardless of their size, all
systems face the same challenges: they must be capable
of supplying micron precision and a high level of resolution
as well as being fast enough to enable designers to
quickly show their designs to the customer and adapt
them where necessary. This also requires software applications
which can be operated intuitively and provide
designers with as much freedom in their work as possible.
01 Highly accurate and finely detailed wax or rubber patterns printed in 3D significantly save time and labour
costs as they shorten the time taken between the initial idea and the perfect piece of jewellery 02 Fully automated
3D printers like the compact Max2 from Solidscape (4.U, C24) allow the production of high-precision wax patterns
ready for casting 03 CAD software especially developed for the needs of jewellery designers like 3Design (4.U,
C10) enable the creative design, live preview, easy alteration and easy direct 3D printing of models and patterns
04 The micron precision and high resolution of modern 3D printers open up new possibilities for jewellery design,
especially in terms of fine structures and filigree patterns as these examples from 3D Systems (4.U, A01) show
Leader in precious metal
brazing pastes
Hilderbrand & Cie SA 4.U / B26
02
In 1972, the company founder
Howard H. Hilderbrand introduced
the first ever brazing
paste to the jewellery and
watch industry.
The brazing paste offers
many advantages. It enables
substantial economy in material,
time and inventory,
but also offered a dramatic
improvement in both the
quality and appearance of
finished products. Nowadays
the industry cannot work
without this paste.
Brazing pastes are a homogenous
mixture of brazing alloy
powder with a binder and, in
certain cases, with a flux,
depending on the heating
technique. The alloy powder
has the function of melting
at the desired temperature,
filling the gap by capillarity,
and assuring the joint’s
strength after solidification.
The binder ensures easy and
consistant dispensing and
decomposes upon heating
without leaving residues. A
flux is added when the parts
to be brazed are heavily oxdised
or when heating is done
in air.
Hilderbrand has also developed
a range of paste
dispensers, from the reliable
and easy-to-use MK3 manual
dispenser to the highly sophisticated
automatic precision
dispenser with temperature
control. The company is able to
satisfy today’s market demands
for precious metal powders for
other applications such as
metal injection moulding or the
press and sinter technology,
especially with the acquisition of
new atomising, classification
and analytical equipment.
A large variety of powders can
be supplied: gold, silver,
platinum, palladium alloys, or
any special request. All the
brazing pastes are made with
the in-house alloy powder, and
everything can be shipped
worldwide in just a few days.
Hilderbrand’s specialists and
their expertise can provide
customers with answers to
any questions. They also offer
training courses adapted to
particular needs. The health
and safety of users of their
brazing pastes is always the
focus of attention. Hilderbrand
is now certified according to
ISO 9001:2008.
Since April 2013, Hilderbrand
has been a C. HAFNER
company. For more than 160
years the C. HAFNER name
has stood for innovative,
trendsetting technologies in
the precious metal sector.
State-of-the-art precious metal
recycling, a wide range of
semi-finished products in all
kinds of alloys and in-depth
knowledge of numerous
applications form the basis of
C. HAFNER’s focus on
high-tech production and
commitment to customer care.
Made-to-measure
LASER Devices
Orotig S.r.l. 4.U / F21
Orotig laser machines are ideal for goldsmiths
and watchmakers, able to deliver sheer
power without damaging metal surfaces hit
by the beam. In the cutting process, the loss
of precious alloy is reduced to a minimum
thanks to a cutting line of 25 microns, with
negligible waste which is almost all entirely
recouped. In the laser world, where technologies
are achieving results worthy of sci-fi,
customer service is also making the
difference today: “The R&D department is
responsible for production of machinery
‘made-to-measure’ for customers,” explains
CEO Alberto Gagliano, who adds: “all of our
machines are the result of on-going feedback
from goldsmiths, because we don’t make just
any old laser: we create machines for the
jewellery industry.” One of the prevalent
demands felt by most jewellery businesses is
definitely to have machines that work without
a continuous operator presence. Solutions
developed by Orotig in
the field of laser marking,
and often personalised
for the customer, make
it possible to obtain
automated drawings,
wording and motifs of
the highest quality,
without the disadvantages
of working by
hand or costly investments
for moulding. “On
the other hand,” adds
Gagliano, “laser marking
is intended to replace
traditional mechanical
punching of precious
metal products. For example, a jewel
made by electroforming has a reduced
thickness that makes it impossible to perform
direct punching, while the so-called ‘secure
marking’ laser allows surface writing without
the slightest damage to the form.”
Nor should we forget laser welding, the real
jewel in the Italian company’s crown: “There
is no redness at the point of welding,”
Gagliano pointed out, “and to see the point
you need a magnifying glass.” Orotig’s
customer portfolio continues to grow and
includes some of the most important
museums in the world, prominent
watchmakers and recently even prestigious
state mints.
Workbenches
Every workshop needs the right solution for every
user – e.g., Allemand Frères (4.U, E35) provides
ergonomic and individually modular workstations in
the form of its Finework brand workbenches.
Welding
Pulse arc welding is an interesting alternative to the
laser. Sunstone (4.U, C40) offers an entire range of
these devices as part of its Orion product range –
from entry-level to high-level technology.
Drills
Technology is continuing to develop – and this includes
drills. The hollow drills in the Busch Twincut
series (4.U, C35), for example, have no internal
toothing. This ensures that no material breaks away.
Polishing
The polishing of master models made from rapid prototype
plastics is an elaborate process. Hatho (4.U,
D55) has therefore developed a complete set of
brushes and pastes to cover all stages of work.
Testing
Watches are subject to numerous stresses in
day-to-day life. Greiner Vibrograf (4.U, F26) has
developed the Leak Checker Prime vacuum testing
device to carry out the required tests.
