<strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Oxnard</strong> <strong>and</strong> Port Hueneme is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to help young<br />

people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible <strong>and</strong><br />

An after-school/holiday program at Club locations.<br />

The Martin V. Smith Youth Center Day Camp Program<br />

The program’s goal is to influence youth by providing school-age<br />

programs that instill a sense <strong>of</strong> confidence, usefulness <strong>and</strong> belonging.<br />

Hours: Opens at 7 a.m.<br />

Days: Seasonal (Summer <strong>and</strong> some holidays. See Day Camp<br />

schedule for specific dates )*<br />

Ages: 6–12<br />

Fee: $85 per week (payment is due first day <strong>of</strong> camp.)<br />

$25 non-refundable deposit required to reserve spot<br />

for week long daycamp.<br />

* Day camp is unavailable when the Club is closed.<br />

The <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> Club does not allow children to sign themselves in or out <strong>of</strong><br />

day camp programs. When anyone other than the routine person is picking<br />

up a child, they will be required to be on the list provided by the parent or<br />

guardian <strong>and</strong> to show photo ID to Club staff before leaving with the child.<br />

Refunds<br />

• Refunds are not given for annual membership fees.<br />

• Refunds for program fees: Available if time given allows the Club<br />

to invite a member to fill the space in that specific program. Please<br />

speak to the program director about refunds (may take up to two<br />

weeks for processing).<br />

• No refunds will be given for daycamp deposits<br />

Sign-In <strong>and</strong> Sign-Out Procedures<br />

• All are welcome to our <strong>Clubs</strong>, however, all youth must sign up<br />

for membership <strong>and</strong> must sign in, in order to participate in club<br />

activities.<br />

• Parent/guardian’s (or members’ signatures) are not required for<br />

members to leave the site.<br />

• Staff members, under normal circumstances, are not allowed to<br />

prohibit a member from leaving the facility.<br />

• Members should not be dropped <strong>of</strong>f prior to the opening <strong>of</strong> any<br />

facility. The Club cannot be held responsible for the supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> the youth during those times.<br />

is not a licensed child care facility. It is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> the member<br />

For your convenience, all programs (Day Camps, After-School, Sports,<br />

Technology, Teen Programs, <strong>and</strong> Special Events) are listed by site. Please note,<br />

days, dates <strong>and</strong> times may vary by location. All programs are free with membership<br />

Drop-in Programs<br />

Drop-in programs consist <strong>of</strong> organized, structured <strong>and</strong> supervised activities<br />

in the areas <strong>of</strong> technology, education <strong>and</strong> athletics in addition to creative opportunities<br />

in our arts room. Drop-in programs are open to all Club members,<br />

no early registration is required. Members simply notify staff in order<br />

Power Hour, ages 6–12<br />

Come participate in our after-school homework<br />

assistance program. Begin to develop good<br />

homework habits, finish assignments with assistance,<br />

<strong>and</strong> be rewarded for your hard work.<br />

Year round, Monday–Thursday,<br />

2–3:30 p.m. & 4–5 p.m.<br />

Torch Club, ages 10–12<br />

torch Club is a small group <strong>of</strong> club members<br />

who have a primary focus on the development<br />

<strong>of</strong> character <strong>and</strong> leadership skills. through participation<br />

in the torch Club program, members<br />

can become caring, competent leaders who<br />

embody the values that are basic to the american<br />

heritage.<br />

Kids Farmers Market, ages 6-12<br />

the Kid’s farmers Marker Program is a h<strong>and</strong>son<br />

approach to improving the long-term diets<br />

<strong>of</strong> our members. Providing nutrition education,<br />

<strong>and</strong> sending fresh produce home so the members<br />

can practice what they learn – fOODShare<br />

the Garden Club from each clubhouse will<br />

meet Once a week at the garden to care for the<br />

patterns. Our garden is environmentally-friendly<br />

<strong>and</strong> will educate <strong>and</strong> inspire our<br />

youth to be good stewards.<br />

Hardy Brain, ages 8–12<br />

Hardy Brain Camp uses metronome training<br />

to permanently train your child’s brain to think<br />

faster <strong>and</strong> process information more easily for<br />

greater success in school.<br />

Goals for Graduation, ages 6–12<br />

Sponsored by the JCPenney afterschool fund,<br />

this program introduces club members to the<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> academic goal-setting. in one-onone<br />

sessions with club pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, members<br />

set achievable “Know-i-Can” goals <strong>and</strong><br />

yearly “Believe-i-Can” goals, <strong>and</strong> then create<br />

action plans. the program provides recognition<br />

for members’ achievements at every step <strong>of</strong><br />

the journey.<br />

September <strong>and</strong> October:<br />

Mondays & Wednesdays,4 -5 p.m.<br />

Cavity Free Zone , ages 6-12<br />

this program will teach members excellent<br />

Dental hygiene s a part <strong>of</strong> their daily lives,<br />

with a solid underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the connection<br />

between good life habits (such as diet) <strong>and</strong><br />

strong, healthy teeth. they will also learn to take<br />

pride in the beauty <strong>and</strong> health <strong>of</strong> their smiles.<br />

September-October:<br />

Tuesdays 4–5 p.m.<br />

TeCHnOLOGY PrOGrAMS<br />

Skills Tutor, ages 6-12<br />

Skills tutor program assesses members from<br />

their knowledge in subject areas <strong>of</strong> math, reading<br />

<strong>and</strong> writing. Members will complete lessons<br />

<strong>and</strong> be tested daily. working with a staff<br />

your member will improve on spelling, division,<br />

addition, comprehension quizzes <strong>and</strong> more at<br />

school.<br />

Year round, Monday-Friday, 2:30-3:30pm<br />

Core Tech, ages 6-18<br />

Core tech prepares our members for high<br />

school <strong>and</strong> future jobs, which will require knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> Micros<strong>of</strong>t Office programs. Children at<br />

our club use the internet everyday; we have a<br />

rigorous internet safety program (netSmartz),<br />

where we teach our children everything they<br />

need to know for safe-responsible internet use.<br />

Year round, Mon.-Thu., 3:30 – 6:00pm<br />

Typing Test, ages 6-18<br />

improve your typing speed. a great program<br />

for children <strong>of</strong> all ages to help with their typing<br />

skills. Using s<strong>of</strong>tware that incorporates<br />

precision along with fun, it is s<strong>of</strong>tware that has<br />

proved to be efficient time after time. even if it<br />

to learn how to not look at the keyboard while<br />

you are typing, or boost the words you type per<br />

minute by 10 words, it can help in many different<br />

ways!<br />

Skill Tech, ages 6-12<br />

Phase I<br />

through three levels <strong>of</strong> animated online lessons<br />

in either english or Spanish <strong>and</strong> instructor-led<br />

group activities, members learn skills in various<br />

Micros<strong>of</strong>t s<strong>of</strong>tware programs, including word,<br />

excel, PowerPoint, access, Publisher <strong>and</strong> Digital<br />

image Pro.<br />

Phase II<br />

Participants learn about hardware identification<br />

<strong>and</strong> installation, networking <strong>and</strong> technologyrelated<br />

careers.<br />

Digital Arts Festivals, ages 6-18<br />

Movie tech, Music tech, Photo tech, web tech<br />

<strong>and</strong> Design tech<br />

Photo Tech<br />

Members take digital photos, explore the effects<br />

<strong>of</strong> distance <strong>and</strong> angle, <strong>and</strong> learn about photo<br />

composition. They are trained in digital photo<br />

manipulation, from basic editing like cropping<br />

<strong>and</strong> adjusting color <strong>and</strong> light, to advanced projects<br />

that call for image filters <strong>and</strong> layering, as in<br />

creating CD cover art or photographic hoaxes.<br />

Music Tech<br />

Members explore a variety <strong>of</strong> digital music s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

applications <strong>and</strong> basic music theory. They<br />

learn to write sheet music, mix musical loops,<br />

<strong>and</strong> compose <strong>and</strong> record original songs.<br />

Movie Tech<br />

Lights….Camera…Action! Be the director <strong>and</strong><br />

editor <strong>of</strong> your own movie! You will be able to<br />

edit the movie on the computer, then have a<br />

chance to win a national contest! Let’s see if you<br />

are Hollywood material!<br />

Web Tech<br />

Web Tech introduces members to the principles<br />

<strong>and</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> Web design <strong>and</strong> development.<br />

Members begin by creating simple, onepage<br />

sites with text <strong>and</strong> images, <strong>and</strong> advance<br />

to building more robust sites with page links,<br />

graphics, text <strong>and</strong> sound. Along the way, they<br />

learn important design lessons about page layout,<br />

color choice <strong>and</strong> graphic weight.<br />

Design Tech<br />

Members learn to create large editing object<br />

like magazine covers <strong>and</strong> posters. Using the<br />

tools on the computer they can enhance projects,<br />

add photo objects <strong>and</strong> other design.<br />

Robo Tech<br />

Using Lego Mindstorms ® – a self-contained kit<br />

that provides an introduction to robotics – members,<br />

working in groups, use the kits <strong>and</strong> tutorials<br />

to build <strong>and</strong> program a robot that interacts<br />

with its environment in numerous ways.<br />

Game Tech<br />

Working both digitally <strong>and</strong> non-digitally, members<br />

learn to animate a character <strong>and</strong> begin the<br />

process to design their own video game.<br />

September - March, Tuesdays & Thursdays,<br />

Music Video Programming, ages 6-12<br />

ever wanted to make a music video like Justin<br />

Bieber, Miley Cyrus, <strong>and</strong> One Direction? now<br />

is your chance to learn how to make a music<br />

video <strong>and</strong> even be in the video! Members can<br />

take part in video production <strong>and</strong> editing in<br />

this program.<br />

Year round, Mon.-Thu., 3:30 – 6:00pm<br />

Speech 101, ages 6-12<br />

learn how CeOs <strong>and</strong> executives run their meetings.<br />

this program will help kids with public<br />

speaking <strong>and</strong> a great way to build confidence<br />

<strong>and</strong> self- esteem. the kids will learn to make<br />

a PowerPoint slide presentation on the topics<br />

given <strong>and</strong> they will present that to an audience.<br />

Year round, Mon.-Thu., 3:30 – 6:00pm<br />

Creative Writing, ages 6-12<br />

this program will cover basic writing skills on<br />

the computer. Members participating will have<br />

a chance to type out their thoughts creatively<br />

<strong>and</strong> maybe someday want to publish their<br />

dreams. learn to write the next Hunger Games<br />

or Harry Potter Series here!<br />

Math Skills Practice, ages 6-12<br />

the technology world is full <strong>of</strong> logical practice<br />

<strong>and</strong> mathematics is one <strong>of</strong> the foundations <strong>of</strong><br />

logical sense. therefore math <strong>and</strong> technology<br />

go logically together. this program will help<br />

kids on their math skills in the computer lab.<br />

there will be computer s<strong>of</strong>tware that will help<br />

them learn <strong>and</strong> grow logically.<br />

activities enhance each child’s self-worth<br />

<strong>and</strong> encourage underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> respect<br />

across cultures.<br />

November <strong>and</strong> December: Mondays &<br />

Wednesdays, 4–5 p.m.<br />

SMART Kids, ages 6–9<br />

SMart Moves is a primary prevention program<br />

for youth ages 6 to 9. it is designed to<br />

help youth identify <strong>and</strong> resist peer, social <strong>and</strong><br />

media pressures that promote high-risk behaviors.<br />

the SMart Kids program teaches members<br />

that their bodies are irreplaceable “million<br />

dollar machines” that allow them to accomplish<br />

their dreams.<br />

January only: Tuesdays & Thursdays,<br />

4–5 p.m.<br />

SMART Moves – Start SMART,<br />

ages 9–12<br />

a resistance skills program for members ages 9<br />

to 12 that focuses on ways to identify <strong>and</strong> resist<br />

peer, social <strong>and</strong> media pressures to use alcohol,<br />

tobacco <strong>and</strong> other drugs or become sexually<br />

involved. it includes age-appropriate discussions<br />

<strong>of</strong> puberty <strong>and</strong> friendships.<br />

Dragon Fly Quest, ages 6–12<br />

the objectives <strong>of</strong> this program are to involve<br />

members in the creative process <strong>of</strong> science, <strong>and</strong><br />

to help members see how science relates<br />

National Fine Arts, ages 6-12<br />

Members will examine the many types <strong>of</strong> art<br />

expression available to them <strong>and</strong> prepare for<br />

displayed. they will receive additional recognition<br />

if their work is selected for judging.<br />

this is a special initiative that targets young<br />

school. Club staff <strong>and</strong> volunteer mentors are<br />

trained to use strength-based strategies <strong>and</strong><br />

problem solving techniques through strong<br />

relationships to support young people at risk<br />

for future school failure.<br />

Good Grief Club ages 6-12<br />

Offered by the Camarillo hospice, this group<br />

helps youth dealing with the loss <strong>of</strong> a loved one.<br />

Manners “ R” essential<br />

in this fun <strong>and</strong> exciting class, we will work on<br />

manners <strong>and</strong> etiquette. You will learn skills such<br />

as place settings, table manners , social graces,<br />

<strong>and</strong> defining your self image.<br />

participate in the outdoor events members<br />

instruct them in survival skills, how to tie<br />

The <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Oxnard</strong> & Port Hueneme areas <strong>of</strong>fers a wide array <strong>of</strong> volunteer opportunities. Whether you have one hour to give<br />

or one year to dedicate, we would love to have you make a difference in our members’ lives. For further information regarding our Volunteer Program<br />

Coaches <strong>and</strong> Officials<br />

Sports <strong>and</strong> recreational activities are proven to keep kids in good<br />

physical shape, help social interaction, boost energy, keep them out<br />

<strong>of</strong> trouble, <strong>and</strong> encourage discipline <strong>and</strong> sportsmanship. You can<br />

help make sure that every child in our community has a chance to<br />

participate in these great activities. We need coaches <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />

for cheerleading, dance, flag football, basketball, baseball, volleyball,<br />

boxing, weight training, soccer <strong>and</strong> track. Practices are held weeknights<br />

<strong>and</strong> game days are held on Saturdays.<br />

Guest Speakers<br />

We always welcome guest speakers who can address issues <strong>of</strong> interest<br />

<strong>and</strong> importance to our members, especially in subjects such as college<br />

preparation, drug prevention, resume writing, job pr<strong>of</strong>essions, etc.<br />

If you have an area <strong>of</strong> expertise that you are eager to impart to our<br />

membership, we’d love to hear from you!<br />

Homework Tutor<br />

Every afternoon, when the kids start pouring into the Club after<br />

school, we have “Power Hour.” This is the time, in which members<br />

can get their homework done before they engage in our enrichment<br />

programs. We need volunteers to assist our members with homework<br />

as well as additional educational skills. Tutors are needed at all three<br />

club sites, as well as, at our after school programs in El Rio <strong>and</strong> Ocean<br />

View year round. We ask tutors to dedicate a minimum <strong>of</strong> 1 hour<br />

between 2 <strong>and</strong> 6 p.m. weekdays.<br />

Workshop Leader<br />

Do you have a special skill? Scrap booking, perhaps? Art? Music?<br />

Dance? We welcome the opportunity to broaden our Club members’<br />

horizons in a broad spectrum <strong>of</strong> areas. Please feel free to contact our<br />

director <strong>of</strong> volunteer services!<br />

Leadership Advisors<br />

The <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> Club promotes citizenship within the many arenas<br />

we expose our members to. Youth who underst<strong>and</strong> citizenship will<br />

take part in their communities throughout their lives. We need<br />

volunteers to advise members in our Torch or Keystone leadership<br />

clubs that expose youth to good citizenship through teaching the<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> democracy, planning events, team work, <strong>and</strong> the value <strong>of</strong><br />

community service. Volunteers must be over 24 years old <strong>and</strong> make a<br />

one-year commitment to the group they facilitate. Time commitment<br />

is 4-10 hours per month.<br />

Sailing Program<br />

The club is seeking ASA or US sailing certified instructors to help lead<br />

our new youth sailing program. The ideal c<strong>and</strong>idates will share a love<br />

for water <strong>and</strong> a passion for working with children. We are also looking<br />

for program aides to assist in monitoring children during instruction.<br />

Children range from ages 10–18 years old.<br />

Fundraising<br />

Volunteers in this arena work on special events <strong>and</strong> fundraising for<br />

the club. Time is flexible <strong>and</strong> is usually evenings <strong>and</strong> weekends. There<br />

are monthly meetings to coordinate efforts <strong>and</strong> you control how much<br />

time you spend by what you sign up for. Options include: annual<br />

auction, community events, golf tournament, special events, <strong>and</strong><br />

grant writing.<br />

Internships<br />

BGCOP <strong>of</strong>fers undergraduate <strong>and</strong> graduate-level internships at our<br />

three main clubhouses. Interns will be eligible for academic credit,<br />

however internships are unpaid. Interns are expected to complete a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> 60 hours during their tenure. Opportunities are available<br />

in our various departments including: Education, Marketing,<br />

Resource Development, Technology, Athletics, <strong>and</strong> Programming.<br />

Applicants must provide a Resume <strong>and</strong> undergo equal guidelines as<br />

volunteers. Placements are made on a rolling basis throughout the year<br />

subject to availability <strong>and</strong> need.<br />

Maintenance<br />

Our clubs are used by over 200 to 300 youth DAILY <strong>and</strong> our<br />

equipment <strong>and</strong> facilities get extreme use by active kids. If you have<br />

a skill or an interest in this area, we would greatly appreciate help<br />

with construction, painting, grounds keeping, l<strong>and</strong>scaping, <strong>and</strong> van<br />

repair. Volunteering your time reduces our cost <strong>and</strong> allows us to utilize<br />

funding for youth programs <strong>and</strong> activities.<br />

Specialized Programs Volunteers<br />

RAMP (Re-Entry Aftercare Mentoring Program)<br />

The club is seeking volunteer mentors for our RAMP program. This is<br />

a Targeted Re-entry Aftercare Mentoring Program which will provide<br />

mentoring to incarcerated teens in the Juvenile Justice Facility. The<br />

purpose is to provide them with the necessary resources <strong>and</strong> tools<br />

to prepare them to re-enter the community <strong>and</strong> avoid committing<br />

further crimes. The 20 hour mentor training is tentatively scheduled<br />

for March. Desirable c<strong>and</strong>idates would have an interest in working<br />

with young <strong>of</strong>fenders <strong>and</strong> a desire to make a positive difference in the<br />

lives <strong>of</strong> young people. Volunteers must be 21 years <strong>of</strong> age or older, able<br />

to make a 1 year commitment <strong>of</strong> at least 2 hours a week, <strong>and</strong> complete<br />

a criminal background check. Mentors will work with youth inside the<br />

facility as well as in the community once they are released.<br />

Be Great: Graduate Mentors<br />

BE GREAT: Graduate is an initiative that targets young people most<br />

vulnerable for dropping out <strong>of</strong> school. Mentors are asked to work with<br />

Youth, ages 6-18, who show signs that they could be at risk for dropping<br />

out <strong>of</strong> school. With a goal <strong>of</strong> A long-term mentoring relationship that<br />

is built on trust <strong>and</strong> open communication, with the goal <strong>of</strong> building the<br />

member’s belief that “they can, they want to <strong>and</strong> they belong.” Mentors<br />

must be at least 21 years <strong>of</strong> age with the willingness to mentor a youth<br />

in <strong>Oxnard</strong> or Port Hueneme with a minimum <strong>of</strong> 3 year commitment.<br />

Counselor in Training (CIT)<br />

This new <strong>and</strong> exciting summer volunteer leadership program is for<br />

teens ages 14-18 years old interested in learning skills to become a camp<br />

counselor, youth development pr<strong>of</strong>essional, <strong>and</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> other<br />

child care related jobs. CIT’s must complete a program application,<br />

interview for the position, attend a CIT training, partake in weekly<br />

evaluation, <strong>and</strong> agree to a 3 week summer commitment. Recruitment<br />

process begins yearly in May.<br />

need your help to provide a safe <strong>and</strong> positive Day For Kids for our young Community. We<br />

are looking for volunteers to engage with the youth, assist with games, stage set up, face<br />

painting <strong>and</strong> much more!<br />

October <strong>2013</strong><br />

10/11 Year <strong>of</strong> the Volunteer; Recognition Party–In appreciation <strong>of</strong> our hardworking<br />

volunteers we will have a party to celebrate the wonderful people who have volunteered with<br />

us <strong>and</strong> continue to do so.<br />

10/26 National Make A Difference Day <strong>of</strong> Service–Each October millions <strong>of</strong> volunteers<br />

around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives <strong>of</strong> others. Make A<br />

Difference Day is a day to celebrate the power <strong>of</strong> people to use their time, talent, voice <strong>and</strong><br />

money to create change. Teens from our Teen Center will volunteer with the Rotary Club <strong>of</strong><br />

Santa Paula <strong>and</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> California Hansen Agricultural Center at Falkner Farm.<br />

November <strong>2013</strong><br />

11/5 Be <strong>of</strong> Service–Our Teen Volunteer Group will be <strong>of</strong> service to the local Rescue<br />

Mission Alliance that brings assistance to thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> people a day.<br />

11/23 Family Volunteer Day–Family Volunteer Day is a day <strong>of</strong> service that demonstrates<br />

<strong>and</strong> celebrates the power <strong>of</strong> families who volunteer together, supporting their neighborhoods,<br />

<strong>and</strong> communities <strong>and</strong> the world. The Teens from our Teen Center will be accompanied by<br />

their family on our venture to help clean up a state park in collaboration with The Friends <strong>of</strong><br />

California State Parks in Ventura County.<br />

1/11 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day <strong>of</strong> Service–On the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day <strong>of</strong><br />

Service millions <strong>of</strong> Americans honor the memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. King by contributing their time,<br />

voice <strong>and</strong> money to improve their communities. In Honor <strong>of</strong> MLK day which falls on 1/20<br />

the Teen Volunteers will volunteer at FOOD Share <strong>of</strong> Ventura County that feeds over<br />

74,500 people per month in Ventura County.<br />

February <strong>2014</strong><br />

1/8 Take Flight <strong>and</strong> Volunteer–Our Teen volunteer group will take a trip to the Ojai<br />

Raptor Center to meet the all-volunteer staff, assist in painting Owl houses, <strong>and</strong> clean cages.<br />

The volunteers will also learn about the Ojai Raptor Centers’ clientele; injured or orphaned<br />

birds from all over Ventura, Santa Barbara, <strong>and</strong> Los Angeles counties <strong>and</strong> how they assess<br />

them for injuries <strong>and</strong> illnesses, rehabilitate them, <strong>and</strong> release them back into nature.<br />
