In the morning of March 17, Kars Airport<br />
was full of action, probably like never<br />
before. Airplanes landing one after another<br />
were carrying the presidents, ministers,<br />
businessmen and journalists from Turkey,<br />
Azerbaijan and Georgia who were going to<br />
witness this historic day. Meanwhile, Kars<br />
was beautified like a bride, representing the<br />
unique hospitality of the East. When the<br />
first pipe of TANAP is placed in the trench<br />
by three presidents, the first big step is<br />
taken for the transportation of the gas<br />
obtained from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz II<br />
field. So with the excitement and honor of<br />
such a day, everybody gathered in TANAP’s<br />
construction area in the Selim district.<br />
Three presidents placed the first pipe of the<br />
1850 km long TANAP project with these<br />
feelings.<br />
TANAP: THE PEACE PROJECT OF EURASIA<br />
So, what does TANAP the construction<br />
works of which started with this glorious<br />
groundbreaking ceremony, mean for Turkey<br />
and Azerbaijan as well as for Eurasia and<br />
even the whole world? As the project that<br />
will receive Azerbaijan gas from South<br />
Caucasus Pipeline (SCP) and deliver it to<br />
Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), why is<br />
TANAP the most important part of the<br />
Southern Gas Corridor consisting of these<br />
three pipelines? The answer is: TANAP not<br />
only offers economic advantages but also<br />
makes great contribution to regional peace.<br />
This project is probably the only project<br />
that can smoothly deliver the rich resources<br />
of the East to the West. President of<br />
Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev says, “A new and<br />
serious alliance is being formed in Eurasia.<br />
The political and economic impact of it will<br />
be great. The new gas basin is now<br />
Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz field.” Azerbaijan’s<br />
proven natural gas reserves are around 3.35<br />
trillion cubic meters and 1.4 trillion cubic<br />
meters of it is located in Shah Deniz which<br />
is a part of the Caspian Sea. That’s why<br />
Aliyev underlined the significance of the<br />
Shah Deniz field. In the first phase, Shah<br />
Deniz is the primary source of the Southern<br />
Gas Corridor which connects the East to the<br />
West.<br />
Similarly, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan<br />
comments on this project from the Eurasia<br />
perspective by saying, “When we complete<br />
all the stages of the unique Southern Gas<br />
Corridor project, we will have established a<br />
strong bond between Europe and the<br />
Caspian Region. Europe needs this project<br />
