About SAM
Guests viewing Free Form Avaricious is a Precious Blessing by Chusak Srikwan at the exhibition opening of Thai Transience.
The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) focuses on the creation of art in the present moment. It advocates
and presents the contemporary art practices of Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia, situating them
within the global context of art making today. Opened in January 1996 as a museum under the
National Heritage Board of Singapore, SAM has built up one of the most important collections of
contemporary art from the region, and its programming aims to introduce new artistic practices
and styles to the public, as well as nurturing discerning audiences for contemporary art. Through
strategic alliances with international arts and cultural institutions, SAM facilitates visual arts education,
exchange, research and development within the region and internationally. SAM is also the organiser
of the Singapore Biennale 2013 and the past edition in 2011.
Director’s Message
A happy new year to one and all! At the start
of the year, I would like to offer a personal note
of thanks to everyone who has supported
the museum’s programmes in the past year.
Thanks to each and every one of you, SAM
has successfully re-invented itself as the
museum of contemporary art. In this new
incarnation, SAM shrugs off the past to focus
on the creation and interpretation of art in the
present moment.
We open the year with a bang, with our
eagerly anticipated and highly iconic shows: President’s Young Talents and The Collectors Show:
Weight of History.
Returning for its fifth edition, President’s Young Talents is our signature exhibition of new commissions
featuring some of the most exciting young artists under 35. This year, we feature new projects from
Boo Junfeng, Liao Jiekai, Zaki Razak, Grace Tan, Ryf Zaini and Robert Zhao.
A favourite of both audiences and critics, this year’s The Collectors Show will seduce you with an
exclusive glimpse at the compelling and astounding art pieces found in private collections from
around the world. It demonstrates the unique perspective that museums and museum curators bring
to contemporary art in a direct, accessible way – through our choices of artworks to exhibit, and
how we recast individual works into a collective museum exhibition. Featuring more than 20 large
scale works, this year’s exhibition, titled Weight of History, is a showcase of how artists perceive and
re-conceive the multi-faceted history of the Asia-Pacific region.
A new Appreciating Art Lecture Series will be held in conjunction with The Collectors Show:
Weight of History. This year’s series ventures beyond Southeast Asia to present the emergence of
contemporary art in China, South Asia and the Middle East, with intriguing discussions exploring
how the region’s rising affluence impacts the contemporary art market.
The third edition of the Southeast Asian Film Festival returns this March, promising to be a space
not just for intellectual sharing, but one for art and film friendships to form. We warmly invite visitors
to experience the best works of moving image the region has to offer, and to share in the beauty
and versatility of the visual medium as they address the many core issues faced in Southeast Asia.
There will also be a chance to get up close and personal with the directors and veteran film makers
during these screening sessions, so be sure to reserve a place and hear what they have to say about
their films.
Finally, come celebrate the festivities of the season and experience the wonders, depth and variety of
contemporary art at SAM during our New Year and Chinese New Year Open Houses.
We welcome you to SAM, the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Credit Suisse: Innovation In Art Series
President’s Young Talents
25 January 2013 to 15 September 2013
SAM
Inaugurated by SAM in 2001, the President’s Young Talents is Singapore’s premier commissioning
exhibition, featuring the island’s most promising artists under the age of 35. Selected by an
independent curatorial committee of local art professionals, these artists are mentored through
the entire process of art creation, from concept development to exhibition realisation. This year’s
exhibition features new commissions from Boo Junfeng, Liao Jiekai, Zaki Razak, Grace Tan, Ryf
Zaini and Robert Zhao.
Presenting Sponsor
Boo Junfeng
Trained in film schools in Singapore and Spain, Boo Junfeng is one of Singapore’s most prolific
young filmmakers whose works often centre on themes of alienation, kinship, love and sexuality.
His short films, as well as his segment in the omnibus feature film, Lucky7, have won him acclaim
internationally. Boo’s debut feature film, Sandcastle, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival’s
International Critics’ Week in 2010, garnered several awards from film festivals around the world,
and was listed by The Wall Street Journal as one of Asia’s most notable films that year.
Liao Jiekai
Liao Jiekai graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is a Singapore-based
filmmaker and artist. He is a founding member of film collective 13 Little Pictures, and has directed
several short films. In 2010, his debut feature film Red Dragonflies – an exploration of people, places
and time – won him critical acclaim at various international film festivals. Liao has also collaborated
with artists on projects like Don’t Sit On Me (with Cheo Chai Hiang), and The Flying Method of an
Artist with a Fear of Flying (with Nedko Solakov) at the Singapore Biennale 2011.
Zaki Razak
Zaki Razak graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts with a Masters in Fine Art. He has a
background in graphic design and street art. Zaki’s work also involves curatorial practice and his
recent projects investigate human consciousness and the reception and interpretation of art. Often
employing wordplay, Zaki’s work takes advantage of everyday situations or events, allowing his
audience to encounter or participate in the process of art-making, thereby provoking debate about
art, its institutions and modes of creation, transmission and reception.
Grace Tan
Grace Tan is a multi-disciplinary practitioner whose experiments often blur the lines between design,
art, and mathematics. Formally trained in fashion design, Tan began her art and design practice in
2003 under the auspices of kwodrent – a creative platform which she founded. Initially based on
the study of rectangles, materials and construction methods, her works have since evolved from
wearable fabric pieces into more complex, site specific installations and spatial constructs.
Ryf Zaini
Ryf Zaini graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Media Arts, and also holds a double
diploma in Engineering and Media Arts. Ryf’s artistic development and practice stem from his interest
in how technology shapes society. Since 2006, Ryf has been progressively creating interactive works
with electronic components, which encourage audiences to reconsider social issues and norms – in
particular the potential repercussions of our reliance on technology.
Robert Zhao Renhui
Robert Zhao Renhui received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Photography from Camberwell
College of Arts and the London College of Communication respectively. His work addresses man’s
relationship with nature, and related issues of morality and ethics, paying close attention to how
our attitudes and opinions shape our assumptions about the natural world. Zhao works mainly in
photography, but often adopts a multi-disciplinary approach by presenting images together with
documents and objects. He does this to test the principles behind the dissemination of knowledge
and to challenge the ways in which we commonly receive and accept information.
Artist Workshop: Grace Tan
A multi-disciplinary practitioner specialising in wearable art and spatial structures, Grace Tan’s
experiments often blur the lines between design, art and mathematics. This workshop with Tan
explores the transformation of two-dimensional surfaces to 3D ‘structures’ through various methods
of cutting, folding and crushing.
The Collectors Show is one of the most anticipated shows on the arts calendar and continues to
present compelling contemporary artworks from private collections in Asia. Defying conventional
expectations of private art collections as being merely showpieces to be hung on walls, this edition
features a spectrum of more than 20 works that show how artists perceive, and re-conceive the
multiple facets of history in the Asia-Pacific region.
Curated and independently organised by SAM, Weight of History examines how artists engage
with, and evaluate, local traditions and culture, translating them into masterpieces which display the
interconnected relationship between past and present in our increasingly globalised societies.
Laocoön and His Sons, an influential artwork from 2 nd century BCE. With quotes from writers such as
Chinua Achebe and Shirley Lim, Leow explores our often fraught relationship and struggle with the
English language, mirroring Laocoön’s struggle with the encroaching snakes to our latent discomfort
with the words we speak and write.
Seeing the Kite Again Series II
Runs through 5 May 2013
SAM
Seeing the Kite Again is inspired by the late master Wu Guanzhong’s metaphor of a kite and how
it expresses the connection between an artist, his life and the people around him. By bridging
Chinese and Western aesthetics, Wu blazed the trail for the modernisation of Chinese art. In 2008,
the internationally acclaimed artist donated his largest gift of 113 important works to the National
Heritage Board. Selected paintings from the donation have been presented by the National Art
Gallery, Singapore, since 2009. The current exhibition showcases some of Wu’s most outstanding
works produced from 1960s to 2000s in the oil and ink medium.
Support SAM
Singaporean artist Robert Zhao introducing his performance to the guests at
the opening of The Singapore Show: Future Proof exhibition.
The current trends in contemporary
art have gravitated towards
Asia, making this an exciting and
opportune time for organisations
and individuals to forge long-term
funding partnerships with the
Singapore Art Museum (SAM). As
a partner, your contribution will go
towards supporting exhibitions, as
well as education and community
engagement programmes.
In particular, the Singapore Artists’
Fund is a new SAM initiative
dedicated to supporting artists
whose practice is strongly rooted
in Singapore. One of the biggest
challenges facing artists in Singapore is the lack of local philanthropic support for the arts. This may
result in loss of talents, and inhibit the growth of a culturally vibrant local arts scene nurtured by
its people.
Donations will go towards commissioning and exhibiting these artists’ works over the next five years,
via exhibition series such as The Singapore Show: Future Proof, and President’s Young Talents,
among others. Our initial goal is to raise SGD$500,000 for this fund. To date, we have received a
commitment of SGD$250,000.
Depending on the amount donated, eligible donors will be acknowledged for their contributions
through exhibition-related publicity and advertising, as well as nominated for the annual national
Patron of Heritage Award. Other benefits may include the exclusive use of the SAM Glass Hall and
complimentary SAM passes for donors and their guests. In addition, all cash donations are eligible
for 2.5 times tax deduction, subject to terms and conditions stipulated by IRAS, or as per the year.
For more information, please email Candice_LI@nhb.gov.sg or call 6332 6854.
Heritage Gala
The Heritage Gala is a fundraising platform for Singapore’s national
museums. Inaugurated in 2008, the third Heritage Gala will be held on
15 March 2013. Aptly themed Legacies, funds raised will go towards
preserving our art for future generations.
Fri, 15 Mar | 6:30pm | The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
Please support SAM by purchasing a table for this fundraising dinner, priced at $10,000
and $20,000 per table. For more information please contact Devi at 6332 2314 or email
