ABOUT US 

Namiba® Terra has been established on the 

terraristic market since 1996 and stands for 

biotope- and animal-friendly terraristic supplies. 

In an area of over 3,000 square meters we keep 

about 850 different individual items and trade 

goods for pet dealers, with nearly all the electrical 

items such as lamps coming from quality 

European manufacturing. In addition, we import 

natural products from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, 

Namibia, Chile, Ecuador and Brazil, and have 

some plastic products manufactured in U.S.A. and 

China.

We appreciate pet shops’ consumer advice and 

therefore only supply pet shops and pet retailers 

with a certification of competence or qualification 

under § 11 of the Animal Welfare Act.

We offer an extensive assortment of very natural 

terrariumproducts and by following our slogan „On 

the trace of nature“ we give the possibility 

to the hobbyist to ensure its animals the 

optimum care. Recognizing and 

understanding the natural biotopes is the basis of 

our product development. 

By implementing some crucial insight we have 

gained by observing reptiles and amphibians 

within their natural habitats, we would like to 

provide the hobbyist with the possibility of creating 

optimal and appropriate living conditions for their 

animals depending on the specific needs. We are 

able to incorporate important experience and 

newly acquired knowledge directly into the 

development of products by also actively 

exchanging information with renowned reptile 

breeders and owners

OUR NATURAL PRODUCTS AND THEIR ORIGIN 

Namiba Terra® – Nature-compatible use of the 

rain forest - Lianas from South america 

Lianas from South America: According to latest 

findings, the increasing concentration of CO2 in the 

atmosphere caused by the emissions of greenhouse 

gases from industrial countries is leading to 

alterations in tropical rainforest vegetation in South 

America. In recent years an increase in the growth 

of parasitic plants, of which lianas are an example, 

has been recorded at a scale of up to 4.6% per year 

compared to tropical trees that are reaching full 

growth. The danger here is that tropical trees will be 

overgrown and suffocated by the lianas in the long 

term. 

Namiba Terra works together with the indigenous 

communities (Jungle Indians), who, with permission 

from the Department of the Environment of Ecuador, 

target lianas in the jungle and remove them, thus 

contributing to the preservation of the rainforest. 

Thanks to this co-operation we get handpicked 

lianas and can be sure that they are not waste 

products from the partially illegal deforestation of the 

rainforests. The Jungle Indians can rely on an 

additional income in return and contribute thereby to 

the preservation of their living space. 

Namiba Terra® – Use of regenerating natural raw materials 

Coconut products from Sri Lanka: All Namiba Terra 

coconut products originate from the heart of Sri 

Lanka and are thus free from salt, which is always 

present in products from seashore areas. By using 

renewable primary products from coconut palms, 

various commodities for terraristics can be 

produced, such as for example substrates, fibre 

back walls and hiding cavities. 

The packaging of the products is carried out onsite 

in small factories, which manufacture exclusively for 

the terraristics field, so there is no chance of soil 

substrates mixing with different, fertilized substrates 

for gardening sector. 

The brands CocoBrick®, ChipBrick®, 

CocoBale®, ChipBale®, CocoBasket® and 

CocoChip® vouch for over one decade for the 

continuously good quality of all Namiba® Terra Coir 

fibre products, because we co-operate always with 

the same producer in Sri Lanka, who 

guarantees for selected raw materials.

Namiba Terra® – We have knowledge 

Certificate of competence: We moreover support 

specialised trade and the dedicated terraristics 

worker with training courses, seminars and examinations 

on the basis of the certificate of competence 

of the VDA (Federation of German associations 

for aquarium and terrarium 

activity)/DGHT (German society for herpetology 

and terraristics), and also with qualification in 

accordance with §11 of the Animal Protection 

Law. The Namiba Terra GmbH works together 

with the VDA/DGHT training centre of 

Kempen/Rheinberg to offer training courses and 

examinations with qualification in accordance 

with § 11 of the Animal Protection Law. You can

One organiser of the training courses is the managing 

director of Namiba Terra GmbH, Lutz Weynans, who 

is Expert Knowledge Co-ordinator and Specialist 

Lecture Head of the DGHT, as well as first chairman 

of the examinations board for the area of specialist 

live animal trade of the Chamber of Industry and 

Commerce of the Central Lower Rhine region. 

He is equally supported in this by the DGHT 

Specialist Lecture Head Friedrich Wilhelm Henkel, 

who is National Committee Chairman of the DGHT as 

well as a well-known specialist textbook author and a 

veterinary surgeon of the local government. 

The specialist training courses and examinations with 

qualification in accordance with § 11 of the Animal 

Protection Law are now recognised nationwide. 

(The acknowledgement process based on the recommendation of the Federal Republic Länder's "Expert Knowledge" working committee - established on 24.01.2007 - and 

equally, that of the equivalence acknowledgment of the Competence Examination made by the VDA/DGHT federations for the specialist area of terraristics in accordance with § 

11 of the Animal Protection Law, is final as of December 2007. The VDA/DGHT federations' specialist training courses followed by an examination are to be recognised as being 

equivalent to an expert discussion at the responsible authority (§ 11 paraph 2 of Animal Protection Law in connection with No. 12.2.2.4 sentence 2 of the AVV - Animal Protection

Based on the latest scientific research reptiles not only 

require UVB and UVA light, but also radiant heat 

(infra-red light), necessary for the optimal metabolic

have been developed especially for big terrariums with

ballasts (CrystalSun® EVG) with an appropriate wattage are absolutely necessary for the operation of this lamp. 

Replux® UV Plus D3 

Compact lamps 

Replux® UV-Plus D3 compact lamps promotes Vitamin D3 

production by its high level of UVA (30%) and UVB (8%) 

radiation. They thereby provides radiation and promotes 

health, growth and well-being of all reptiles. Problems can 

be prevented by all day use in the Terrarium, with a distance 

of approximately 25 - 40cm from the animal. This illumination 

is especially suitable for medium-sized terrariums which 

do not allow the installation of fluorescent tubes. The power 

supply unit is integrated into the base so it will be possible 

to run it with the E27 lamp chamfering (for example the 

ceramic version set Item-Nr. 1879 or 1884). 

They are extroardinarily well-suited as heat sources for 

smaller terrariums when combined with Namiba® and

Biostat® thermostats measure the temperature in the Terrarium with their sensor 

precisely, regulate the warmth of heating mats or heating cables, and give in case 

of overheating immediately alarm by a signal light. 

Biostat® Thermostat Night & Day 1000 measures the 

temperature in the terrarium and activates the 

connected heating mat, the heat cable or the heat rock

Namiba® Terra Terrariumsand, - red and orange - ideal for desert dwelling 

animals. The striking decorative colour of this sand offer a natural environment, 

especially to bigger reptiles such as Frilled Lizards, Bearded Dragons and Monitors. 

The red terrarium sand is poured into the terrarium in a moist condition and should 

be allowed to dry before reptiles are placed onto it. During the drying process the 

sand will become hard to enable reptiles to dig tunnels and caves. Therefore the 

sand should have a minimum of 10cm depth.

– Terrariumbedding 

Namiba® Gravel – Terrarium litter is a fossil sediment consisting of a natural diatom/clay 

mixture. It is an outstanding hygiene litter and round granular terrarium 

substrate for many reptile species whose natural habitat is the veldt, savannah or 

desert and absorbs reptile excretions. It has been heat sterilized at 700 degrees 

Celsius and is characterised by its high liquid absorption capacity. This substrate 

can be re-used several times after being washed in hot water. The granulate 

should be dampened at regular intervals with a water sprayer to avoid dust 

development and to appropriate increase the relative humidity level within 

the terrarium in dry terraria. The unique granularity of this substrate is especially 

well suited for most types of tortoises, agama, monitor lizards, iguanas from arid

Terra-Puzzle ® modelling clay is a natural clay that is used to create a natural background on the terrarium’s 

back wall. In its wet state, it can be applied onto a fixed fabric that has previously been glued to the wall. This 

process allows various decoration materials such as thin clay tiles, stone slabs, roots, branches and succulent 

terrarium plants to be integrated into the design. After curing, the consistency of the surface increasingly 

hardens with subsequent spraying with a water mist. But this must not result in erosion that could lead to 

the softening of the back wall. Cracks can form if the drying takes place too quickly; they can be reworked. 

Therefore the back wall should be covered with foil for the first few days. By covering the humid background 

with a sand of a different color nice and colourful effects can be created.

Friedrich Wilhelm Henkel, who had already written more than a dozen 

books on terrarium-related topics, and Lutz Weynans, CEO of Namiba 

Terra GmbH, traveled on a research trip in the cloud and rain forests 

of Sri Lanka’s uplands, in keeping with the slogan "On Nature's 

Trail®." The focus and goal of the trip was to investigate and 

document the various habitats of extremely adapted reptilian species 

of its mountain regions, in light of biotope-relevant factors such as 

flora and fluctuations in temperature and humidity on a daily basis. 

At that time, the spectacularly large hump nosed lizard (Lyriocephalus 

scutatus) was able to be observed and photographed in the lowlands 

of the Singharaja rain forest, along with the only viviparous agamid 

species (Cophotis ceylanica) in Nuwara Eliya. The two explorers were 

accompanied by cameraman Grischa Kerstin of VOX. 

The film about the trip to Sri Lanka was broadcast on the "Tierzeit" 

(Animal Time) program on VOX in October 2004. This exciting undertaking 

provided a great deal of impetus to the development of new terrarium-related 

items suited to different animals and species. 

Expedition 2011 

In April 2011, there was another expedition to the former Ceylon. 

Subsequent to Friedrich Wilhelm Henkel and Lutz Weynans‘ travels 

through the west-central uplands of Sri Lanka, the destination this 

time was the still little-explored eastern portion of the Knuckles 

Mountain Range, along with the east side of the Singharaja rain forest 

(Morning Side). There were nearly daily reports on their latest activities 

and discoveries on the Namiba Terra Facebook page. 

Lying on the island’s west coast, the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo was the starting 

point for the trip. From there, the travelers moved northward across Kurunegala Province 

to Anuradhapura, the capital of the North Central Province. Anuradhapura was founded 

in the fourth century B.C. in the vicinity of the Sri Mahabodhi tree and was the first capital 

of Sri Lanka. Several large dagobas (stupas) are located in the city and the surrounding 

region, and, at the pilgrimage city of Ruwanvaliseya, the two travelers discovered numerous 

reptiles in close proximity to the large dagoba, well-camouflaged on mighty tree 

trunks. 

Large Asian water monitors (Varanus salvator) and representatives of the Indian 

changeable lizard (Calotes versicolor) could be observed on roadsides nearly 

everywhere, living in close proximity to people.

To the northeast coast and to the Polonnaruwa Province 

The expedition continued to move northward from Anuradhapura, and 

although the city of Trincomalee was only a little more than 100 km 

away, the trip over the pothole-ridden trail took more than five hours. 

After the civil war, all the roads in the North are in horrible condition, 

and the first flat tire had to be repaired in Trincomalee. 

On the next day, the expedition quickly moved on toward Sigiriya, 

a monolith where the ruins of an historic stone fortress are located and 

which was declared a UNESCO world cultural heritage site in 1982. 

About halfway up, there are frescoes of the famous Cloud Maidens 

under a rock overhang. 

Here skinks of the genus Mabuya appeared very frequently in the 

underbrush, along with Bengal monitors, another unique monitor 

species that is indigenous to Sri Lanka

After a detour to Polonnaruwa, the onetime capital of the second 

oldest kingdom in Sri Lanka, the expedition moved on to Kandy, a 

city in the central range. The upper left canine of the Buddha is said 

to be preserved at Kandy's so-called Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada 

Maligawa). This relic has made the city one of the most important 

pilgrimage sites of Buddhism. 

An interesting observation could be made in Kandy’s botanical garden. 

Geckos of the genus Cnemaspis apparently live on tree trunks 

in a symbiosis with large ants. The ants behave very aggressively 

toward predators such as monkeys. 

The geckos remain unmolested, however, and groups of them only 

inhabit trees harboring ant nests. Clutches of eggs belonging to these 

geckos were discovered, and repeated measurements determined 

that an egg hatch temperature of 24°C was never exceeded in the 

course of the day. An assignment to one of the subspecies, so far 21 

in number, of the genus Cnemaspis on Sri Lanka turned out to be 

extremely difficult since the geckos are marked very variably.

Into the Knuckle Mountains into the East Coast 

From Kandy, the expedition moved into the quite inaccessible part of 

the Eastern Knuckle Mountains, where the explorers, along with 

their guide, stopped for a few days and found shelter in an alpine hut. 

The periods for daily excursions into the rain forest were very limited 

since it rained heavily from 1 p.m. until late in the night. So it was all 

the more gratifying to find geckos of the species Cyrtodactylus soba 

living even on the hut’s walls.

The leaf-nosed agamas of the species Ceratophora tennentii are 

endemic to the Knuckle Mountains region. They exhibit no flight 

behavior and sit motionless in branches, relying totally on their 

camouflage. Similarly, you find the rare Calotes liocephalus agama 

exclusively in the area of the Knuckles rain forests.

Next, the expedition traveled through the city of Ampara in eastern 

Sri Lanka, along the coast southward toward Arugam Bay. On the 

way there, extensive clutches of another gecko, Calodactylodes 

illingworthorum, could be found in the cave near a temple, not far 

from Lake Senanayake Samudra. 

It appears that generations of geckos have continually laid their eggs 

in the same location for centuries. At nearly 90%, the high humidity 

of the cave walls and the constant temperature of 24°C seem ideally 

suited to incubation.

Into the Yala National Park and the Singharaja rain forest 

Making a brief stop at Arugam Bay’s wonderful beach, the expedition 

proceeded along the southeast coast toward Tissamaharama near 

Yala National Park. An adult Indian star tortoise (Geochelone elegans) 

could finally be found in the wild there. These tortoises are 

quite hard to find in Sri Lanka. During an excursion into the national 

park, elephants were observed and filmed, along with crocodiles, 

leopards and sloth bears. 

The expedition visited the port city of Galle on the last leg of the trip 

as the starting point for an excursion ultimately into the highland 

region of the Singharaja rain forest. In a true highlight of the expedition, 

splendid photos were taken of the dwarf agama Ceratophora 

karu in the Morning Side region. It was discovered and described just 

four years ago and lives well camouflaged in the thick masses of leaves 

on the floor of the cloud forests. The entire habitus of the animals 

displays a parallel development to the dwarf chameleons of the 

genus Brokesia on Madagascar. This agama shares its cloud forest 

habitat with the horned agama Ceratophora erdeleni, which was just 

discovered and described in 1998 but is found in the branches of 

shrubbery, apparently occupying the same the ecological niche as 

Ceratophora tennentii in the Knuckle Mountains. In addition, numerous 

species of frog were observed in Morning Side's rain forest area 

, but they could not be classified as any known species.

Various species of dwarf skinks, some of which are still undescribed, 

are also numerous in the Singharaja rain forest. From this, one can 

assume that some new descriptions should be expected in this genus 

as well as with the indigenous Cnemaspis species in the future. 

During this expedition, it was possible to photograph and document 

more than 60 different Cnemaspis populations in the most diverse 

locations of Sri Lanka. Interestingly, it was determined that these gekkos, 

no matter whether their habitat was in the low lands of the 

uplands, stayed on rocks or trees in environments where the ambient 

temperatures seldom surpassed 26°C. This confirms the thesis that 

many terrarium animals from the rain forest are kept at ambient temperatures 

that are much too high.

bark of trees to run and climb. The corkbark panel Portugal 

has a rough bark structure and Horta a smouth bark 

structure and a bright-creme colour. 

The Resurrection Fern (Selaginella lepidophylla) is an amazing 

plant that grows in Peru and Mexico. If you see it the first time, it 

appears just as a ball of dry, crisp leaves. But this plant has very 

special properties: drop it into a bowl of water and the plant actually 

awakes back to life and - uncurling its fronds - unravels itself 

to become a lush, green fern again.
