trnič, a small cheese, produced by the herdsmen during the pasture season. Dovja griča Cave (Dovja griča) is another landmark worth seeing. It is located in the Tiha dolina Valley and is only 9 m deep. It was made popular through legends, which supposedly took place near the cave. The cave provided shelter to many good as well as some notorious characters, most of which were invented by herdsmen themselves. The most famous are the legends about dovji možje, wild men who lived in Dovja griča Cave, also known as the wild rock, as the name itself implies. To recharge your batteries so that you can continue to explore Velika planina, treat yourself in the summer to some delicious home-made sour milk and bread or you can have lunch in one of mountain huts. Once you have taken in all the beauties of Velika planina and the charm of herdsmen’s life, return the same way down to the upper cable car station and drive down to your car. If you are a keen hiker, you can ascend Velika planina on foot by following trail signs along mountain footpaths. You may begin your tour at Strahovica, Kamniška Bistrica, Kraljev Hrib or Krivčevo, the later lies at the local road Strahovica-Črnivec. Approximate time for the ascent is 3 hours. On your way back, you may decide to ride down into the valley by the cable car. If you wish to stay here for a couple of days, you can book a room in one of the inns in Kamnik or its surronding area. 38 www.dediscina.si

The resort is a good starting point for all trekking and hiking tours across the neighbouring hills and villages. It will take you about an hour and a half to get to Gradišče. A big hill known as Gora sv. Miklaža rises above the village at an altitude of 750m. Its strategic position and appearance remind of the times of the infamous Ottoman invasion. In those days people built forts to protect what they had and loved most – their churches. The church on Gora looks more like a house. Bell tower stands detached from the main church building which has small windows. Art historians will be overwhelmed by the wooden Baroque altars painted by Valentino Metzinger. The artist also created some other artworks in the church. The coffer ceiling is also very impressive. On Sundays, from spring to the name day of the church’s patron saint on 6 th December, you will be 39
