The botanic gardens <strong>of</strong> Arboretum Volčji Potok bloom<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> year. You can spend here a couple <strong>of</strong> hours<br />

or, if you wish, an entire day and you will want to return<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>. As an added <strong>in</strong>centive, extend your trip <strong>for</strong> a visit <strong>of</strong><br />

Church <strong>of</strong> St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus <strong>in</strong> Groblje.<br />

Driv<strong>in</strong>g from Domžale to Mengeš, a road to Rodica soon branches<br />

<strong>of</strong>f from <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> road. Take this road and cont<strong>in</strong>ue till you arrive<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hamlet <strong>of</strong> Groblje where you can visit <strong>the</strong> pearl <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Slovene sacred architecture – <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> St. Hermagoras<br />

and Fortunatus (Cerkev sv. Mohorja <strong>in</strong> Fortunata). The church<br />

is famous <strong>for</strong> its side altar on <strong>the</strong> women’s side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church. The<br />

altar is dedicated to St. Notburga, patron sa<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poor, pilgrims<br />

and travellers, who accord<strong>in</strong>g to legend, gave food to <strong>the</strong><br />

poor. Frescos <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> church are <strong>the</strong> last major work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Slovene<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>ter Franc Jelovšek. Janez Vajkard Valvasor, a renowned<br />

Slovene historian, polymath and <strong>the</strong> first Slovene fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Royal Society <strong>of</strong> London, wrote that <strong>the</strong> hamlet <strong>of</strong> Groblje was<br />
