Perhaps some scholar will eventually make a study of the coincidence<br />

of confiscatory rates of taxation and the decline of a nation.<br />

Americans pay the highest rates of taxation ever suffered by any<br />

citizens, including those of Soviet Russia. Tax rates less than half<br />

those presently levied against our people have caused bloody revolutions<br />

in the past, notably the Rebellion of '76.<br />

Some observers of the literary scene have suggested that Pound<br />

as a teacher will finally outweigh Pound as a poet, but such a prediction<br />

depends largely upon the supposition, or the hope, that an<br />

epic poem greater than the Cantos will be written in our time.<br />

Pound's preeminence as a teacher and a poet is based upon his<br />

concern with essentials and his impatience with trivialities. The<br />

talent that breathlessly flung aside the dusty drapes of the Victorian<br />

era in search of "the real thing" has come into its own.
