I knew about, was all right, except that for a good period in the
concentration camp where there appears to have been a blackout
of memory.
"Q. That would not be unusual, in your opinion, Doctor, that
stress or strain?
"A. It is unusual when related to that emotional panic which he
experienced there at that concentration camp, and to which concentration
he was not used to.
"Q. Don't you think it is rather normal for a person subsequently
arrested for a charge of treason to be under great emotional
stress?
"A. I wouldn't know, Mr. Metlack [Isaiah Metlack, government
prosecutor]. I might suppose that would be an incentive to
keep your thoughts about you. The answer is, I don't know."
Dr. Marion R. King testifies:
"Q. How much have you read of his literary output?
"A. Very little of his poetry. I have seen one of the Cantos,
and samples of poetry that have been reprinted from others . . .
He was very much concerned with political, economic and monetary
problems, as time went on his enthusiasm became greater,
and there is no question but what he has a lot of sudden,
emotional feeling in connection with these hobbies . . . I am
convinced he glorifies in his rebelliousness rather than disguising
it, and that again is indicative of a paranoid condition or paranoid
state . . . I consider him to be a sensitive, eccentric, cynical
person, now in a paranoiac state of psychotic proportions which
renders him unfit for trial.
"Q. What classification would you state for Mr. Pound's mental
condition according to your classifications pertaining to mental
illness?
"A. I would say that would fall in two categories or paranoid
states, sometimes called paranoid conditions. That is not a very
satisfactory term because it is part way between so-called paranoid
schizophrenia and dementia praecox, paranoid type, and true
paranoia, and there are all types or gradations at different ex-
