concentration camp where there appears to have been a blackout<br />

of memory.<br />

"Q. That would not be unusual, in your opinion, Doctor, that<br />

stress or strain?<br />

"A. It is unusual when related to that emotional panic which he<br />

experienced there at that concentration camp, and to which concentration<br />

he was not used to.<br />

"Q. Don't you think it is rather normal for a person subsequently<br />

arrested for a charge of treason to be under great emotional<br />

stress?<br />

"A. I wouldn't know, Mr. Metlack [Isaiah Metlack, government<br />

prosecutor]. I might suppose that would be an incentive to<br />

keep your thoughts about you. The answer is, I don't know."<br />

Dr. Marion R. King testifies:<br />

"Q. How much have you read of his literary output?<br />

"A. Very little of his poetry. I have seen one of the Cantos,<br />

and samples of poetry that have been reprinted from others . . .<br />

He was very much concerned with political, economic and monetary<br />

problems, as time went on his enthusiasm became greater,<br />

and there is no question but what he has a lot of sudden,<br />

emotional feeling in connection with these hobbies . . . I am<br />

convinced he glorifies in his rebelliousness rather than disguising<br />

it, and that again is indicative of a paranoid condition or paranoid<br />

state . . . I consider him to be a sensitive, eccentric, cynical<br />

person, now in a paranoiac state of psychotic proportions which<br />

renders him unfit for trial.<br />

"Q. What classification would you state for Mr. Pound's mental<br />

condition according to your classifications pertaining to mental<br />

illness?<br />

"A. I would say that would fall in two categories or paranoid<br />

states, sometimes called paranoid conditions. That is not a very<br />

satisfactory term because it is part way between so-called paranoid<br />

schizophrenia and dementia praecox, paranoid type, and true<br />

paranoia, and there are all types or gradations at different ex-
