Georges Braque (who is not unimportant) said that "Miss Stein<br />

understood nothing of what went on around her." This was strong<br />

criticism of one who had appointed herself mentor of the Cubist<br />

movement.<br />

André Salmon was equally enlightening. He wrote, "Miss Stein's<br />

account of the formation of cubism is entirely false. . . . Miss<br />

Stein often mentions people whom she never knew very well, and<br />

so irresponsibly, in fact, that the reader is astounded. . . . And<br />

what confusion! What incomprehension of an epoch!"
