Centerville Wee Elks Centerville, Ohio Cheerleading Handbook 2013 In order to have a successful cheerleading program, parent participation is required. Our coaching teams are made up of parents, who volunteer their time for the kids. Cheer Coaching Teams include a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and Team Mom. In addition, each squad typically has a middle school cheerleader as their helper to teach cheers and dances. 4.1 Head Cheer Coach If you are interested in being a Head Coach, Assistant Coach or Team Mom, you must submit the Head Cheer Coach Application or Assistant Coach and Team Mom Form located in the back of this handbook or on our website (www.weeelks.org) by March 30, 2013. The Wee Elk Football Association, Inc. by-laws require a “Head Coach Application Form” to be submitted to the Board for review. Return this form during registration or mail the completed form to Lori Dunnigan, 1101 Quail Run Drive, Dayton OH 45458. Forms must be received no later than March 30, 2013. 4.2 Coach Selections Typically new Head Coaches will be asked to attend the April Wee Elk Board of Directors meeting for an interview. During the meeting, a ballot will list the names of all interested coaching candidates for open positions. Head coaches are then selected by a majority vote of the Wee Elk Board of Directors. Following the Board meeting, all candidates will be notified with the results. At least one Head Cheer Coach is required for each squad color at each grade level. Once head coaches are selected, they are given the opportunity to recruit assistant coaches and team moms for their Cheer Coaching Team. Coaches will be able recruit additional assistants based on the number of cheerleaders. We will have a 1 to 6 ratio for assistant coaches and team moms. These numbers are decided once the number of cheerleaders for each squad has been determined. Once these people are selected and agree to help, the head coach, assistant coach and team mom may declare their child/children protected together on the same squad. Head coaches need to notify the Cheer VP of their choices for assistant coach and team mom no later than Friday April 8, 2013. Please contact the Cheer VP if you need assistance obtaining an assistant coach or team mom. Only returning head coaches may keep their squad color from the year before. One black, one gold, one white, one silver and possibly one gray cheerleading squads are formed with participants in the 1st and 2nd grades combined (Bantam), and in each of the 3rd, 4th 5th and 6th grades. All head coaches and assistant coaches must attend a coaches meeting. This year’s meeting is set for Thursday June 6th, 2013. The location and time will be determined prior to the meeting. 4.3 Coach Certification In cooperation with the Centerville-Washington Twp. Park District, each coach must be certified by the NYSCA and complete a background check. These two documents will need to be mailed to the Vice President of Cheerleading no later than July 1 2013. This will be required by all head coaches, assistants and team mom’s. The Centerville Wee Elks will reimburse coaches for their background checks, however it is the responsibility of the coach to 6

These will be paid at camp only as long as all receipts have been turned into the Vice President. 4.4 Coaching The Squad Practice Space: Each head coach needs to find a location to hold her squad’s practices once the school year begins. Cheerleading squads typically practice in the gymnasium or cafeteria of a Centerville elementary or middle school. Space is limited. You must contact the principal of the school to see if your practice times will be available. A building use agreement form (available in the prospective school office) must be completed and signed by the head coach and the school principal. This form is then forwarded to the Centerville Board of Education for final approval. An approval or rejection letter is normally mailed back in a couple of weeks. Hint: If you have a specific school where you would like to hold your practices, submit your request prior to the end of the school year in June! Resources and Squad Supplies: Head coaches are usually assigned older cheerleaders to help them instruct cheers, chants, and a dance. Once school begins, these helpers often become committed to other activities. Try to get some kind of commitment from your helper/helpers early. All head coaches need to supply their own portable CD player for practices. Each squad receives a fully equipped first-aid box. Although it is helpful, coaches do not need to be CPR certified. Pom poms will be provided to each squad. Poms are to be collected from the cheerleaders at the conclusion of each event and remain with the Cheer Coaching Team throughout the season. Signs /props are optional and will need to be developed by each squad Coach’s Shirts: Each coach, assistant coach, and team mom will receive a coach’s shirt from the Wee Elk Association. We will have order forms and sample shirts at the Uniform / Shoe Fitting conducted between May 21 st and May 23 rd , 2013. You may purchase additional coach’s shirts, which must be paid for at time of order. 4.5 Team Moms The primary job of a team mom is to assist the coaches in whatever way possible. A coach’s job can be demanding and the team mom can help with “behind the scenes” work. Some coaches prefer to do a lot of the work themselves. Other coaches will welcome all help. It is up to the Cheer Coaching Team (coaches and team moms) to determine a plan that best fits the needs of the squad. Communication is the key. Team moms typically assist with typing newsletters, collecting money for squad expenses, assisting with social activities, coordinating the squad banquet, reminding parents when it’s their time to work at Schoolhouse Park, pickup trophies, etc. There will be a Team Mom meeting prior to the season. To find out if team mom positions are available, please contact the Cheer VP, Lori Dunnigan 937-232-8916. 5. Wee Elk Cheer Uniforms 7
