Dear Member,
Access to the fine arts has always been an important mission at WFMT and WTTW, and we are
uniquely positioned to bring them to you in a variety of different ways. This month, WTTW and WFMT
are pleased to mark National Poetry Month. WFMT will present an in-depth exploration of this singular
literary genre – focusing on history’s greatest poets, symphonic poems,
some well-known musical settings of poems, instrumental works in
tributes to poets, and much more – including a memorable Studs Terkel
conversation with Carl Sandburg, who famously dubbed Chicago the
“City of the Big Shoulders.” Be sure to visit wfmt.com to see a complete
lineup of what WFMT has in store, hear audio highlights, and learn about
future monthly themes. On WTTW Prime, don’t miss the American Masters
documentary, “The Day Carl Sandburg Died,” which examines the life
and work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and novelist, as well as the
controversy surrounding him.
This April, WTTW11 offers a fresh and eclectic mix of programming
sure to please the entire family. We meet a Kind Hearted Woman, journey
inside the human body with the BBC’s Michael Mosley, observe Holocaust
Remembrance Day with two new programs, delve into The American Songbook with Michael Feinstein,
explore Australia at the dawn of time with NOVA, and reveal The Secret Life of Ice. As only he can, Ken
Burns tells the dramatic story of The Central Park Five, we give you an opportunity to vote for your
favorite international commercials on wttw.com, and bring you new episodes of Call the Midwife and
Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge. And we introduce you to the four intrepid female sleuths who make
up The Bletchley Circle. April will truly be a month to remember!
On WFMT, the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday afternoon matinée series will continue with Wagner’s
Ring cycle, part of the Met’s tribute to the Wagner bicentennial, starring Deborah Voigt as Bruennhilde
and Mark Delavan as Wotan in Robert Lepage’s production. The cycle begins with “Das Rheingold” on
April 6. As part of our National Poetry Month celebration, we’ll feature classic readings from poetry
ancient and modern, recorded by Dame Edith Sitwell, Julie Harris, Ed Begley, William Carlos Williams,
Carl Sandburg, and many others. WFMT’s Kerry Frumkin will be joined by pianist Inna Faliks, a frequent
WFMT guest, for two more editions of their “Music/Words” poetry special, on April 8 and 15.
Don’t miss these highlights and other programming during the month of April. Watch WTTW online
at wttw.com or via the PBS Mobile App (learn how at wttw.com/mobile) and listen to WFMT online at
wfmt.com or through our WFMT App (learn how at wfmt.com/streaming). As always, thank you for
your generous support and loyalty.
of his country and everyone
as the most low-lying country in the world, a minor rise in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the
Maldives.
Happy Birthday Wagner!
Join us for this special all day seminar which will include a lecture, discussion,
and lunch. It will be a day you won’t forget.
The name Richard Wagner clangs copious sonorities in Walter Rudolph’s
brain, including Wagner’s searching early works, his erratic behavior, tunnel
vision, and impetuous demand for legendary-status-recognition from the
world of his day. Learn about Wagner’s genius and grasp a bit of why Wagner’s
creations not only demand, but deserve our attention. Most of all, experience
the diverse musical styles defining Richard Wagner during the month of his
200th birthday.
Walter Rudolph considers himself the imperfect Wagnerite. During his 35
plus years in public radio (Classical 89, KBYU-FM in Provo, Utah), he reported
on all things Wagnerian from Bayreuth, Brussels, and Berlin to Dallas, San
Francisco, and New York.
Voices of Resistance
This new documentary tells the story
of the concentration camp Terezin in
the Czech Republic, where a large
number of Jewish artists, musicians,
poets, and writers were incarcerated
under the Nazis. In the face of horrific
threat of deportation to Auschwitz, the
inmates of Terezin stood up to their Nazi
oppressors and did the unthinkable:
they fought back with art and music.
Six decades later, conductor Murry
Intelligence
Squared: Does
Science Refute God?
It’s a fundamental question: evolution or
creation? Americans are on the fence.
According to one survey, while 61%
of Americans believe we have evolved
over time, 22% believe this evolution
was guided by a higher power, with
another 31% on the side of creationism.
For some, modern science debunks
many of religion’s core beliefs, but
for others, questions like “Why are
we here?” and “How did it all come
about?” can only be answered through
a belief in the existence of God. Can
science and religion co-exist?
Late in the evening of April 19, 1989,
Tricia Meili, a 28-year-old white
investment banker, went jogging
through Central Park in New York City.
When she was found hours later, she
had been brutally raped, beaten, and
left for dead. This film by Ken Burns
examines the notorious crime, the
media response, and the public outcry
it triggered, and the miscarriage of
justice that followed it, probing the
larger issues it raises about our nation’s
complicated past.
American Masters: The
Day Carl Sandburg Died
For much of the 20th century, Carl
Sandburg was synonymous with the
American experience, a spokesman
on behalf of “the people.” Using
his unique life – from impoverished
beginnings on the Illinois prairie to the
halls of Congress to The Ed Sullivan
Show – as the basis for free-verse
poetry, Sandburg became one of the
most successful writers in the English
language: a three-time Pulitzer Prizewinner,
biographer (most notably of
Abraham Lincoln), children’s storyteller,
novelist, and captivating performer.
Yet, after his death in 1967, his literary
legacy faded and his poems, once
taught in schools across America, were
dismissed under the weight of critical
attack. This documentary examines the
life, work, and controversy surrounding
Border Patrol agents, Native Americans,
smugglers, ranchers, retirees, and
Samaritans form a constellation of
people engaged with the Arizona/
Mexico border on a daily basis –
policing it, inhabiting it, crossing it,
working it, making it safer, or simply
feeling its consequences. But at the
center of it all is the migrant. This is
the story of the migrants who die while
trying to cross an unforgiving desert in
search of a better life.
In the Spotlight
Esa-Pekka Salonen
Chicago Symphony
Orchestra Radio
Broadcasts: Tristan
A major theme of the 2012-13
season of the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra has been The Wagner
Effect: exploring, during Richard
Wagner’s bicentennial year, the
tremendous influence his music
had on composers of his own time
and of the following generations.
Forming part of the celebration were
the February performances under
guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen
of Act 2 of the music drama Tristan
und Isolde with tenor Stefan Vinke
and soprano Linda Watson in the
title roles. Said John Von Rhein in
the Chicago Tribune: “[The lovers
share] a passion that can thrive
only under the protective cover of
darkness, can only be fulfilled in the
blessed oblivion of eternal night.
Wagner’s death-intoxicated music
never relaxes its grip on an audience.
The listener, like the characters
themselves, is caught up in a powerful
trajectory of emotions quite unlike
any other experience in music.”
Bill McGlaughlin Visits
The Roaring Twenties
As Bill puts it: “In the 1920s, concert
halls rocked with everything from jazz
to airplane propellers, radio became
a multimillion-dollar industry, and
art and literature flowed like bathtub
gin.” Five shows will focus on the
lively musical activity in New York
City – where composers including
Copland, Varese, and Gershwin were
working – plus Paris, home to the
French Group des Six, and Berlin,
with the innovations of Hindemith,
Kurt Weill, and many others.
In the Spotlight
Pierre-Laurent Aimard
The New York
Philharmonic This
Week: Aimard Plays
A New Concerto
The U.S premiere of
Le Désenchantement du Monde,
Symphonic Concerto for Piano and
Orchestra is being given this month
by conductor David Robertson, the
New York Philharmonic, and pianist
Pierre-Laurent Aimard, a longtime
friend of the composer, France’s
Tristan Murail. The composer has
said: “Can one still write for the piano
today? Through the 19th century
and to the beginning of the 20th it
was the emblematic instrument…but
has it survived the array of tortures
inflicted upon it by the end of the 20th
century? After the clusters of Henry
Cowell, the preparations of John
Cage, the ornithological percussions
of Messiaen, the electrified mantras
of Stockhausen, and the various
scrapings and pinchings of strings –
what space is left to the imagination?”
Murail’s new concerto is his attempt
to answer the question. On the
same program Aimard will also
play a much more familiar work:
Mozart’s Concerto in A, K 488.
Live from the Met:
A Handel Classic
A new production at the Metropolitan
Opera this season is Handel’s Giulio
Cesare, or Julius Caesar. David
McVicar’s staging “incorporates
elements of Baroque theater and
19th-century British imperialism
to illuminate the opera’s themes
of love, war, and empire-building,”
according to the Met’s preview.
David Daniels sings the title role
with Natalie Dessay as Cleopatra,
Alice Coote as Sesto, and Patricia
Bardon as Cornelia, with Baroque
maven Harry Bicket conducting.
Chicago Symphony:
Salonen and Yo-Yo Ma
Cellist and CSO creative consultant
Yo-Yo Ma joined the orchestra under
Esa-Pekka Salonen this winter to
perform the Cello Concerto by Witold
Lutoslawski. Writing in the Chicago
Tribune, John Von Rhein noted:
“With this 1970 masterpiece, written
for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich,
Lutoslawski re-invented the
relationship between soloist and
orchestra. The subliminal dramatic
scheme casts the cellist as a solitary
individual menaced by the orchestral
mob…. Only at the end of this
tumultuous battle of wills are the
tables turned, and the cello’s voice
prevails, undimmed and indomitable:
order has been restored out of chaos.”
