invigorating news
from an industry leader

dear reader!
a l m o s t h a l f a y e a r has passed since we published
the first edition of Larsson Magazine. We
have received positive response for the previous
edition, which inspires us to make more.
During the last half year Larsson has been
active in many areas; we have won a number
of bigger projects, displayed on various fairs,
presented a newly developed sieve cone, delivered
a complete plant to Sahasinwattana
Starch Derivatives in Thailand, delivered extractors
and hydrocyclones to Karup Kartoffelmelfabrik
in Denmark etc. You can find
out more about this in the magazine.
Larsson has also profited from appointing
two engineers.
Thereby we have widened our expertise and
can now offer our customers lines for starch
modifying.
Very interesting things are happening in the
industry and we have noticed a big interest in
reducing energy consumption. Through further
development of processes and use of new
tech nology we can help our clients in this.
An important part of optimising energy
con sumption is a well thought-out and well
utilised automation together with energy efficient
machines.
Larsson puts great importance to that and
we are steadily finding new ways to reduce
energy consumption in both new and existing
plants.
Due to our high sales and revenue increase,
the management team is currently working hard
to strengthen and optimise the organisation.
Larsson has a record high order backlog and
we expect even more contracts. It is very inspiring
to feel the great confidence from our
clients and this makes the work go easy.
Managing Director
editorial
Larsson has further developed the traditional sieve
cones. The result is improved durability and
increased production capacity for the customers.
strengthened sieve cone
increases capacity and durability
During the last fair in Detmold in Germany Larsson presented
its new discovery; a stronger sieve cone that eliminates the
change of straining cloths.
– Straining cloths were previously a wear part, but with our
solution the durability is now several years, says Jörgen Larsson.
t h e ne w si e v e c o n e stirred big interest at the fair. The secret is that a strong plate, with
a two millimetre thickness, has been perforated with holes that are only 150 μm in diametre.
The holes fall into a cone-formed opening that helps in letting the material through.
Wheat starch production is normally connected with the traditional straining cloths.
Therefore Larsson expects that producers of wheat starch will benefit a lot from the new
stronger sieve cone. It can be customised entirely according to the customer requirements,
both in terms of size and hole diametre.
– Our new sieve cone increases the capacity and production of our customers as they
can drive on high speed and clean the cone during operation with high pressure. Thereby,
you can cleanse what is stopping up the sieve, says Jörgen Larsson.
Older machines can also be equipped with the new sieve cone without any big modifications.
Initially the cone shall be manufactured for the GL1050 sieves, but later the GL850
size shall also be developed.
– It does not matter if you bought the machine 25 years ago, it will fit, promises
Jörgen Larsson.
The new sieve cone is a result of a partnership between three players; Wolfgang Röge
in Germany, Sahasin S&S in Thailand and Larsson.

leading position in china
thanks to new office
Sarah Liu is responsible for the work at the representative
office in Guangzhou in China, together with the technician
Han Xinliang and Mauri Lehtismäki.
– The sales in our region are steadily rising. Today
Larssons holds 50 percent of the market among foreign
suppliers in China, says Sarah.
a b i g p a r t of Sarah Liu’s work has so far
been related to sales and presentation to new
customers, with the aim to make Larsson
well known on the Chinese market. She has
succeeded with a key in her hands. Today instead,
a big part of her work comprises serving
and supporting existing customers. As a
trademark Larsson is highly respected and
sought by many due to its high quality.
Sarah travels a lot to customers together
New office focuses on the continent
To increase its catchment area
and widen its expertise to the
south, Larsson opened a new
construction office in Malmö.
Tomas Nilsson, a new and
old employee, contributes with
his knowledge in the region.
with a technician or with a representative
from Sweden.
– We invest a lot of energy to be available
for our clients. We have the knowledge and
can therefore offer a complete aftermarket as
well.
It is a fact that discussions are underway for
recruiting an additional reseller at the office
next year. His/her focus will be on wheat and
corn starch, admits Sarah Liu.
Here, in the World Trade Center in Malmö,
Larsson has its newly opened construction office.
f o r m a n y r e a s o n s Larsson has identified the
need of a new office in Malmö. The closeness
to the strait and thus to the continent is important,
but also the possibility to be able to serve
existing customers.
Being represented in a big city is an advantage
in recruitment terms as well.
For Tomas Nilsson, who previously worked
for Larsson in Bromölla, the establishment here
is a chance to leave the year-long intrusion on
Tetra Pak.
– It is exciting to work in Malmö.
I feel I can contribute with a lot of expertise
in this region, which I know well from
before, he says.
The construction office is at the World
Sarah Liu, Mauri Lehtismäki and Han Xinliang represent Larsson
with its own representative office in Chinese Guangzhou. The
photo was made at the Shanghai fair earlier this year.
The first big project was carried out in
2004–2005, when a large plant was built.
This turned out a successful premiere with a
very satisfied customer that is today a valuable
referee.
Today several big projects are underway,
among others in Chenghua, FuLin-Men and
Ding-Xi.
Tomas Nilsson is still alone at the newly opened office in
Malmö, but he will soon get a colleague.
Trade Center in the western harbour. There
are great opportunities here for exchange
with clients as well as colleagues.
– Once a week I also visit the headoffice in
Bromölla to get updates and solidarity from
the colleagues, he says.
Just now he is managing a big project in
Belarus where he is responsible for a brand
new plant and the delivery includes the entire
chain, from receipt to packing.
He considers it very stimulating to have
the responsibility for an entire project.
– Besides the construction, I will participate
in the start-up of the factory and during
the erection process I am also head of the
project, he says.
på gång
record low consumption for
Sahasinwattana Starch Derivatives
o n ly t h e e l e c t r i c a l installations remain
before the new big tapioca starch plant in
Chantaburi in Thailand can be tested and
come on stream in the autumn. Larsson has
delivered all the equipment from receipt of
raw materials to ready starch.
The focus is on minimising the consumption
of water and energy and as you already
know, Larsson is a global leader in this area.
– This is the plant with the lowest energy
4
consumption ever in whose construction we
have participated, if you look at the energy
consumption per kg starch that is produced.
We have laboured a lot for this, says Thomas
Johansson at Larsson, who has been head of
the project together with Jan Hamer.
– It is an honour to be chosen as main provider
of machines and accessories in such a
project, says Jan Hamer and names the parts
for which Larsson has been respon sible:
turnkey plant in Belarus
it b e c a m e c l e a r in April that Larsson shall deliver a complete and
turnkey starch plant to Rogoznitsa Starch Factory in Belarus.
Larsson has been in contact with the client since 2003.
– The delivery includes the complete chain from specimens taking
of the raw material to a ready packed product, and so it is a relatively
big project, says Tomas Nilsson, who is head of the project.
In February Larsson shall have delivered all its products, but the
plant will start production in September 2009.
– It is our first project in Belarus and it is exciting to enter new markets.
Belarus is a country with traditions rich in potatoes and this means
big demand because there is an old fleet of machines that need to be
replaced, continues Tomas.
Larsson also delivers the electrical equipment, control and the automation
and is also responsible for on-site training of the personnel so
that they can rely on the plant.
Photos from the construction of the new plant in
Thailand, to which Larsson, among other things,
has been main provider of machinery and
accessories.
– The deliveries
included root intakes,
division of the
roots, determination of
starch content and dead
weight, transport to warehouse,
cleaning, wet pro cess and construction
of an motor control centre etc.
There was an air of festivity when Larsson signed the contract with Rogoznitsa
Starch Factory in Belarus. Representatives of both parties can be seen on the photo.

New player invests in germany
j u s t n o w Larsson is taking part in a big
wheat starch project of FRP.CS.GmbH in
Germany.
It is, according to the project manager Jonas
Oskarsson, very unusual that a new player is
stepping into and investing in the starch industry
in Europe.
– Just therefore it is both a unique and
quite exciting project, in which we
premiere of upgraded
elevator in Kristianstad
in k r i s t i a n s ta d, in southern Sweden Lyckeby
is renovating its existing plant in Nöbbelöv
and is replacing parts of its machinery park.
Richard Klang is project manager within
consulting for Larsson. He has also designed
and constructed the machines that Larsson
sold to the project.
– The project is divided in several phases
in which Lyckeby Stärkelsen has chosen to
begin with doubling the capacity of receipt
and cleaning of potatoes. Most of the machines
included are already part of Larssons standard
product range so large part of the work
are a supplier to Linde-KCA, a large engineering
agency in Dresden, that is responsible for
the construction.
Previously, the starch industry was only
about consolidations and other changes in
existing companies, but this here is a brand new
plant under construction from the grounds,
says Jonas Oskarsson.
Computerised overview of the
new wheat starch plant in FRP.
CS.GmbH in Germany, where
Larsson is a supplier.
comprises layout construction. At the same
time we have worked a lot to modernise
and improve certain parts, first of all a new
vertical elevator, says Richard Klang.
Compared with earlier versions the upgraded
elevator has been executed with a
new belt and has improved performance,
increased durability and lower energy
consumption.
main machinery
for fulinmen
a n e w u n i t for production of wheat starch will be
built for FuLlinMen in Heilongjiang in northeastern
China.
Sarah Liu from the Chinese office says that this
is the first wheat starch project for Larsson in the
region.
Larsson shall deliver the main machinery park
and process expertise during the year.
The plant will come on stream next year.
its expansion. All existing equipment was replaced
with new energy and water efficient technology.
– This will be the most energy efficient plant in
Europe, says Jörgen Larsson at Larsson who is
the one leading the work in Karup.
– I consider it a natural development to produce
more and more energy efficient solutions, he added.
Chinese Shaanxi province. Larsson shall deliver
the entire production line from receipt of raw
material to drying and starch modifying. This is
Larsson’s first starch project in the province.
– We expect that the project shall become an
important referee for us in the future, says Sara
Liu who is project manager at the office in China.
t h e e n v i r o n m e n t consideration is in focus in
Ding-Xi, where Larsson takes part and delivers
a complete machine line for production of potato
starch, proteins from fruit juice, which otherwise is
considered a waste problem.
– This project is also an important referee for us.
Unfortunately, the project has been delayed for
some time on customer demand, says Sarah Liu.
the strength of the subsuppliers is larsson’s strength
always the latest – thanks to competent subsuppliers
Thanks to a close cooperation with different subsuppliers Larsson can always offer the latest
technology.
– Energy saving steps and data bus controlled PLC programmes are on the agenda today,
say Anders Olsson at AO Automationskonsult and Anders Engqvist at LMT Elteknik AB, who
are both partners contributing with their knowledge within automation.
a n d e r s o l s s o n is electrical consultant and
programmer in the one-man company AO
Automation.
He has cooperated with Larsson for 20 years.
Anders Engqvist works as automation technician
at the 29-man company LMT Elteknik
AB. They have cooperated with Larsson since
2005.
No matter the size of the company, their
joint purpose is to contribute with the industry’s
latest solutions within automation for
Larsson’s customers.
That includes electrical installations and
automation installations, PLC programming
and on-site commissioning for the customer,
to give some examples.
6
Anders Engqvist is CEO of LMT Elteknik and a
valuable provider of automation for Larsson...
– Besides the specifications we get from
Larsson, we can perform 90 percent of the job
in-house. Only the commissioning takes place
at the customers worldwide, says Anders
Engqvist.
He and Anders Olsson see a clear trend
that we are heading towards more environment-friendly
and energy efficient products.
– The best way to save energy today is to
create solutions, in which it is possible to
regulate the speed of pumps and motors, instead
of running in full speed and then use
control valves that steer the flow, says Anders
Olsson.
– It is also important to shape the plant
pro perly, which will save energy and give
Increased control of digits creates security
While the growth is rising,
even higher requirements on
financial control are imposed.
– Larsson’s size needs a
business controller, says
Alexander Valentinsson, who is
newly appointed in the position.
l a r s s o n ’s e c o n o m y still looks bright. It is
traditionally a solid company with high sustainability,
loyal and competent personnel and
good subsuppliers.
– We report a profit every year. Some successful
projects have been concluded this year
and a full order backlog is not likely to change
this either, says Alexander Valentinsson.
In the role of business controller his job is
to maintain the company’s financial strength
Alexander Valentinsson is new controller
at Larsson. ”This is a secure company
with high sustainability”, he says.
...just as Anders Olsson at
AO Automationskonsult.
a better product in the end, says Anders
Enqvist.
The two Anders see the need of even more
controls in the future, when the clients will
steadily strive after optimising their plants.
– It is becoming normal for us to participate
in projects and build whole factories in which
the automation is present in everything from
weighing in to packaging. In these cases there
are a number of complex controls, they say.
New technology is born every day in the
automation industry.
As subsuppliers they are well informed
about the news and make sure to always provide
proven and functioning solutions for
Larsson’s customers.
and thereby its existence. He is responsible
for the financial reports, the balance sheet,
the cash flow forecast, currency hedging and
the follow-up of the current accounts.
– With strengthened financial control we
can maintain the quality for our customers.
Everyone who works with us can be sure that
we are a sustainable and secure company,
says Alexander.

Helén Elmberg in the role of personnel manager
has been responsible for the intensive
recruitment lately.
the personnel manager has busy days
Successful recruitments ensure growth
The strong expansion requires efficient fresh recruitment of
competent personnel.
– It looks extremely positive and we will really make good use
of the future prospects we have, says Helén Elmberg who is
personnel manager.
d e s p i t e h i g h d e m a n d for competent personnel
Larsson has succeeded in its recruitment
process.
The plant’s demand is sufficed for now and at
the office, the purchase and spare parts sales
need to be strengthened.
– As part of the growth, we have also opened
a new position of technical manager, but it is
still vacant, says Helén Elmberg who is personnel
manager.
Currently the staff comprises 29 men and
women. Here come some external consultants
hired if necessary.
Because the main part of Larsson’s customer
base is abroad it is, according to Helén
Elmberg, very insignificant where the staff
comes from. The main thing is to have the
right expertise and personality.
fairs show that the world needs Swedish technology
Larsson sees great benefit in
participating in different fairs
and workshops worldwide.
– It is in these forms that we
make new contacts and
customers,says Jörgen Larsson,
who has been in Germany
and China so far this year.
At the Detmold fair in Germany Jonas Oskarsson
presented, among others, the new sieve cone.
in t h e f i r s t week of April this year the annual
fair of the starch industry was held in
Shanghai in China. It is a relatively small fair
with only twenty exhibitors. Larsson, of course,
participated with its own stand.
Among others, we showed photos, brochures
and made a presentation of the company.
– We were full from opening to closing,
says Jörgen Larsson, who noticed a clear
trend that more and more customers want to
have modern technology that is both energy
efficient and water saving.
– We managed to establish us as a quality
brand in China and therefore many want to
have our equipment. It feels fantastic to be a
“premium brand” on such a big continent.
We have interests from producers of potato,
tapioca, wheat and corn starch.
Later in April, the annual starch seminar in
Detmold, Germany was held. As a side activity
companies related to the industry could hold
a little exhibition. Production machines and
laboratory equipment were demonstrated.
Larsson took advantage of the occasion
and showed its latest product; the strong sieve
cone which entirely replaces the traditionally
straining cloths that are otherwise considered
wear parts.
With his wide knowledge
within starch modifying and
native wheat starch Jonas
Oskarsson has filled a gap
at Larsson.
Jonas knowledge within starch modifying increases customer benefit
Together with project manager
Jonas Oskarsson the previous
year, Larsson widened its
expertise to include modifying
of starch as well.
– I am responsible for the
entire chain, from sales to
process design and start up,
says Jonas Oskarsson.
d u r i n g h i s m a n y trips to customers worldwide,
managing director Jörgen Larsson saw
the need of a fresh recruitment which shall
manage to meet the customer requirements for
production technology for modified starch and
native wheat starch. The choice fell on Jonas
Oskarsson, who had long term experience with
such assignments at his previous workplace.
Traditionally, Larsson has only focused on
selling machines for production of native starch,
but with the help of Jonas company also have
the knowledge to design customised processes
when it comes to starch modification
and production of wheat starch.
– The machines we produce have always
managed wheat starch as well, although it is
harder to work up.
When we have many inquiries regarding
wheat starch it is important to adjust the
equipment so that we can clearly show that
we have expanded, says Jonas Oskarsson.
Projects regarding technology for modified
starch to a great extent refer to having knowhow
also about machines. The requirements
for knowledge are high when it comes to
handling chemicals that are corrosive, explosive
and dangerous to the health.
– The processes are unique for each customer
because there are a great number of different
ways to modify starch, this is the difference
compared to projects for potato starch, concludes
Jonas.
