“Owning a gun is

Nick Antrillo’s first shooting experience happened on a
deer hunting trip in 1960 at the age of six, under the
supervision of his father and his Uncle Joe.
Nick got to carry a lever
action Winchester Model
94, chambered for the 30-30
cartridge. They didn’t see any deer,
probably because a proper stalk is
difficult with a 6-year-old chattering
constantly, “Can I shoot a deer, Dad?
Huh, can I? What do they look like? I bet
I’ll see him first. Were there any deer
here? What about over there? When
I shoot it we’ll get the biggest buck
ever.” One afternoon they stopped
the hunt and set up a can on a rock
instead. Nick’s father then taught him
to shoot the 30-30. The stock was too
long to shoulder, so Nick fired with the
buttstock under his armpit. He aimed
down the buckhorn open sight and hit
within a foot of the target. He hasn’t
stopped shooting since, and his aim
much improved with practice.
Guns and shooting have been in
Nick’s family for generations. Records
show an ancestor immigrating to New

Jersey Colony in 1775 and joining the
New Jersey Militia in 1776 to fight in the
Revolutionary War. Every succeeding
generation has been involved in guns,
shooting, hunting, and competition.
Even his grandmother had a Colt 1908
Hammerless pistol with a beautiful
carbonic blue finish. Nick still owns that
pistol. Most of his cousins also shoot
and hunt; several have concealed carry
permits in their own state of residence.
Even Nick’s brother (now living in antigun
California) has always enjoyed the
shooting sports. Both brothers cherish
the childhood memories of shooting
together with their parents.
