The book worm
Snuggle up in front of the fire this Christmas with a few good books...
Jilly Cooper – Jump
When Etta Bancroft’s bullying husband dies, Etta’s selfish, ambitious
children drag her from her lovely Dorset house to live in a hideous
modern bungalow in the Cotswold village of Willowwood.
Etta’s life is transformed when she finds a horribly mutilated filly wandering
in the woods. She names her Mrs Wilkinson and nurses her back to
health. The filly charms everyone in the village, and when tests reveal her
to be a spectacularly well-bred racehorse a village syndicate is formed to
put the filly into training. She brings fame and fortune to the syndicate,
until; at last, she is entered in the greatest jump race of them all. Can Mrs
Wilkinson win the Grand National? And can Etta gain her heart’s desire?
Perfect for cold winter nights
What will be: The Autobiography,
William Fox-Pitt - Minty Clinch
William Fox-Pitt has been one of the most successful three-day event
riders for many years. He began eventing at the age of fifteen and
decided to pursue this passion as a career after graduating from
university. In 2004, he had a year of extremes, going from winning
Badminton to having the agony of seeing his horse get injured
during the Olympics, which destroyed his chances of an individual
medal and prevented the team from winning gold. The following
year, he won Burghley, Gatcombe and Bramham to confirm himself
as Britain’s top rider. In his autobiography, he talks about the issues
confronting the sport and reveals much about the vital partnerships
with team-mates and, above all, the horses that help him to gain
such success.
Great inspiration!
Horses Never Lie – Mark Rashid
£12.99 Available from
www.countrywidefarmers.co.uk
In this book Mark Rashid challenges
the longstanding belief that in order to
achieve success with horses a person
must take a dominant role, becoming
the ‘alpha leader’. Instead this remarkable
book teaches you how to become
a ‘passive leader’, a term coined by
Mark that reflects the leadership values
that really work with horses: those of
partnership, guidance and support.
Our Top photography tips
• Make sure your picture is sharp, there’s nothing worse than a blurred or ‘grainy’ picture.
• Focus on your subject rather than the foreground/background.
• What will be your inspiration? Action, comedy, cute, success, the English countryside… the
list is endless but all exciting.
• The image doesn’t just have to be one horse; it could be a group of friends out riding.
• Think about composition - your picture will be used on the cover of Stable Talk so it will
need to be portrait orientation and remember there will be text placed around your image.
Have a look the collection of Stable Talk front covers for a guide.
• Always take your pictures on a high quality setting – tiny images taken on mobile phones
are no good.
Fibre First
Fibre is an essential part of every horse and pony’s diet. Although most of this will be
from grass and hay, don’t forget that there are fibre feeds available to help boost your
horse or pony’s fibre intake, particularly if hay is in short supply or of poor quality.
Allen & Page explains more…
Hay replacement
As horses and ponies are grazing animals, hay
and grass are essential in the diet. Hay and
grass contain a high percentage of fibre which
is crucial in the horse for the production of
energy.
It is the fermentation of fibre that creates
this energy, so if fibre is lacking in the diet,
the horse or pony will start to lose weight,
particularly during the winter.
Allen & Page Fast Fibre is a must in any feed
room when good forage sources are limited.
Fast Fibre can be fed as a complete or partial
hay replacement – with a fibre content of 28%
Fast Fibre is also low in starch and soluble
sugars, making it an ideal fibre source. Not
only that, Fast Fibre is balanced with vitamins
and minerals and soaks in under a minute to
form a soft palatable mash.
For more feeding tips and
information ask your local store
Equestrian Specialist, or visit
www.allenandpage.co.uk
Feeding for condition
During the winter months some horses can struggle to maintain weight and condition,
however, feeding a diet rich in fibre and oil can help to ensure your horse remains in
good condition.
Fibre and oil
Feed ingredients such as fibre and oil provide
excellent sources of slow release energy and
are ideal for horses who tend to loose weight
over the winter months as well as for those
who need extra stamina, such as endurance or
event horses.
Calm & Condition is a soaked feed (soaks in
under 10 minutes!), for horses who need to
put on or maintain condition and is also used
successfully for competition horses who are
working hard. Highly digestible with slow
release energy from fibre and oil, Calm &
Condition is low in starch and sugar, high in
fibre and contains linseed, a good source of
omega 3. Balanced with essential vitamins and
minerals, Calm & Condition also contains pre
it is part of the Barley & Molasses Free Range,
it is also perfect for horses with a true barley
Tip Top Trailer
Towing
Owning a horse will inevitably mean that you will at some point have to tow a trailer,
and this can be quite a tricky business even for someone who’s experienced. Here’s our
guide to making sure you’re a tip top trailer tower…
Licensing laws
If you passed your car test before 1st January
1997 you’ll retain your existing entitlement to
tow trailers until your license expires. This means
you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and
trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. The
MAM is the maximum authorised mass of vehicles
and trailers. This should be taken to mean the
permissible maximum weight, also known as the
gross vehicle weight. However, if you passed your
car test after 1st January 1997 and you wish to
drive vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes MAM combined
with trailers in excess of 750kgs MAM you’ll
require a further practical test for category B+E.
There is no category B+E theory test.
From 19th January 2013 there will be further
changes for anyone who passes their driving test
after this date.
PAGE 14 Stable Talk - December
Insurance
While it’s not a legal requirement to insure your
horse trailer, it’s very much recommended - not
only is a horse trailer a big investment and can be
a tempting target for thieves. But given the fact
you’re travelling with large, unpredictable animals
it’s a good idea to have piece of mind that you’ll
be covered if the worst happens.
Your towing vehicle insurance will most likely
include the minimum legal third party cover (but
check your policy) although third party won’t
cover the theft of or any damage to your horse
trailer. You can make sure your horse trailer is fully
covered either by extending the insurance cover
on your towing vehicle or by taking out a separate
horse trailer insurance policy.
And just like other types of insurance make sure
you shop around to get the best deal.

Trailer Maintenance
It’s strongly advised that you have your horse trailer professionally serviced on an annual basis –
just like your car it can help to keep everything in good working order.
Before each journey
• Check the electrics – make sure that brake
and indicator lights are working both on the
horse trailer and your towing vehicle.
• Check your hitching – ensure that the brake
is off, the jockey wheel raised and the
breakaway cable is securely attached.
• Check your weights – make sure the
combined weight of your horse(s) and horse
trailer doesn’t exceed the safe towing limit
for your vehicle.
• Check each tyre for pressure and signs of
wear & that your spare tyre is fully inflated.
• Ensure the registration number fixed to your
horse trailer matches that of the towing
vehicle and is clearly visible.
• Muck out the horse trailer after every journey,
thoroughly clean the floor and allow it to dry
before shutting ramps and doors.
General maintenance
• If possible, park your horse trailer on hard
standing and under cover.
• Don’t store the horse trailer with damp
bedding on board – ensure any left on is
clean and dry to prevent rot.
• Every so often power wash the horse trailer
inside and out, but make sure it’s thoroughly
dry before shutting doors and parking again.
• Regularly lift the rubber matting to check
soundness of floor beneath, especially in
horse trailers with timber floors.
• Check ramp, door hinges, wires and
fastenings are in working order.
• Keep your vehicle’s towball well-greased to
avoid wear & tear.
Horse Trailer Security
Unfortunately, horse trailers are a common
target for thieves. To help make sure your horse
trailer doesn’t become another police statistic
there are a number of measures you can take…
Registering your horse trailer with TER (The
National Plant & Equipment Register) will ensure
your horse trailer’s serial number can be traced
back to you in the event of a theft.
Trailermark allows you to put your own mark on
your horse trailer – literally! Large, self-adhesive
lettering enables you to put your own code on
your horse trailer, making it highly conspicuous.
Trailermark keeps a database of all numbers
alongside owners’ details to help with tracking.
Data Tag, meanwhile, uses state-of-the-art
identification technology to mark your horse
trailer in a way that’s virtually impossible for a
thief to detect, but that the police will be able to
identify and trace back to the registered owner.
In addition to these services, there
are lots of security accessories on the
market, from wheel and hitch locks to
alarms, all aimed at making your horse
trailer more secure.
