t Dining Adventure
Eat dinner like the
Looking to put some danger into your
dining? A unique culinary and theatrical
experience awaits in Buena Park
with a delightfully piraty twist.
Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is a swaggering,
humorous, musical adventure spectacular,
acclaimed as “the world’s most unique
interactive dinner show.” This Broadwaystyle
show is presented on an enormous,
fully-rigged pirate’s galleon. The replicated
18th-century Spanish galleon measures 46
feet long, 18 feet wide, with 40-foot masts,
and is anchored in a 250,000-gallon indoor
lagoon with night sky lighting. Surrounding
the lagoon is a six-sided showroom of
additional “ships.” This is where spectators
watch the action unfold. The elaborate set
provides the backdrop for non-stop action,
comedy, and a little bit of romance.
To set the scene, you, along with the beautiful
Princess Anita and her court, are hostages
to a band of pirates led by the dastardly
Sebastian the Black. Nasty Sebastian will stop
at nothing to plunder, pillage, and rob.
While the show is taking place patrons
are served a sumptuous four course meal
fit for a pirate king. The meal is served
with a garden salad or vegetable soup and
a choice of BBQ pork loin or roasted half
chicken, all served with steamed broccoli
floret and caribbean rice or mashed
potatoes. For dessert enjoy an apple cobbler
with vanilla ice cream with chocolate
and strawberry sauce. Vegetarian meals are
served upon request.
After the feast and climatic battle, stick
around to meet and mingle with the stars of
the show. You will have a chance to get your
favorite pirate’s autograph, or even a picture
or two.
Pirate’s Dinner Adventure has gift cards
available which make great holiday presents.
Call (866) 439-2469 for more details.
Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is located at 7600
Santa Claus in the IE
Tickets are on sale for the 58th Annual Christmas Tree Lane
“Joyous Noel,” presented by Santa Claus, Inc. The fundraising
event takes place at the National Orange Show Events
Center and features a pair of extravagant, holiday galas where
custom designed Christmas trees will be given away in drawings.
Santa Claus, Inc. provided a Merry Christmas for a record
17,000 underprivileged children in the San Bernardino, Colton,
Redlands, and Rialto school districts in December 2009. This
much needed service for families who are often referred to as the
“working poor” was made possible through the very generous
support of local communities and hundreds of volunteers.
Working from January through December year after year
volunteers at Santa Claus, Inc. provide new clothing, new toys
and quality new books, beautiful handmade quilts, afghans and
blankets, and educational materials to children. They also provide
used items, books, and magazines to the parents.
Joyous Noel takes place on two days: Friday, Dec. 3, enjoy a
gourmet dinner at the Black Tie Gala with a live and silent auctions
and dancing until midnight. On Saturday, Dec. 4, is a holiday luncheon
with a silent auction for designer decorated
custom wreaths. Both events feature Macy’s Fashion
Pueblo a
treasure in
the desert
The Inland Empire is rich in traditions
and history. A treasure that
many locals aren’t even aware of,
though is Cabot’s Pueblo Museum,
located in Desert Hot Springs. The handmade
Pueblo is world famous and houses
a museum collection including Native
American pottery and baskets, artifacts
and other treasures.
The story begins in 1883 with Cabot
Yerxa’s birth in the Dakota Territories.
Tour visitors take a look through his
home at artifacts he collected as he
journeyed to Mexico, Alaska, Cuba, and
Paris. He returned from his travels to begin
his “Castle in the Desert” and begin
the founding of Desert Hot Springs.
The museum story also includes
Yerxa’s discovery of the international
award-winning mineral springs and
drinking water, perhaps the greatest natural
resource to the residents of Desert
Hot Springs. During his homesteading
process from 1913-1918 he hand dug
two wells: one hot mineral water, the
other cold spring water.
The museum hosts thousands of
visitors who delight in the history and
connection to the past, making it one
of the most popular attractions in Desert
Children will be pleased by ‘Purse’
The MainStreet Theatre Company begins
its 5th season of professional theatre
for young audiences with Lilly’s Purple
Plastic Purse, a stage adaptation of the popular
books by Kevin Henkes. The production
opens October 2 and runs through October
17 at Rancho Cucamonga’s Lewis Family
Playhouse located at
12505 Cultural Center
Drive.
Lilly’s Purple Plastic
Purse brings Kevin
Henkes’ exuberant
mouse Lilly to the stage.
Lilly loves everything,
including her red boots,
her best friends, and
especially her new purse
which plays music whenever
it is opened.
Lilly is mighty pleased
with her purse, and kids
will love this adaptation of
the works of Kevin Henkes.
The play, for ages 5
and up follows the story
lines of three of Henke’s
much loved books,
Chester’s Way, Julius, Baby of the World, and
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse. The MainStreet
Theatre Company production will bring
Lilly’s world to life in a unique and colorful
production, including several larger than life
dream sequences and a musical score written
specifically for this production.
“Children can relate to the ups and
downs of Lilly’s life. Even though Lilly and
her friends are mice, they have the same
problems and emotions as human children.
They will relate to her jealousy of her new
baby brother, to her arsenal of disguises that
make her feel brave, and to the joy of sharing
her secret language with her best friends. The
adaptation is great because it really captures
childhood in a funny and yet sincere way.
Our team is having a blast creating this wonderful
world,” MainStreet Theatre Company
producer Mireya “Murry” Hepner said.
The six-person cast will play multiple
roles in this whimsical, funny, and sweet production.
Cast members include MainStreet
Theatre Company mainstays Emily Eiden
(last seen as the “nice” stepsister in Cinderella)
as Lilly and Reggie De Leon (Cinderella,
A Year With Frog & Toad) as Chester. Max
Grodenchik, a veteran of stage and screen,
will portray both Lilly’s father and teacher
Mr. Slinger. MainStreet Theatre Company
newcomers Robin Becker, Amanda Pajer,
and Max Lawrence round out the cast.
Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, appropriate
for ages five years and up, runs Oct. 2-17
on Saturday at 1pm and 4pm, and Sunday
t Artist showcase
Theater & Arts
The Wilderness at the End of the Road
Artist explores the beauty
of California’s wild places
Where the pavement ends and
nature begins is artist Tony
Caltabiano’s domain. Caltabiano’s
“Wilderness” showcase at the
Fontana Art Depot Gallery depicts
the mystery of California’s dwindling
natural landscape using a combination
of photography and painting “to capture
the unique nuances of the area, portraying
them in a haunting and spiritual
light,” Caltabiano said.
“Southern California is where I grew
up, and I am drawn to the distinct
species and topology of the area. I like
the idea that I can walk in an area that
hasn’t changed in thousands of years.”
Caltabiano still lives in California
and currently teaches digital photographic
processes while finishing his Masters of Fine
Arts at Azusa Pacific University. Caltabiano’s
work has been shown in many locations
around southern California, as well as in
Miami and New York.
“Wilderness” will open the week of October
4 at the Fontana Art Depot Gallery.
Caltabiano will personally showcase the
exhibit at the Fontana Arts Depot Gallery’s
Family Art Night on Friday, Nov. 5.
Since he was young, Caltabiano has been
interested in the California Wilderness.
“Growing up in suburban southern California,
I longed for a natural landscape I didn’t
know,” he said. “I began to explore
some of the less known wilderness areas
on the fringes of urban sprawl.”
The art itself is otherworldly and
haunting, using stark color to give the
landscape an almost surreal quality.
Much of this is due to the way Caltabiano
photographs “with medium and
large format film cameras, several of
which are over half a century old,” he
said. The lenses and technique are important,
“lenses begin to gain a unique
‘feel’ and ‘look’ to them as they wear,
which yields a humility - and humanity
- to the image that cannot be found in
newer, modern optics,” he said.
Adding to the photograph, Caltabiano
will often paint into the image, “further
pushing the distinction between realities,”
he said.
The “Wilderness” exhibit is at the Art
Depot Gallery from Oct. 4 to Nov. 26. For
Garden railroad show brings
the excitement of miniature
locomotives to the Fairplex
The Southwest Garden Railroad Show will again spread the fun
and excitement of garden railroading at The Fairplex in Pomona.
With their garden railroad and the train museum, it is without a
doubt the best place to hold such an event.
Trains fascinate those of all ages. Many of us have a train story to
share, such as the memory of riding a train, playing with a train or
of a relative that worked for the railroad. Trains touch the heart of
almost everyone.
The Southwest Garden Railroad Show will be held Nov. 6-7 from
9am to 4pm.
The Fairplex Garden Railroad is considered the oldest and possibly
the largest miniature railroad of its kind in the United States and possibly
the world. The railroad began as a special static exhibit for the
third Los Angeles Fair in 1924. It soon became a small, hand built,
operating miniature train, in true 1/2 inch scale. The small railroad
continued to grow and in 1935 moved out of the Fair’s tent to its present
outdoor location. In May of 1997, with the help of members of a
local garden railroad club, the original 1/2 inch scale was replaced with
what is referred to as G gauge in the hobby of model railroading, and
renovation of the miniature railroad began.
The Fairplex is also home of a railroad museum with a great collection
of equipment and will be open during the show. The Railway and
Locomotive Historical Society is a national organization founded in
1921. The society’s work is devoted to the collecting and preservation
of all types of railroad memorabilia and the sharing of the members’
railroad interests.
G-gauge train is one of the larger sizes of model trains. Typically,
they are placed in a garden outdoors. Numerous arboretums across the
country now boast a garden railroad. Last year alone, Garden Railroad
Magazine reported that 35 new public garden railroads were
built around the country. Epcot at Disney World has had one for a
number of years.
The best displays in the country, built by local clubs and hobbyists,
will be available for viewing. They show the skills of master
craftsmen in all aspects of scenery, custom buildings, and model
railroading.
For kids 16 and under admission is free. Adults are $10
or $18 for a two day pass. The Fairplex is located at 1101 W.
McKinley Ave. in Pomona. IER
become a teacher there, and then leaves to become the governess
of Rochester’s ward at Thornfield Manor, where mystery and
intrigue abound. This intense love story of Jane and Rochester is
complemented with the humorous antics of Rochester’s household
help. The music is classic in the style of “Les Miserables” or “Jekyll
and Hyde” with soaring ballads and large ensemble numbers,
including “Maybe Love,” “Common Ground,” “Prosperity’s Got
A Price,” “Two Gentle Eyes,” and “The Moors Will be Calling.”
Still required reading in many schools, this musical treatment
intends to re-popularize the story, adding songs that will become
popular favorites. The music is by Jerry Williams, international
symphony conductor and Music Director for Donny/Marie Osmond
productions, with book by Patricia York, adapted for stage
by Jan Duncan. This new treatment is not to be confused with the
Public Utilities Savings
Pledge to Make a Difference
The best way to get anything
done is by working together.
Riverside Public Utilities is
looking for your help to reduce
the energy demands in the City of
Riverside.
The state of California requires
that utility companies reduce their
overall energy consumption by 10%
over 10 years. To do that, Riverside
Utilities is looking toward customers
to take steps to reduce their energy
usage around the house and at work.
One of the easiest ways to do your
part and reduce energy consumption
is to “Do The Twist,” and switch
out your standard incandescent light
bulbs with energy-efficient Compact
Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) in
each light socket inside and outside
your home.
Not only do CFLs offer great
lighting quality, they are easy to install
and offer big energy savings. In
fact, the CFLs you twist in will use
about 75% less electricity than your
standard incandescent light bulbs.
Plus CFLs can last up to 10 times
longer. That can save you about $60
in electricity costs over each CFL’s
lifetime.
After you “Do The Twist,” make
sure to log on to GreenRiverside.com
and click the link to Energy Star’s
“Change a Light, Change the World”
program and take the pledge to
support saving energy and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
CFL Facts: If every American
home replaced just one light bulb with
an Energy Star-rated CFL, the amount
of energy saved could power 3 million
homes for one year, and prevent greenhouse
gases equivalent to the emission
of more than 800,000 cars. IER
Miley Cyrus and producer John Shanks for
her upcoming album. In the new millennium
Poison’s music has been featured in such
big screen flicks as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,”
“Grandma’s Boy” and “Deuce Bigelow-European
Gigolo.” They continue to be one of
the industry’s top grossing concert attractions
and their “20 Years of Rock” CD was a bona
fide Top 20 smash.
Michaels has also produced and written
material for other artists including
Stevie Nicks. He wrote and produced
the song “Love’s a Hard Game to Play”
which appeared on Nicks’ platinum album
“Timespace: The Best Of Stevie Nicks.”
More recently Michaels could be heard
providing background vocals along with Phil
Vassar on the Kenny Chesney/Uncle Kracker
duet single “Last Night Again.”
Always creating, Michaels formed a film
production company with actor Charlie
Sheen. The partnership ultimately led to
Michaels writing, directing and starring in
several films including “A Letter From Death
Row” which he executive co-produced with
Sheen.
As an actor, Michaels has made regular
appearances on such hit television shows as
“Yes Dear,” “Martial Law,” “The Chris Isaak
also co-hosted “Access Hollywood” and been
a judge on the wildly popular “Nashville
Setting his musical sights beyond Poison,
Michaels released his debut solo album
“Songs of Life” in 2003 followed by the
rootsy, Americana flavored sophomore record
“Freedom of Sound” in 2005 and “Rock My
Michaels will release his autobiography,
“Roses and Thorns: The Rock ‘n’ Roll
constantly with his solo band.
“I would play music whether I made it in
the industry or not,” Michaels told a journalist
and it’s that commitment to his art that
continues to keep him at the forefront of the
early reading and how to incorporate books
into their daily routines. The event will also
focus on the importance of the parents’ role
to read early and read aloud to their sons
and daughters.
“Current research overwhelmingly supports
the importance of facilitating early
and emerging literacy skills in preschool-age
children as a critical foundation for literacy
development,” Karen Scott, Executive Director
of First 5 San Bernardino, said. Studies
have shown that children who are read to
often are more successful in school, helps
with their brain stimulation and builds their
self esteem and listening skills.
Research shows that a child’s brain develops
most dramatically in the first five years
and what parents and caregivers do during
these years to support their child’s growth
will have a meaningful impact throughout
life. Based on this research, California voters
passed Proposition 10 in 1998, adding a 50
cents-per-pack tax on cigarettes to support
