WEEK 13 · FRIDAY 23 NOVEMBER 2012
INTER-HOUSE COMPETITION
Mrs Allan and I organised a highly competitive contest to celebrate the end of exams. The afternoon was fi lled with lots of
fun activities such as chopstick challenge, pea shooting, pictionary, skittles and straws, tennis ball throw and the hugely
popular chocolate game! At the end of the afternoon, all the houses gathered together in the hall for the fast-paced final
quiz of the day (general knowledge questions asked to each year group) where there was loud cheering (and shrieking)
from all four corners of the room. There was ‘Eurovision style’ scoring on the projector and huge excitement as the girls
waited for the winning house to be revealed; which this year was Wilberforce.
Miss Natalie Owen – Class 4 Teacher
RUNNING CLUB
Twenty-two girls
from Classes 6
and 7 signed up
for Running club
before half-term,
and we have now
had three training
sessions. The
girls seem to be
enjoying their
Friday morning
runs, and are looking forward to Friday 7 December, when
there will be a special Christmas-themed session. Girls are
encouraged to come along wearing Christmas accessories
(Santa hats, tinsel, reindeer ears, etc!).
Mrs Jenny Wood – ‘Runs like the wind’
SPORTS NEWS
Inter-house Netball: Unfortunately the Class 4 and 6
matches were cancelled due to the rain, but I will let you know
when and where they will be held next week. (A massive
thank you to all of the Class 4 mothers who helped to rescue
us all from the rain and bring us back to school).
Hockey: We will be starting hockey in some of the lessons
next week with all year groups. Please ensure your
daughter has her mouthguard and shin pads. We will not
be playing matches until next term so they don’t need the
new hockey tops and skirts – normal PE kit will be fi ne.
Mrs Kath Atkinson – Head of Sport
NOTES FROM THE HEAD
The Class 5 play is next week. I always love younger siblings
coming along to enjoy the fun, but I’d be grateful if they
could come to the dress rehearsal on Wednesday at 2.00.
Cycle training for Class 6 takes place next week. May
I remind you that bicycles should not be left at school
overnight or over the weekend unless they are fi rmly
locked and secured. We have immovable bike racks at the
bottom of the garden by the fl ag pole.
A REELY FUN DAY
As always, we are hugely looking forward to St Andrew’s
Day on Friday 30 November. Please remember to come into
school in as much tartan as you like and be prepared for
some reeling. Hot chocolate and shortbread will be in plentiful
supply. There could be a prize for the best-dressed Scot!
Mrs Carole Jenkinson – Headmistress
HEADMISTRESS AWARD
This week I am delighted to announce that my
Headmistress Award goes
to Molly Jaques (7N) who
recently appeared in a
fantastic production of ‘The
Sound of Music’ at the
Hurlingham Club. Molly gave
an outstanding performance
as Brigitta (one of the
children in the Von Trapp
family) and delighted the audience with her excellent
acting and singing ability. Well done, Molly!
MATHS MASTERCLASS
Four of us from Class 7 set off on Wednesday to go to a
Maths Masterclass, run by the Royal Institution. We were
lucky enough to have
Dr James Grime from
Cambridge University come
in to speak to us about
codes and code breakers.
He taught us about the
history of codes starting with
the Spartans, before moving
onto Julius Caesar and we eventually reached the Germans
with their precious machine, the ‘Enigma’ which had such
complicated wiring that each time you typed “A” it would turn
into a different letter. James had with him an original, fully
working Enigma machine that was 76 years old! We had a
chance to crack codes ourselves before returning home.
