UPPER SCHOOL · WEEK 7 · FRIDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2013
BiE READATHON
We were overwhelmed by the wonderful success of the Sponsored
Readathon. Brothers, sisters, grannies and parents generously
sponsored the girls during the Christmas read. A fantastic sum of
£8,397.35 was raised in total. Class 4E read the most books with an
amazing average of 9.69 books each. It was a tight finish as to which
House raised the most money but Shaftesbury won, with a total
raised of £2,198.60, closely followed by Nightingale with £2,100.06,
Bolingbroke £2,051.35 and Wilberforce £2,047.34. In addition to this
27 girls raised over £100 each (see picture, which should include
Poppy Brookes, who was away on Monday). What a tremendous
effort by everyone, but more importantly, the girls were pleased
they were doing something to make a difference. I am enormously
grateful to all the parents and teachers for their support.
Katharine Colquhoun – Principal
SPORTS NEWS
Garden House Cross-Country: Last Friday 15 girls from
Classes 4, 5 and 6 represented Broomwood at the annual
Garden House Cross
Country match against
seven other schools.
Despite not putting
forward a Class 3 team
this year, Broomwood
managed to fi nish 2nd
overall (beaten to 1st
place by just one point!)
with the Class 5 team placing second overall, and the
Class 4 and Class 6 teams fi nishing fi rst! Well done to all
of the competitors, but special mention must go to Clarissa
Nicholls for winning the Class 6 race by a considerable
margin and also to Emily Callaghan for running an
excellent race.
Mini Marathon: Last Sunday a group of ten girls from
Running Club (along with Emily Kate Marchand from Class
4) took part in the London
Mini Marathon trial event
in Battersea Park. Lucy
McCreery and Emily Kate
Marchand ran in the U11
Fun Run, and nine other
Class 6 and 7 girls ran in
the U13 Trial event. All of
the girls ran very well, but
special mention must go to
our top three fi nishers from Broomwood: Clarissa Nicholls
who came 8th, Rosanna Brockbank who came 10th and
Gina Marchand who came 11th. Their achievement is
particularly impressive, given that they were racing against
competitors a year older than them and in a very strong
fi eld. Well done to all of the girls who took part.
Jenny Wood – Running Coach
INTERHOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION
I really enjoyed leading Shaftesbury in the House Music Competition. On the afternoon all the houses sounded good and
everyone had fun singing. The soloists were all excellent and got a lot of applause. Well done to Wilberforce for winning.
Dilly Warburton – Music Captain (Shaftesbury House)
SHORT STORY COMPETITION
I would like to encourage everyone to take part in the BBC
Radio 2 Short Story Competition. We have some fantastic
writers within the school; it would be lovely to see their
stories getting the recognition they deserve. The winners
are invited to The Hay on Wye Literary Festival, and prizes
include stacks of books the size of Chris Evans! The girls
should write a story in 500 words and submit it via the
website. For more information look at the following link:
THE COLDEST JOURNEY
You may already know that we are sponsoring Sir Ranulph
Fiennes and his team as they walk across Antarctica to
conquer the last great polar challenge. We waved them off
back in December as they left London on SA Agulhas.
As a sponsor we are supplied with educational resources
which include worksheets, experiments and primary
scientifi c data which match curriculum needs at every
level; this will involve all the girls in a ‘hands on’ nature with
this momentous journey.
The girls are very excited to be supporting the expedition
and are communicating with the team (in particular Mary
Mouse) via their blog which can be found at http://www.
thecoldestjourney.org/home/blog
Do check out the website and follow them with us.
We’ll post more news as and when. http://www.
