WELCOME BACK AND
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Dear Parents 9 January 2012
I am delighted to welcome you back and I do hope that you have had an enjoyable Christmas and New
Year break. The school is up and ready for us and I am happy to report that all of the staff are back refreshed for
another term; it is a pleasure to be able to work alongside such an enthusiastic team. We welcome some new faces
to the Upper School; Mrs Kathryn Atkinson joins us as Head of Sport and Mrs Fiona Hicks-Beach joins us to assist
in The Library. We are also very excited to welcome Miss Jane Bailey, Miss Maddy Watchirs Connolly, Miss Sophie
Hutchinson and Miss Eloise Smail who will be assisting the teachers this term. I hope the photos below will enable you
to recognise them around the school and please do make them welcome. Can I remind you that the assistants are
available for babysitting and that their mobile telephone numbers will be on the website as soon as possible.
The beginning of this term is of course largely dedicated to the 11+ day and boarding exams, some 13+ entry
exams, particularly to day schools as well as scholarship attempts. Some of our girls have already had two days of
testing and the term has not even begun! Good luck to all those girls taking exams, and to their parents who have to
sit and wait on the sidelines. I do think this is often the harder role. There will be parent-teacher interviews for Class
5, 7 and 8; these will be subject based interviews and you will have the opportunity to talk to all of your daughter’s
teachers, and I would recommend counting on spending about an hour here. There will only be one night per year
group, so please make a note of it as soon as possible. There will also be an information evening on secondary
schools for all Class 5 parents; this will be held on Tuesday 24 January at 7pm. On a lighter note we can look forward
to Class 6’s play of ‘Oklahoma’ and Class 4’s rendition of ‘Jerusalem Joy’. Both these productions promise to be
fabulous; do check the website and the term dates for the key information.
February sees the return of our French pen-pals from the Ecole Dupanloup in the suburbs of Paris. All of our
Class 6 girls may go home at 4.00 that week in order to show their French friends the sites, and have a chance to get
to know them better before the return visit in June to Paris. In sport, I know that the hockey teams are looking forward
to some exciting matches including a fair few Saturday matches – do look out for these. Nearly 30 girls are off to Serre
Chevalier at the end of term for our increasingly popular ski trip – the school will certainly feel quiet without them.
On a boring note, Wandsworth Council are undertaking some major road works along various parts of
Nightingale Lane starting from Thursday 26 January. They say it could go on for 26 weeks so please be patient when
negotiating dropping off and collection – it could be a testing time!
Here’s to a very happy new term for all of us.
