DRESSED UP TO THE NINES!
The annual book week character dress up parade was held on Wednesday morning in playground at 50NL. In front of an
enthusiastic and happy crowd of paparazzi (mummies and daddies), the children were able to show off some wonderful
costumes from a kaleidoscope of book characters. It was fun for everyone, including some teachers who got into the spirit
of the day. Thank you to all who prepared and made outfi ts for the children.

Fireworks: Keep an eye out for the
fi rework ticket application form which
has been sent home in the children’s
backpacks today. The forms should be
handed into your school offi ce no later
than Wednesday 12 October together
with payment and an envelope with your child’s name
and class clearly marked on the front.
Cake Sale: It’s time to start baking again. Please try
to fi nd time to make something for next
Thursday’s (13 October) Cake Sale. There
is always a fantastic selection of homemade
cup cakes, cookies, biscuits and
cakes for the children to choose from. The
list is endless and the choice is yours!
Please remember the school has a STRICT
NO NUT POLICY and all the ingredients must be clearly
labelled. Could all Lower School children bring in 50p
which will enable them to have a cake at break time and
also have a guess in our fabulous cake competiton. Thank
you to everyone who has offered to help at the various
sales. Happy baking!
Gift Wrap: Don’t forget to order your gift wrap before 20
October. A copy of the order form is available at school
offi ces should you require one.

POETRY RECITAL
On Monday
the children
in Classes
1 to 3 took
part in the
fi nals of
the poetry
competition.
Heats were
held the
previous
week in the
individual
classrooms,
following which the fi nalists were chosen. (A special
mention to 1N, every child in the class recited a poem in
the heats! Well done!) The children had a choice of three
poems to learn by heart, read with expression and maybe
even add one or two actions! The standard was extremely
high and it was a very difficult decision for the judges, Mrs
McDonald and Mrs Bedi. But winners there had to be!
Congratulations to Evie Acratopulo (Class 1), Nell Hickson
(Class2) and Daisy Livesey (Class3). A fabulous effort by
all other fi nalists: Emma Martin, Jack Scott, Archie Barns,
Elodie Davies, Xavier Clifford, Isabel Lucas and Emily
Jepson. Such a wonderful afternoon!

CHURCH CORNER
Thursday 13 October: Next week is the fi rst of our Lower
School only services this term. Class 3S are very much
looking forward to singing and acting the story of “Jesus
collects His disciples” starting at 8.45. All are welcome to
attend and coffee/tea will be served from 8.30.
BROOMWOOD IN ETHIOPIA
Here’s a photograph of a fairly typical classroom in Ethiopia
– this one’s in a primary school in the town of Debre
Zeyit, south-east of Addis Ababa. Not great, is it?
Last week, Sir Malcolm and Lady Colquhoun and I,
accompanied by Chris Grant of Link Ethiopia, visited the
country – as many of you will know, Broomwood Hall has
been looking at the possibility of setting up a school in
Ethiopia, one of the world’s poorest countries, so we went
out there to talk to people, to look at schools, and to learn
what we could before embarking on such a serious venture.
Can we do it? Yes, I think so. And what an amazing venture
it promises to be. With this week’s newsletter, you’ll find
attached a letter from Lady Colquhoun, and a separate sheet
of Questions & Answers which I hope will give you a better
idea of what this is all about. Read these please, and let me
or Caroline Williams have your feedback. For this to succeed,
it’s essential we have your backing and enthusiasm.

ADMISSIONS
We’re delighted to offer a warm welcome back to Mrs Alison
Melrose who after a year off has taken up the post of Director
of Admissions for Broomwood Hall and Northcote Lodge.
SPORTS UPDATE
Football: The Class 3 boys played against Thomas’s
Clapham on Friday 30 September at Trinity Fields. In
brilliant sunny weather, our boys played top quality football
and should be applauded for their efforts.
Results as follows:
A-team: won 3-1
B-team: won 2-0
C-team won 5-1
D-team lost 2-5

PIZZA EXPRESS TRIPS
Over the next two weeks the Preps will be visiting Pizza
Express and making their own pizza to continue their topic
of celebrations this term. It is one of the highlights of the
term for the Preps and the teachers too!

EPSOM CHOIR FESTIVAL
On Tuesday, eighteen of
our Class 3s and fifteen
GR children were lucky
enough to take part in
a singing festival with
eight other Prep Schools
at Epsom College. The
children worked hard
throughout the day on
perfecting a selection of
songs, all based around the theme of ‘family’. The children
were also given a concert by a number of soloists and two
choirs, all of whom were students from the college. The
Girl’s choir was particularly impressive! The day ended with
a grand performance of the songs they had learnt in front of
their parents. It was exhausting, exciting and inspiring!
