reduce emissions by downsiz<strong>in</strong>g the eng<strong>in</strong>e mass<br />
and weight, while <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the overall eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />
performance; evolved electronic systems, to manage<br />
and control the eng<strong>in</strong>es’ activities and performance;<br />
hybrid eng<strong>in</strong>es, to reduce fuel consumption and to<br />
beg<strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g the circulation of vehicles that are<br />
not dependent only on endothermic eng<strong>in</strong>es and to<br />
open up the path towards future electric vehicles.<br />
The fast evolution of the new telematics technologies<br />
provides cities with evolved systems for <strong>in</strong>telligent<br />
traffic management. With over 20 years of<br />
experience, Tor<strong>in</strong>o and <strong>Piemonte</strong> have positioned<br />
the region as a frontrunner <strong>in</strong> this technology. This<br />
know-how dates back to the 1980s with the very first<br />
<strong>in</strong>telligent traffic light systems connected directly with<br />
the public transportation system’s vehicles to assure<br />
their priority at the major <strong>in</strong>tersections. It cont<strong>in</strong>ues
today, with new advanced technological devices <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong>side the vehicles enabl<strong>in</strong>g them, dur<strong>in</strong>g a trip, to<br />
enterta<strong>in</strong> a dialogue with systems and <strong>in</strong>frastructures outside the vehicles, and therefore allow<strong>in</strong>g the drivers to<br />
ga<strong>in</strong> real time <strong>in</strong>formation on traffic conditions, congestions, queues, road blocks and works <strong>in</strong> progress.<br />
In 2006, dur<strong>in</strong>g the Tor<strong>in</strong>o W<strong>in</strong>ter Olympic Games, the system for the <strong>in</strong>telligent management of the urban mobility<br />
was expanded and, therefore, enabled management and control of traffic outside the city limits, up to the Olympic<br />
mounta<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS): outstand<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>in</strong> <strong>Piemonte</strong><br />
