Welcome to our April issue and with Spring finally here, things are 

definitely on the up! We can’t believe that we are already into our fifth 

issue of the Shawclough/Healey magazine! 

As we look back on almost three years of Streetwise magazines and the 

launch of the first issue of Milnrow/Newhey issue in May 2012, we have 

reflected on how the magazine has developed over this time. Our vision 

was always to produce a publication which reflected local life and the 

community in which we live and over time we have built strong relations 

with many local groups and individuals who now send us information 

on a monthly basis. 

As the Shawclough/Healey magazine is our most recent magazine, we 

encourage residents to get in touch if they want to publicise any local 

event which we will include for free. 

Yet again this month we have our usual features which include a tasty 

recipe provided by Andrew Nutter from Nutter’s restaurant, Norden, the 

Police Update, a bumper double page of local events taking place in 

the Rochdale area and another of Alan Valentine’s walks. 

We receive feedback from local residents each month and the overriding 

comment is that not only do they enjoy reading the various community 

features but that they feel comfortable contacting the local businesses 

which advertise in the magazine and trust them to carry out jobs both 

inside and outside their homes. 

It’s important that we support our local businesses as much as we can,

Asparagus Mille Feuille with Salt and 

Vinegar Sauce 

Why not give this dish a try – Ideal as a light 

lunch or dinner party starter and if salmon isn’t 

available then it works with cod too! 

Ingredients Serves 4 

200g puff pastry 

1 egg yolk 

1 tablespoon olive oil 

4 shallots – chopped fine 

1 clove garlic – chopped 

200g young spinach leaves – washed 

Pinch ground nutmeg 

For the Sauce 

200ml white wine 

250ml white wine vinegar 

2 tablespoons whipping cream 

200g chilled salted butter – 

diced 

Flesh 1 beef tomato – diced 

1 tablespoon chopped chives 

Method 

1) Roll out the puff pastry ¾cm thick and cut into rectangles. 

2) Brush with the egg yolk and mark into diamonds. 

Bake in a hot oven 180°c for 10 minutes until risen and 

golden brown. 

3) Heat the olive oil and sauté the shallots and garlic together 

until softened. Add the spinach and wilt. Season to taste with 

salt, pepper and nutmeg. 

4) Place the white wine and vinegar in a pan – bring to the 

boil and reduce by half. Add the cream and reduce again, 

finally add the diced butter bit by bit until its emulsified. 

5)Add the diced tomato and chives and season. Do not boil 

the sauce otherwise it will separate. 

6) Blanch the asparagus in some boiling salted water for 2-3 

minutes until a la dente. 

7) When ready to serve, cut each rectangle in half length ways, 

place the spinach in the base of half of the puff pastry pieces, 

arrange the asparagus on top, 

pour over the sauce and finally 

position the reserved lid.

Local Area Forum:- 

The next Shawclough/Healey Local Area Forum will be held on 16th 

July, 6.30pm at Syke Community Base, Fieldhouse Industrial Estate, 

Fieldhouse Rd, Rochdale, OL12 0AA. 

Guided Walks & Tours 

Sadly, due to insufficient funding the Syke Community Base is closing 

and a lot of the services that were on offer will be lost. However, the 

Walk and Talk group will continue to meet, Monday at 1.00 pm and 

Friday 10.00am at Syke Methodist Chapel where there will be toilet 

facilities and hot drinks and socialising after the walks . The nearest bus 

service, 464, runs every quarter of an hour is on Whitworth Road 

getting off at Healey Surgery and walking up Crowshaw Drive and down 

Wood Hey Grove to Dewhurst road. The 449 leaves Rochdale 

interchange at quarter to the hour and arrives at Newark Road at five 

minutes to the hour. It is just a short walk to the Chapel from there. 

The venue change will be Monday 27th April. Until then we continue 

to meet at Syke Base.

Springhill Hospice Events 

24th April - Women of Rochdale 2015 

24th April marks the event of the year for women in Rochdale, it's the 

annual celebration of women's achievements in the borough, 

culminating in the announcement of this year's Woman of the Year, or 

in the case of last year's winners - Women of the Year. Wendy Mills 

and Joy Whitworth won the award jointly last year for their fundraising 

work in the borough and will present the award at the luncheon held in 

the Great Hall at Rochdale's beautiful town hall, to this year's successful 

winner. Tickets for this year's event are £37.00 each and include a 3 

course luncheon, they are available by contacting Melanie Caffrey

closed on the 27th of March. 

Hospice to Hospice Walk 2015 - 26th April 2015 

14500 steps to caring. Hundreds of walkers from Springhill Hospice 

and Dr Kershaw's Hospice will be taking part in the annual 7.25 mile 

walk. The aim of the day is not only to raise much needed funds for 

the Hospices but also to raise awareness of hospice care in general. 

This family friendly event has Springhill walkers setting off the from 

Hospice and walking to circular route, stopping off at Dr Kershaw's at 

for a cuppa before setting off back on the second half of the journey, 

back to the warmth of Springhill Hospice and a welcoming Springhill 

Smile. 

This year the Hospice are hoping to increase their numbers from last 

years 200 walks to 300 supporters setting off from Springhill and with 

last year event raising £7,500, they've also set their sights a little 

higher on £8,200 which represents the funding that is needed to keep 

the Hospice doors open for 1 day! 

Springy the Frog will be at Springhill on the day and promises to meet 

and greet Springhill's supporters as they arrive at Dr Kershaw's too.

Go Green 2015 – Friday 15th May 

Last year the good people of Rochdale went GREEN for Springhill 

Hospice, raising over £11,000 in one day by wearing, eating, 

drinking and event gunging the colour green for the day. This year, 

we're hoping the Borough will show even greener support on Go 

Green 2015. SAVE THE DATE: 15/5/15 - Friday 15th 2015. Get in

Springhill Country Fete- Sunday 7th June 

This year Springhill Hospice are celebrating the summer with a good 

old fashioned, traditional family fete. Rochdale Riding Club on Roch 

Valley Way play hosts for this spectacular fun day aimed at to give a 

great day out for everyone from tots to toddlers, mums to 

grandmas.....and great grandmas too! 

The event is on Sunday 7th June 10 am to 3 pm with everything 

from a traditional fun fair, donkey rides, wild life, circus workshops 

and Punch and Judy, a craft market and stalls and community 

participation events including a dog show, home bake and preserve 

competition. There's something for everyone! Keep an eye out in

Midnight Walk 2015 – Saturday 4th July 

In the final planning stages this is going to be an event not to 

miss! It involves 10 km and very special costumes. Date for your

MAN dIES AFTER AN ATTACK IN ROCHdALE 

Just after 12.30am on Thursday 26th March officers were 

called to the Mucky Duck pub in Drake Street following reports 

that a man had been found collapsed outside the pub. On 

arrival, a twenty eight year old man, who has now been 

formally identified as Adam Nightingale, was found with head 

injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly died a short time 

later. A thirty eight year old man was arrested on suspicion of 

murder and a thirty one year old man on suspicion of 

attempting to pervert the course of justice. Anyone with any 

information should phone the police on 101 or the 

independednt charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 

0800 555 111. 

GOOd NEWS 

In the 12 months to March 2015, total Crime in the 

Rochdale area was down on previous year’s figures by 

10%. For the same time period in the Rochdale North 

Neighbourhood, Criminal Damage and Arson were down 

by 2%, Drug Offence were also down by 26% whilst 

Burglary is down by 3%. 

dOMESTIC BURGLARY 

Ashmount Drive: Unknown offender/s 

approach the address and repeatedly kick 

the side door to gain access into the 

property, once inside they conduct an 

untidy search and make off. 

New Street: Unknown offender/s enter an insecure property, 

remove car keys and house keys and lock the door behind 

them. Offender/s then make off in the victim’s vehicle. 

Whitworth Road: An unknown offender gains access into the 

rear yard of the property, climbs up the drain pipe and reaches 

through the bathroom window to clear the window sill. The 

offender is disturbed by the victim and so climbs back down 

the drain pipe and makes off. 

Joy Street: Unknown offender/s approach the property and use 

an unknown implement to try and force the handle and lock 

off the front door. Offender/s are unsuccessful and make off. 

vEHICLE CRIME 

Bond Street: Unknown offender/s approach a parked vehicle 

and use an sharp implement to puncture the front nearside 

tyre and remove the hub cap. 

Ashmouint Drive: Following a recent burglary offender/s 

reattend the address and use the car keys they stole previously 

to steal the victim’s vehicle. 

Pavilion Close: When the victim returns to her home address 

she finds a vehicle blocking her driveway and so parks round 

the side of her property. When the victim returns to her car the 

next day she finds that all four of her tyres have been slashed. 

Gale Street: Unknown offender/s approach an unattended 

vehicle and damage the rear of the vehicle by unknown 

means.

Thirty Years a Wanderer 

Musing over a map and a glass of wine one evening I came to thinking about how 

my hill walking days had started.... 

I remember driving from my Tottington home to work in Burnley 

and looking across to Knowl Hill from Ramsbottom on the many 

trips I made. Eventually a seed planted itself in my mind, what 

would it be like on those wild moors, would I live if I walked to 

the top of its then seemingly impossibly remote vastness. Well 

I was young (ish) and had never walked in the country at that 

time. 

So it was that eventually I risked it and set off from the car park 

at Owd Betts after work on a wild wet late autumn afternoon 

and couldn't have really 

picked a worse day to start 

my new hobby, or so most 

experts would say. 

Puffing and panting I 

realised soon that I would 

need to practise this new 

adventuring frequently if I 

ever wanted to continue. It 

took me a long time that day 

to reach the summit and the 

view was very poor due to 

the low clouds and drizzle. But something triggered in my mind 

as I looked around the then barren moorland to the north, across 

Hailstorm Hill and the surrounding delphs and bogs. 

I was hooked. Soon I purchased the Ordnance Survey 

Pathfinder Sheet 81/91 and over the years have explored every 

nook and cranny shown thereon. Every marked hill, river, trig 

point, boundary stone, milestone, mast and other named 

feature I have visited and examined. 

It has been a wonder to me that on my travels I find so many 

places devoid of people, it seems as if the great populace of 

the area are unaware of the benefits of getting out and exploring 

these great places on our doorstep. 

Last week I decided on a wild and windy, showery day to retrace 

my first steps (nearly) and headed up Rooley Moor Road to the 

old Cotton Famine Road which led ever upwards past Top Of 

Pike eventually to Top of Leach. The view over Hailstorm Hill 

again inspired me but saddened me a little too as I realised 

more wind turbines would 

be erected here soon. As I 

left I saw two young men 

in a top of the range 

Landcruiser parked on the 

barren old road near Top 

of Leach. They had maps 

and pens in hand. One 

peered through binoculars 

as they no doubt planned 

the routes of roads and the 

positions of future 

turbines. I disturbed them 

when I knocked on the window and asked them if they knew 

the time of the next bus. 'No sorry mate, we don't'. Gets them 

every time that one. Ah well. 

The hailstorm sadly came as I was half way back down the 

road, how nice it would have been if I had then been on 

Hailstorm Hill itself.

BEHIND EVERY GREAT HOLIDAY IS A

Having booked a 4 star hotel for my annual holiday I wanted a 

transfer to the airport to be of an equal standard to start my holiday 

off in style. 

Having not heard of Junction 21 before I saw their advert in ‘Streetwise’ and decided to 

check them out. 

Although some of the other firms had the odd review pasted on their websites, Junction 21 

had nearly a hundred reviews posted through an independent review company. 

Although all of the reviews were great (Junction 21 had an average rating of 4.9 out of 5) 

I have posted one of the more recent ones, I will tell you why below. 

‘’Having seen this company around the airport I decided to give them a try when I next 

travelled and I was really pleased I did. 

I was upgraded from bronze to gold which was a lovely surprise and will always be 

welcomed! I can see why people would opt for that package as the car was impeccable. 

As a whole the service was great and the meet and greet well done and preferable. 

This is a family company and the owner’s son who was my driver was charming. 

I will be using J21 for my next trip for sure’’ 

After reading this review I contacted Junction 21 by phone, the owner, John Byrne, answered 

my call, he offered me a complimentary upgrade from Bronze to the Gold service as it was 

my first booking, indeed he also offered me a small discount if I wanted to pay cash to the 

driver on the day. 

I decided to book online as it was more convenient to book & pay on line using my credit 

card, the process took just 2/3 minutes and the online booking was very easy to do even 

though I am not the best on a computer. 

I have Just travelled with them again using the Bronze service and was amazed at the quality, 

the driver told me that drivers have to work their way up the ladder at Junction 21 and 

that in reality the Bronze drivers are trainee Chauffeurs. 

Junction 21 against other companies, well the difference in quality is like comparing watching 

a colour TV to an old Black & White set.
