COTABATO, Philippines (AFP) — Separatist 

gunmen sacked a southern Philippines hamlet 

and used residents as human shields to escape 

pursuing government forces, according to the 

military. 

About 50 raiders, described by the military as 

Muslim separatists, ransacked grocery shelves 

and stole animals in the village of Basak on Mindanao 

island on Friday, army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel 

Jonathan Ponce told reporters. 

Twenty residents were taken hostage to cover 

the gunmen’s retreat, and “as they fled, the rebels 

set fire to four homes,” Ponce said. 

The hostages were freed unharmed before 

dawn Saturday, he added. There were no reported 

casualties during the raid itself. 

“The rebels knew that we cannot just open fire 

at them if they have civilians as human shields. 

We have rules of engagement that we cannot 

attack rebels holding people as hostages,” Ponce 

said. 

Eid Kabalu, spokesman for the Moro Islamic 

Liberation Front (MILF) confirmed to reporters 

here that the country’s largest Muslim separatist 

guerrilla group was involved, but insisted the raid 

was a settling of scores with a rival Muslim guerrilla 

group, the Moro National Liberation Front. 

Peace talks between the government and 

the MILF collapsed in August last year after the 

Supreme Court blocked a draft peace agreement 

that would have given the Muslim minority control 

over large areas of the southern Philippines. 

The impasse touched off a series of deadly 

MILF raids on communities of Christians who 

now make up the majority in most areas of 

Mindanao, which the Muslims consider as their 

homeland. The fighting displaced about half a 

million people.

“This is a very important moment in human history,” 

Hubble senior project scientist David Leckrone said in 

Houston. “We will rewrite the textbooks at least one more 

time.” 

Earlier this week, San Jose native Megan McArthur, the 

shuttle’s robot arm operator, grabbed the telescope and 

lowered it into the payload bay for the repair work. 

Monday’s was the fifth and final spacewalk for the shuttle 

Atlantis crew, and the final visit by astronauts ever to 

Hubble. 

As the spacewalk drew to a close, Hubble’s chief mechanic, 

John Grunsfeld, accidentally bumped one of the telescope’s 

antennas and knocked off its cap with his backpack. 

Mission Control quickly assured the astronauts the antenna 

was fine. 

The $220 million worth of new instruments should allow 

the telescope to gaze farther back into time — within 500 

million or 600 million years of the first moments of the 

universe. 

Mission Control congratulated the astronauts for successfully 

completing “electronic brain surgery” Monday during 

an initial effort that lasted more than seven hours. 

In addition to the batteries and the sensor, Grunsfeld and 

Andrew Feustel installed steel foil sheets to protect against 

radiation and the extreme temperature changes.

that cheered Manny Pacquiao in his triumphal 

motorcade was Conrado Dimaisip, 37, of Bulacan. 

He was waving a letter at the champ with a plea for 

money for his cancer-stricken wife’s chemotherapy

US Senate passes credit card bill 

Lawmakers in the US Senate have voted 

overwhelmingly in favour of a bill that puts 

new restrictions on the credit card industry. 

The bill would curb sudden interest rate 

increases and hidden fees. 

The industry has warned that the measure 

could backfire, leading banks to issue fewer 

credit cards thus making it harder to get 

credit. 

The bill would mark the first major financial 

reform made by the Obama administration. 

Analysts said it would hurt the profits of 

major credit card issuers such as Citigroup 

and Bank of America. 

The bill must again go before the House 

of Representatives and then be approved by 

President Barack Obama, who is expected to 

sign it into law by the end of the month. 

Edward Yingling, president of the American 

Bankers Association, said the credit card 

bill, if signed into law, would undermine the 

availability of credit. 

‘Reasonable rules’ 

The bill would prevent companies from 

raising interest rates on existing balances 

unless a card holder was 60 days behind, 

and then it would require the rate to be 

restored to its previous level if payments 

were on time for six months. 

Card holders would have to be told of rate 

increases 45 days in advance and it would 

also make it harder for people aged under 

21 to be issued with credit cards. 

“This bill bans unfair rate increases, makes 

companies play by reasonable rules and 

magnifies the fine print so consumers aren’t 

blindsided by their monthly bills,” Democratic 

Senator Richard Durbin said. 

However, there are fears that if penalties 

on riskier borrowers are limited, credit card

Ricky Hatton down twice in the first round before

need anywhere from 5 to 10 trillion dollars. 

No country in the world has this amount at their disposal, 

not even the United States. The 2009 federal budget was 3.4 

trillion dollars. 

The effects of the economic crisis can be minimized, because 

the economic packages that use about 1 trillion dollars each 

time, can in some way amortize the effects of the economic 

crisis. 

At our office, we have known for years about this mortgage 

problem, we have seen people that work at McDonald’s purchase 

one million dollar houses, which didn’t make economic 

sense. 

We at our office, we just didn’t know the extent of the mortgage 

problem, which seem to have involved practically most 

of the mortgage market. 

If you are a taxpayer, you may be wondering, if it is worth to 

bail out the financial system with all of this money. In the last 7 

months, we have seen massive job losses in the United States, 

we lost 500,000 to 600,000 jobs per month. 

The argument is that without bailing out the financial system, 

it is very possible we could have lost even more jobs. 

Without bailing out the financial system, we could have lost 

700,000 to 800,000 jobs per month, or we could have a much 

longer economic recession for years to come. 

The financial system for decades has helped to finance the 

production of goods and services. 

The financial system for decades has helped to create jobs. 

Once the financial system becomes healthy, the financial system 

will go back to doing their job by financing the production of 

goods and services, and helping to create jobs. 

Finally, by bailing out the financial system, of course the 

ordinary citizen will pay more taxes, but in the end, it may help 

to save their own jobs! 

The alternative without bailing out the financial system, is 

of course to pay less taxes, but what is the use of paying less 

taxes, if you may end up losing your own job!

The next step is to acquire a loan will cover the total combined

Please keep in mind that debt consolidation is not always the 

best resolution. The most beneficial conclusions are contingent 

on each individual situation. For example, debt consolidation 

may be the best bet for John Barley-Corn but not the most 

sensible alternative for you. In any case, it is important that you 

speak with a professional on this matter so that you do not wind 

up in an even deeper pit.
