A helpline is an emergency phone
service which links services and resources
to older persons in need of care and
protection. It has proved to be a very
effective tool in empowerment of the poor
& needy. The HelpAge India helpline aims
to respond to calls from older persons in
distress, offering immediate assistance and
linking them to resources for solution of

In the month of December 2010
Shimla Elder’s Helpline has received total
29 calls with different problems and
enquiry about different information
through our Helpline. Out of these calls we
received most of the calls regarding
information about ambulance services,
Health services, social pension and
Physiotherapy service by HelpAge India in
Himachal.

Services
Physiotherapy is the treatment with
physical modalities like heat, cold, mille
ampere electric current and with
therapeutic exercises for physical well
being. Physiotherapy care is fundamental to
ageing care. The physiological changes
result in reduction of muscle power and
tone, reduced range in motion and bone
density. Symptoms include general
weakness, faulty body postures, and
decrease in cardiopulmonary endurance and
reduced exercise tolerance. Apart from
these, conditions like back pain, shoulder
pain and other musculoskeletal conditions,
paralysis and other neurological conditions
which are common in geriatrics can be
managed by physiotherapy. However,
proper knowledge and awareness related
diseases or degenerative diseases may
minimize the time of occurrence and
elderly can live a
meaningful and happy life. Awareness and
proper knowledge may also minimize the
disability and dependency of the elderly.

Condition – B/L O.A Knee joint
Mr. Raman, SWD session of treatment at
HelpAge physio centre at Bhangruttu.
He is a retired govt employee and is living
in Bhangruttu. He came to our centre with
complaining of pain in both knees. He
cannot able to walk properly and difficulty
to climb the stairs.
On observation, swelling and redness on his
both knees. ROM is also affected.

On palpation, tenderness is present at the
medial join line of both knees. He also has
pain during walking .quadriceps Power also
decreased.

Management:-
SWD 15 min on both knees
US 5 min each on medial joint line on both
knees

Home exercise programme
Now patient feels better. He is coming
regularly and following treatment
programme. He is also doing exercises at
home also.

Kullu
Smt Shanti Devi came to our Physiotherapy
centre last month with her neighbour for
her treatment.She is very poor and living in
a kacha house with her husband.Becouse of
her poverty she did not took any treatment
or medicine for herself. After diagnosis we
come to know she is suffering from PA
shoulder and severe Osteoarthritis of knee
joint.She is not giving any history of high
BP. There is no history of fall and
traumatic injury.
On observation stiffness, spasm and
tenderness is found over shoulder joint.
There is also Pain during shoulder
movements.In knee joint during palpation
oedema and tenderness is found .Right knee
is more affected than left. Crepitus sound
is also present. Pain is aggravated after
walking, up stairs.
According to sign and symptoms my aim is
to reduce pain ,oedema,tenderness and
regain mobility functions

HelpAge India physio centre with his wife
and told he is link withed us from last many
years or also sending donation to HelpAge
as for our good work in the field of elder
all over the world..

On observation, DR Madhan is a interesting
person with full of knowledge and with all
his past experience.
As per routine examination there is
tenderness and pain over right elbow and
difficulty in wrist extension or
supnation/prenation. So I start with TENS
and US therapy as under

from kurkushatra univesty and living at
solan in a apartment with his wife happily.
He is suffering from tennis last 3 years
and taking differient medicine or injectable
by orthopedation but there is no
satisfactory response now he is finding
difficulty in activity related to performing

exercise with alternate day US therapy for
20 days. Patient is responding well to
treatment and visiting regular to centre
with feeling of goodness and strengthening
bond or trust with HelpAge. After that
patient had donated 7 pack of wax to the
centre as a purpose to work sociably in
community along with HelpAge India.

Workshop on Development
of ESHG

These funds came from revolving fund.
One of the main aim of the meeting was
to review the SAGP running in the 7
districts of Himachal and to facilitate
the effective implementation of ESHG
which reinforce family and community as
the most suitable place for an elderly
A meeting held was on 13
December 2010 the workshop was
basically on Development of Elders Self
help group . In which Participant was
Elders Self Help Groups members like
community animator, Project manager
etc . The workshop was organised by Mr.
Banolata
General Secretary of Himachal
Harijan Kalyan Sanstha. The significant
or resource persons are Dr. Rajesh
Kumar from HelpAge India , Mr. A.K.
Mahajan from NABARD ,Omkar Ji Distt.
Welfare officer , Dr. Ramesh Gupta
from Animal Husbandry , Mr. Baldari
from KVIC , Mr. Narender from
Horticulture. Our Chief guest was
Honorable Deputy Commissioner Mr.
lead a life of and dignity and self
respect .We are using these meetings
and gatherings for strengthening our
network and setting up our strategy for
our activities implementation for the
coming days. From this exercise we feel
that day by day we are so much more
connected than before with senior
citizens in the city.

At the end of the meeting Dr.
Rajesh kumar gave the special thanks to
the guest came from different
departments and the valuable
information of different schemes given
to the elders.
One Day Workshop for the
Sustainability of MEU
the supporters from different sites to
finally take over the charge of MEU-DST
Pilot Project w.e.f 1 April-2011 and run it
smoothly with the support and co-operation
of the Community under the control and
supervision of Vridh Sewa Samiti,
Basantpur. In this workshop 26 members
from different MEU Sites i.e Basantpur,
Gumma, Sunni and Mashobra along with
members of Vridh Sewa Samiti Basantpur
actively participated. In this one day
workshop some guidelines were finalised
and discussed , some targets were fixed

During the month of December –
2010 all the MEU Sites i.e. Vikas Nagar,
Basantpur, Sunni, Gumma & Mashobra were
regularly visited once in a day every week
and 1686 patients i.e. (760 Male & 926
Female) were attended in general OPD and

referred to MEU-DST Clinical laboratory

MEU-DST Pilot Project Basantpur and had
been in Basantpur w.e.f 5/12/2010 to

7/12/2010 to finalize the process of online
reporting Software. They had rounds of
meetings with MEU Operational Staff both
in office as well as in MEU-Site Vikash
Nagar and Basantpur to improve reporting
on Software to finally submit it for
approval and put in routine operation.
GENERAL HEALTH CHECK-UP
CAMP ON 18 Dec.2010
A small but very attractive multi facilities
General free Health Check Up Camp was
held on 18th Dec.2010 at Mata Sheetla
Mandir in Village Sayari about 85km away
from Basantpur .This Camp was organized
with the co-operation and support of HP
State Sr. Citizen Forum, Shimla and Sr.
Citizen Association Sayari . Mr. M.R
Thakur, President HP State Sr. Citizen
forum Inaugurated the camp .The General
Secretary Mr. D.R. Verma and Secretary
Mr. Ratneshwar of the forum along with
all the Executive Body Members of Sr.
Citizen Association Sayari were also
present. Sound arrangements for
refreshment and Community lager for
patients was also made by local community.
Patient from various Villages/Panchyats i.e
Kala, Chinog, Dhamun Satrol and Patta
Bushahri has come from surrounding areas.
During camp our whole medical team
reached at Sayari around 9:35 AM.
MEU-DST Pilot Project Medical

and Dr Anil Mehta, Medical Officer, Govt.
Ayurvedic Dispensary, Sanket Mochan
Dispensary ,Shima attended 206 (117
Male& 89 Female ) patients in Medical OPD
. Allopathic as well as Ayurvedic medicines
were provided as per wishes of the
patients. Out of 206 patients 49 (21
Male&28 Female) patient were referred to
MEU-DST Lab. Section and their different
free Lab. Tests were conducted. ECG of 7
(4 Male& 3 Female) patient was also
conducted. Besides above 13 (5 Male&8
female) patient were referred to MEU-
DST Physiotherapy section and free
Physiotherapy treatments were provided to
them as per their requirements. Counseling
services to the needy patient were also
provided. People were found praising Help
Age India for its remarkable services in
the vicinity of Shimla and nearby villages.
Many villagers demanded such health camps
at their doorsteps more frequently.

The issue regarding continuation of
the MEU-DST Project was also discussed
with all the renounced persons of the area
as well as the Sr. Citizen Forum and the
Association of Sayari. They all assured to
raise funds for the same. Many local people
pledged to do so for the cause and help of
the elderly of the area. The Health Camp

was closed at 4:30.The details of Camp
were also highlighted by local Press Medias.
