Welcome by the Local Organising Committee It is our pleasure, as hosts, to invite you to the 8th World Congress of the International Cartilage Repair Society, which will be held in sunny Miami, Florida, USA. The venue will allow an environment conducive to after meeting collaborations and furthering international friendships, while at the same time offering state of the art scientific presentations during the formal meeting times. Since the inception of the ICRS, the volume of cartilage research has exponentially grown. This growth has been both in the basic science and clinical arenas. One of the strengths of our society is the rich mixture of basic scientists, clinical scientists, clinicians, and industry – sharing advances across disciplines. This Congress will continue the heritage of information exchange and allow participants to experience the current knowledge set of “all things cartilage”. With the diligent work of the programme committee, this Congress is set to deliver a comprehensive and insightful look at “Cartilage 2009” and a great social programme. Miami is an excellent location, which facilitates easy travel, affordable prices, a wide variety of hotels, as well as a full spectrum of cultural and tourist attractions both for the participant and significant others. Miami offers easy access to a variety of ethnic cuisines, sparkling beaches, interesting architecture and the flavor of the urban hip mixed with southern hospitality: truly a city with something for every taste. 3 Welcome by the Scientific Programme Committee On behalf of the Scientific Programme Committee, we invite you to participate in the upcoming 8th World Congress of the International Cartilage Repair Society taking place in Miami, FL – USA from May 23 – 26, 2009. Our membership and the congresses have grown considerably in size and scope, permitting us to have 4 parallel sessions of oral presentations, in addition to both traditional- and elec-tronic poster sessions, for exciting discussions and an optimal exchange of scientific and clinical information. We added new sessions that highlight the contributions of our colleagues from Japan and South America in dedicated sessions entitled “ICRS meets Japan” and “ICRS meets South America.” The goals of these sessions are to acknowledge and encourage participation from Asia and Latin America and to foster a true global exchange of knowledge to reach our common goal of cartilage repair. We will benefit from new insights and prospects in tackling common problems for managing cartilage injuries. Join us and the rest of the ICRS organization in meeting our colleagues from all over the world and especially from Japan and South America. Amongst the special sessions that will be given by expert faculty are those involving Clinical Outcomes, Durability, Biomechanics and Structure of Repair Tissue, Rehabilitation, Biomaterials, Stem Cells, PRP and other new horizons like Clinical imaging, Controversy of 1 Step vs 2 Step Surgery and the Regulatory Environment. Plenary sessions will highlight long term results in cartilage repair studies and biological repair strategies and mechanisms for tissues other than cartilage in order to learn from other paradigms. Overall the program promises to be expansive in scope and deep in content in order to benefit scientists, clinicians and industry participants.
