1 Welcome by the President We welcome to the 8th ICRS World Congress Miami – ICRS 2009, chaired by Tom Minas and Jack Farr! The mission for this meeting is to create a successful and meaningful experience that will further the society’s educational, social and strategic initiatives. These include: • To present the comprehensive state of art science and clinical management of all cartilage related disorders including repair, reconstruction and arthroplasty. • To expand more clinician involvement including rheumatologists, radiologists, and Orthopaedic surgeons worldwide, • To attract more scientists, graduate students and post doctoral fellows from all continents, • To enhance the long-term vision of the ICRS to recognize its globalization role and to galvanize all disciplines societies and organizations that defines the science and management of cartilage disorders. • To foster collaboration between disciplines of the society, regulatory bodies and industry that will instigate and facilitate more research and development. • To facilitate this mission this meeting’s focus will be on collaboration, patronage, partnerships and sponsorships with other societies, organizations and Industry. To facilitate this mission we are planning simultaneous translation of a part of the meeting to Spanish for the first time. The scientific programme committee, chaired by Michael Buschmann and by Alberto Gobbi have done an outstanding job focusing on innovation and exciting areas of our very dynamic field. Session highlights will include: Sports Injuries & Rehabilitation partnered with FIFA FMARC, Hip Cartilage Interventions, Global Regulatory Challenges, Honorary Lectures, Outcome Tools, Subchondral Physiology, Learning from other paradigms as Heart, Bone Nerve and Cranofacial Cartilage, Tissue Engineering and Gene Therapy, PRP, Stem Cells, Growth Factors, Scaffolds, Imaging as a primary endpoint in Cartilage Repair, Durability of repair and Osteoarthritis, Meniscus, Free Paper- and Poster Sessions. The venue will be the beautiful seaside Hotel Intercontinental in Miami. This is indeed an excellent place to come for an academic meeting and equally as fun for the family to enjoy the weather, the sea and the wonderful attractions of Miami.
