Since the inception of the ICRS, the volume of cartilage research has exponentially
grown. This growth has been both in the basic science and clinical arenas.
One of the strengths of our society is the rich mixture of basic scientists,
clinical scientists, clinicians, and industry – sharing advances across disciplines.
This Congress will continue the heritage of information exchange and allow
participants to experience the current knowledge set of “all things cartilage”.
With the diligent work of the programme committee, this Congress is set to
deliver a comprehensive and insightful look at “Cartilage 2009” and a great
social programme.
Miami is an excellent location, which facilitates easy travel, affordable prices, a
Welcome by the Scientific Programme Committee
On behalf of the Scientific Programme Committee,
we invite you to participate in the
upcoming 8th World Congress of the International
Cartilage Repair Society taking place
in Miami, FL – USA from May 23 – 26, 2009.
Our membership and the congresses have
grown considerably in size and scope, permitting us to have 4 parallel sessions
of oral presentations, in addition to both traditional- and elec-tronic poster sessions,
for exciting discussions and an optimal exchange of scientific and clinical
information.
We added new sessions that highlight the contributions of our colleagues from
Japan and South America in dedicated sessions entitled “ICRS meets Japan” and
“ICRS meets South America.” The goals of these sessions are to acknowledge
and encourage participation from Asia and Latin America and to foster a true
global exchange of knowledge to reach our common goal of cartilage repair. We
will benefit from new insights and prospects in tackling common problems for
managing cartilage injuries. Join us and the rest of the ICRS organization in
meeting our colleagues from all over the world and especially from Japan and
South America.
Amongst the special sessions that will be given by expert faculty are those
involving Clinical Outcomes, Durability, Biomechanics and Structure of Repair
Tissue, Rehabilitation, Biomaterials, Stem Cells, PRP and other new horizons
like Clinical imaging, Controversy of 1 Step vs 2 Step Surgery and the Regulatory
Environment.
Plenary sessions will highlight long term results in cartilage repair studies and
biological repair strategies and mechanisms for tissues other than cartilage in
order to learn from other paradigms.
Overall the program promises to be expansive in scope and deep in content in
order to benefit scientists, clinicians and industry participants. We welcome you
to participate by submitting your abstract to the ICRS abstract online submission
Welcome to Miami
ICRS is going to Miami – Southern
Florida’s ultimate congress destination!
Miami is truly one of the world’s most
vibrant tropical playgrounds. In this
stunning locale, a pulsing nightlife,
brilliant white-sand beaches, and sizzling
culture combine for the perfect
getaway. Miami is a sub-tropical city,
climatically very different from most
places in the USA. The city is a cosmopolitan
playground that attracts more
visitors than any other US destination
Greater Miami’s unique South Florida
flavor beckons travelers from all over
the world for both business and pleasure.
And, whether you’re interested in
the hot pulsating atmosphere of South
Beach, the old-world charm of Coral
Gables, South Miami and Coconut
Grove, or the ultra-luxurious Brickell
area, world-famous restaurants, nightclubs,
shopping and sports activities
abound.
Location of Venue
• Near Bayside Marketplace and only
a few minutes-drive from South
Beach, the Port of Miami, Coconut
Grove, and Coral Gables
• 7.5 miles or 20 minutes drive away
from Miami International Airport
(MIA)
• Overlooking Biscayne Bay, in the
heart of Miami, Florida
Language
The official course language is English.
Simultaneous translation to Spanish of
a part of the meeting.
Ounces System.
Entry Formality / US Visa
The United States Department of State
implemented a major policy change requiring
that everyone seeking a visa to
enter the U.S. schedule a face-to-face
interview at a U.S. Consulate office.
With this in mind, we strongly recommend
that all participants needing to
obtain a visa to attend the Course in
Miami start the application process as
soon as possible. We also advise contacting
the local U.S. Consulate before
beginning the process to obtain and
follow all instructions. Most consulates
and embassies have web sites that can
be accessed through www.state.gov.
This new policy will not affect citizens
from the 27 countries currently participating
in the Visa Waiver Programme
(including, but not limited to Canada,
Japan and many European countries),
who by law do not need visas for tourist
or business travel to the United
States.
The Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) announces implementation of
the Electronic System for Travel Authorization
(ESTA), which will begin to
accept voluntary ESTA applications starting
on August 1, 2008. ESTA is a new
fully automated, electronic system for
screening passengers before they begin
travel to the United States under
the Visa Waiver Program. ESTA applications
may be submitted at any time
prior to travel to the United States, and
VWP travelers are encouraged to apply
for authorization as soon as they begin
to plan a trip to the United States. It
is anticipated that ESTA will become
mandatory for VWP travelers on January
12, 2009. Learn more about ESTA
on the DHS Customs website. www.
Announcing a new aid
for cartilage/bone repair
The TRUFIT CB Plug is a resorbable tissue
generation scaffold designed to repair cartilage
and bone in osteochondral defects. It’s made
with Smith & Nephew POLYGRAFT Technology,
a proprietary, completely synthetic composite
material that mimics surrounding tissue layers.
As soon as it’s implanted, hydrophilic properties allow
the plug to wick up blood, marrow, cells and proteins,
encouraging tissues to grow into the scaffold. After 12
months, the plug is completely resorbed and replaced
with integrated normal hyaline-like cartilage and bone.
