JOB DESCRIPTION: CHILD AND YOUTH WORKER (CYW)<br />
<strong>Give</strong> <strong>Yourself</strong> <strong>Credit</strong> is a Section 23 classroom, which is housed on an independent site and provides an<br />
educational opportunity to youth whose needs cannot be met in the regular school system. The<br />
students attending the program are identified as “high risk” for not being able to achieve their high<br />
school diploma or equivalent.<br />
The job <strong>of</strong> the CYW is to provide care and support to the students in this multidisciplinary educational<br />
setting. The CYW is a key part <strong>of</strong> a team with the teacher and educational assistant and will work with<br />
this team and collaborative partners to share approaches and strategies to aid students in success.<br />
The CYW will be hired, supervised and report to an assigned member <strong>of</strong> the Community Collaborative.<br />
Responsibilities and Principle Activities:<br />
To provide support and interventions to students including:<br />
• Emotional support<br />
• Addressing issues that impede students ability to learn and complete school work<br />
• Developing strategies to help students address issues re: basic needs<br />
• Helping students to develop self esteem through academic success and a variety <strong>of</strong> extra<br />
curricular activities.<br />
• Helping students in communicating and therefore developing working relationships within the<br />
class room<br />
• Assist students in accessing community support for emotional, mental health and addictions<br />
counseling. May require attending community meetings with clients.<br />
• Assist in ensuring that the classroom remains a clean, pleasant and positive environment<br />
• Assist in keeping the school environment free from any type <strong>of</strong> discrimination.<br />
• Developing a strong working relationship with Guelph and Area agencies and resources as<br />
needed. May need to attend community workshops and meetings.<br />
• Assist teacher with academics as required.<br />
• Assist with program data collection and documentation<br />
• Attend meetings with the GYC steering committee and present updates and reports as needed.
Qualifications:<br />
• A Child and Youth Worker Diploma, or equivalent education pertaining to counseling and human<br />
growth and development<br />
• A good understanding <strong>of</strong> the “at risk youth population”<br />
• Minimum 3 years experience working with youth, classroom experience an asset<br />
• Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team<br />
• Organizational and administrative skills in terms <strong>of</strong> report writing and documentation<br />
• Valid drivers license and access to a vehicle with appropriate insurance<br />
• Pr<strong>of</strong>icient in basic computer skills<br />
