Choosing the components for a new car audio<br />

system is easy. Easy because you’re looking at<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong>, the top of the car audio food<br />

chain. All the decisions you will need are right here.<br />

Designed and hand crafted by an American company<br />

It doesn’t matter if you’re building a competition<br />

sound quality vehicle, a day-off<br />

techno-hammer, or just trying to replace the junk<br />

speakers that came with the car. Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong><br />

has every component for a high performance<br />

system: from the technology-jammed source unit to<br />

the battery connections and speaker wire.<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> fanatics were possessed with<br />

leading the pack from the very beginning. In 1973,<br />

22 speakers all running off of one high performance<br />

amplifier. By 1990 we had built the first 15” woofer<br />

for use in car audio and put the intelligence of a<br />

computer in the hands of the listener with the<br />

Symmetry system. In 1992 Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> spent<br />

over a million dollars to bring space-age surface-<br />

mount technology into car audio. That is why we’re<br />

known as fanatics!<br />

Now that the hardest step is out of the way, move<br />

on to the next: Make an installation appointment.<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> dealers have been trained by<br />

instructors from Rockford Technical Training Institute<br />

(RTTI) and know how to do the installation<br />

right the first time. Let them do what they do best:<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> engineers DO NOT have second jobs! The engineers<br />

in Arizona are totally obsessed with sound quality and possessed with<br />

power. There is a Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> amplifier designed for every use:<br />

Studio quality sound reproduction, windshield shattering SPL, or<br />

running 6 speakers and a sub in the family mini-van. Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong><br />

amplifiers are designed by the same people that build Hafler<br />

Professional amplifiers for recording studios. It's Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong>'s<br />

way of crossbreeding undeniable sound quality with the nasty nature of<br />

RAW power. In fact, the Hafler TRANSnova circuit was granted a United<br />

States patent #4,467,288 in 1984 for the unique way audio<br />

signals pass through the amplifier. Even 15 years later no company has<br />

designed a better sound quality circuit. It is difficult to improve<br />

perfection.<br />

The Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> TOPAZ circuit was granted a patent in 1998 due<br />

to the unique way that it rids the<br />

system of noises generated<br />

between the head unit and the<br />

amplifier. So, a system designed<br />

with Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> amplifiers<br />

will sound better because those<br />

recording engineers, the most<br />

critical ears in the business, all<br />

agree: Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong><br />

engineers are doing it right! They<br />

have achieved perfection in<br />

amplifiers.<br />

TRANS•nova (U.S. Patent No. 4,467,288)<br />

(TRANSconductance NOdal Voltage Amplifier) The patented<br />

TRANS•nova circuit plain and simple gives the POWER Series amplifier<br />

recording studio sound quality. The key to our superior sound is<br />

keeping the voltage levels very low through the front end, or preamp<br />

stage. To accomplish this, the TRANS•nova amplifier utilizes two power<br />

supplies. One that drives the critical signal path components at low<br />

voltage, and a second for the strong high current components like the<br />

power supplies and MOSFET devices. Chances are that the music you<br />

listen to was mixed in a recording studio that had TRANS•nova<br />

amplifiers in the master control room. Yeah, Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong><br />

amplifiers are the absolute sound quality leaders when it comes to high<br />

performance car audio.<br />

Trans•ana<br />

(TRANSconductance Active Nodal Amplifier) Trans•ana is TRANS•nova<br />

for the rest of the Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> amplifiers. There are different<br />

components used in each amplifier design depending on the needs of<br />

the power supplies and output devices of that particular amp. Same<br />

studio sound quality, same engineers, and same potential for<br />

devastating power.<br />

Punch vs. POWER<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> designs two different series of amplifiers. Punch and<br />

POWER. The difference? POWER utilizes all the best circuitry, not a<br />

single corner cut. The best sound quality, the most power, the right<br />

features, the most flexibility. Visit the Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> web site and<br />

TOPAZ (U.S. Patent No. 5,751,823)<br />

(Tracking Operation PreAmplifier Zone) TOPAZ is a patented circuit that<br />

simply eliminates noise. Here's how it works. In electronics, everything<br />

needs a ground. When a source unit is plugged into an amplifier<br />

through RCA jacks, there is a ground. The ground is carried through the<br />

RCA cables on what is called the shield. That shield terminates into the<br />

outer ring of the RCA jack itself. Plus, the amplifier has a ground too.<br />

That's the big black wire that gets stripped back and screwed onto a<br />

section of metal on the vehicle. The amp ground is called the Chassis<br />

Ground. (Sound familiar so far?) The TOPAZ circuit allows the amplifier<br />

ground to "TRACK" or move with the source unit ground. In other<br />

words, TOPAZ creates a ground loop KILL ZONE just before the preamp<br />

section. If there is any noise in the ground coming down the RCA line<br />

to the amplifier, TOPAZ tracks it and KILLS it. The result is a 30-4OdB<br />

improvement of the isolation between input ground and chassis<br />

ground.<br />

Power<br />

MEHSA<br />

(Maximum Efficiency Heat Sink Application) MEHSA is a proprietary<br />

process that increases the heat transfer from the MOSFET output<br />

devices to the heatsink. The MEHSA process does this heat<br />

transfer five times better than traditional FET mounting<br />

techniques. The multi-layer insulated metal<br />

MEHSA substrate operates with minimal<br />

thermal resistance, spreading heat<br />

both downward and<br />

outward to quickly<br />

dissipate heat<br />

from each<br />

device<br />

across the<br />

heat sink.<br />

This process<br />

combined with<br />

our DSM technology<br />

and<br />

MOSFET devices<br />

allows us to<br />

squeeze more<br />

watts per cubic<br />

inch from every<br />

output device as well<br />

as provide consistent<br />

thermal stability. MEHSA<br />

will actually cause a<br />

Punch amplifier to "feel"<br />

hotter. That assures that<br />

MEHSA is working. If heat is in<br />

the aluminum sink where it<br />

belongs, then it's not trapped in<br />

the output devices. The<br />

thermal stability, and maximum component reliability.<br />

MOSFET<br />

(Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor)<br />

At Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> we know how our fanatical customers are going to<br />

use our amplifiers. That's why Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> engineers pioneered<br />

the use of MOSFET devices in car audio amplifiers. MOSFETs are<br />

expensive. We could cut corners, but the benefit of the MOSFET device<br />

cannot be ignored. MOSFET devices are the best output device circuit<br />

designers can use in audio amplifiers. They deal with the current<br />

demands of a Punch amplifier, plus they deliver<br />

the most power.<br />

INDIGO<br />

(INDexed Ideal Gain Operation)<br />

"Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> amplifiers have a<br />

certain Punch that other amplifiers just don't have." Sound familiar?<br />

Our INDIGO circuit is one of the reasons. It maximizes the output power<br />

of the amplifier under any electrical condition. If vehicle battery voltage<br />

drops, the INDIGO circuit tightens up and guarantees that the amplifier<br />

will deliver rated power. Remember, IDEAL GAIN for more power.<br />

NOMAD (NOn-Multiplying Advanced Decision)<br />

All amplifiers have to protect themselves [Practice Safe Sound]. The<br />

difficult challenge is to protect the amplifier without restricting system<br />

performance. NOMAD is an intelligent protection system that allows the<br />

amplifier to decide when things are<br />

dangerously out of control. A smart<br />

circuit. The NOMAD circuit<br />

makes advanced<br />

decisions. These<br />

lightning fast<br />

decisions<br />

are based on<br />

voltage, current and<br />

impedance. If one part of<br />

this formula begins to falter, no<br />

problem. Voltage and current are<br />

constantly moving, yet they are dynamic just<br />

like the music. So, if a condition in this<br />

formula truly jeopardizes performance of the amp,<br />

NOMAD protects.<br />

G-class<br />

Having power on demand is a huge secret of the Punch sound. In the<br />

brand new 600a 5 , the fifth channel, designed specifically for running<br />

Subwoofers, has exactly that. Power on demand. With the newest<br />

circuit development in engineering, Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> has developed<br />

the G-Class power amplifier. The G-Class circuit works like a<br />

supercharger for your amplifier. When the primary power supply runs<br />

out of headroom, a secondary supply turns on to provide<br />

supplemental subwoofer power. That’s Supercharged bass.<br />

Flexibility<br />

Built-in Electronic Crossovers<br />

Getting the right amount of amplifier juice into the right speakers;<br />

woofers, mids, tweets, whatever, is the job of the crossover. Built right<br />

into Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> amplifiers is an active crossover that allows you<br />

and your installer to perfectly fine tune the system to both your<br />

listening taste and the interior of the car. Additionally, some amplifiers<br />

have built in Punch Bass. This gives the system an extra Punch at the<br />

frequency that is hardest to reproduce in the car. Deep bass at 45hz<br />

can be added to taste, like hot sauce. Some POWER Series amplifiers<br />

even include a remote Punch Bass. This allows Punch Bass to be at<br />

your fingertips... in the dashboard, where it belongs. A word of caution<br />

about Punch bass; stay clear of poorly constructed buildings, the walls<br />

may tumble.<br />

High-Level Inputs<br />

All Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> Punch amplifiers have the ability to be installed<br />

simply into existing OEM systems, in other words, the system that<br />

came with the car. Authorized Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> dealers have been<br />

through extensive training through RTTI (Rockford Technical Training<br />

Institute) and are highly skilled at maximizing amplifiers into stock<br />

systems. Caution, once you have added an amplifier to your system it<br />

will only be a matter of time before you change out the speakers.<br />

Design<br />

DSM (Discrete Surface Mount)<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> engineers realized 8 years ago that small Discrete<br />

Surface Mount components used in high-tech electronics gave them<br />

more freedom to build circuits and amplifiers that would perform more<br />

like the amplifiers that they were building for the recording studios.<br />

The DSM process is as close to perfection as you can get. Highspeed<br />

robotics place thousands of DSM components per hour.<br />

Once the DSM components have been placed, the PC Board is<br />

then taken to the manufacturing Cell Team for the human<br />

touch. Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> technicians place circuits like<br />

INDIGO power supplies and large capacitors. The Cell<br />

Team then attaches the MEHSA circuit to the heat sinks<br />

just before each and every amplifier made is tested<br />

to full blown power.<br />

Decisions<br />

Making the right choice in an amplifier is simple. Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> is<br />

Car Audio for fanatics. They offer patented sound quality circuits that<br />

have been tested and proven through the years. Ground pounding<br />

power and rugged looks make Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> the "Billy Bad Ass" on<br />

the street. In fact, in 1998 the US Patent office agreed with what<br />

customers have been saying about how great these amplifiers look.<br />

Patent #D401,255 was granted to the Punch heatsink design. So just<br />

The Secret of the Punch Woofer!!!<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> engineers were forced into the high performance<br />

woofer business in 1985 because the amplifiers they were building<br />

completely destroyed every speaker available. What do you want to<br />

do with your system? Push the 180dB ceiling, or just try to hear the<br />

missing bottom end of your newest CD? The answer to the woofer<br />

riddle is Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> Punch woofers. Rockford Acoustic<br />

Designs (RAD) engineers are obsessed with music reproduction<br />

and are possessed with power handling.<br />

The Punch Woofer Formula:<br />

Aluminum + Copper + [Paper] ÷ (Attitude) X Power = Punch Woofers<br />

The insane balance an engineer must conquer is sound quality and<br />

efficiency vs. power handling and reliability. It’s like being an audio<br />

chemist. The perfect balance: design a speaker that drops the<br />

loudest bass ever heard and never breaks! Too much design to<br />

satisfy one and the woofer ends up with none of the other.<br />

RAD engineers have achieved the perfect balance. By using a<br />

sound design philosophy these woofers perform like no other in<br />

both sound quality and power handling.<br />

The secret is out!!!<br />

Aluminum<br />

The inside of a speaker is like an engine. When speakers are playing<br />

at the nominal levels (if there is such a thing), the voice coil and<br />

former get searing hot. An engine has a radiator to keep it cool; the<br />

woofer has a voice coil former. When the woofer is really cranked<br />

(like most of the time), voice coils can reach temperatures of<br />

400°F. Be glad that RAD engineers use aluminum components to<br />

build ALL Punch woofers.. Aluminum keeps high temperatures away<br />

from the voice coil by acting as a heat sink, or a radiator. Cool air is<br />

constantly blown over the coil and out the back vent, just like the<br />

radiator fan in a car. The combination of air passing between the<br />

voice coil/pole piece and the aerodynamically designed vent will<br />

allow the woofer to keep pounding longer, cooler and louder. Think<br />

of it as an air cooled, high performance, aluminum bass engine for<br />

your ears..<br />

Santoprene Rubber Surrounds<br />

The Punch Power DVC and Punch DVC woofers use Santoprene<br />

rubber to assure fast linear motion and total control of the woofer<br />

cone and voice coil. Santoprene was chosen above standard rubber<br />

due to its thermal stability, resulting in the same performance<br />

when it is 10 below as when it is a smokin‘ 120 in the desert.<br />

Santoprene is also thermally molded rather than injection-molded<br />

like standard rubber. This allowed the RAD engineers to select the<br />

proper durometer (stiffness) and thickness of santoprene that<br />

components make sure that the woofer wastes no energy making<br />

anything but music. The result is more boom for the buck. The<br />

Punch DVC Woofers, like the Punch Power DVC, have two 2-layer<br />

4ohm voice coils on the 8", 10" and 12" models and two 4-layer<br />

voice coils on the 15". This type of coil configuration allows<br />

maximum versatility in the installation since each woofer can be<br />

wired as an 8 ohm driver or a 2 ohm driver. Lower impedance loads<br />

allow you to get the most out of the amps, but don’t worry,<br />

just that: turn any great system into a "possessed by<br />

EPX 2<br />

Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong> created the computer controlled<br />

Symmetry EPX2 for total control of the audio spectrum. One<br />

technologically advanced unit containing a 10 channel<br />

crossover, dual input full function preamp, all controlled by a<br />

16 bit computerized RDAT (Remote Data Access Terminal).<br />

Equalization is handled by an optional 28 band or 14 band<br />

EQ card all adjustable from the listening position. Special<br />

features like VDISC and Global Save have made the EPX2 the number one processor among winning sound off<br />

competitors.<br />

PA 2 • OEQ 2<br />

Compact discs that are recorded today are mixed and<br />

mastered by thousands of different record companies,<br />

engineers and of course artists. To get the most out of a<br />

system, an EQ and a PreAmp is a must. The OEQ2 and<br />

the PA2 are the last steps in any high performance system.<br />

The OEQ2 has 10 bands of equalization, frequency warp,<br />

up to 8 volts RMS output, balanced inputs and outputs with<br />

LED meter to assist in system setting. The PA2 puts 5<br />

frequencies, front to rear fade control, a non faded output<br />

and a master gain control all within reach to make quick<br />

Fanatic Q<br />

The fanatic Q components offer high power handling and<br />

unequaled sound quality that will appeal to the most critical<br />

listener. The fanatic Q is the finest sound quality and power<br />

handling system offered by Rockford <strong>Fosgate</strong>.<br />

Midrange / Woofer<br />

The fanatic Q series features a proprietary molded ABS basket<br />

which helps eliminate destructive resonance frequencies yet<br />

remains a light and rigid foundation for the midrange woofer. The<br />

3 layer glass fiber composite cone features a curved geometry<br />

that permits a flat response across a wide bandwidth, including the<br />

critical crossover point.<br />

3 Layers<br />

Sound quality and control are the secrets to the fanatic Q’s<br />

success. Part of that control is the 3-layer glass fiber cone. The<br />

first layer of the cone is woven with fine threads of spun glass, the<br />

second layer uses the exact same glass material in a stronger<br />

honeycomb design. The third layer is exactly as the first but laid<br />

onto the cone in opposite angle weave from the first layer. The<br />

result is an unbelievably strong, light composite that does not<br />

deform or flex during high excursion. The accomplishment is lifelike<br />

reproduction of the music.<br />

The rubber surround on the fanatic Q midrange/woofer de-couples<br />

the cone from the composite basket, by reducing unwanted<br />

reflections between them. These reflections can ruin great sound,<br />

especially in the low frequencies. Inside the heart of the speaker is<br />

a 1.25" multi-layer copper voice coil wound on an anodized<br />

aluminum former. The aluminum voice coil assembly combined<br />

with Aero-port style cooling provides maximum heat transfer away<br />

from the voice coil. This attention to detail provides all of the<br />

design maintains the high power handling while remaining smooth<br />

across a wide bandwidth. The end result is silky smooth high<br />

frequencies with fantastic extension.<br />

Crossover<br />

The fanatic Q crossover boasts an impressive 24dB<br />

(4th order per octave) acoustically symmetrical crossover for the<br />

ultimate in frequency response and driver<br />

transition. This dramatic filter design creates a "sonic brick wall"<br />

that controls and protects both the tweeter and midrange. This<br />

design also provides a clean smooth transition from lower to<br />

higher frequencies without peaks or dips in the response curve.<br />

The fanatic Q crossover features a switchable<br />

0dB/-3dB/-6dB tweeter pad to allow more control for acoustic<br />

integration into the vehicle. The crossover<br />

combines precision tolerance, low loss Mylar capacitors as well as<br />

air and ferrite cored inductors. These expensive components<br />

maintain maximum sound quality for the best in musical<br />

reproduction. All of this means that you and your installer can<br />

tailor the system, not only to those sensitive ears but also to the<br />

The fanatic X mid/woofer features proprietary universal fit baskets<br />

with sizes designed to fit in virtually all automobiles. The curved<br />

geometry mica filled polypropylene cone is de-coupled from the<br />

basket in the same fashion as the fanatic Q series with a Thermo<br />

Plastic Rubber Surround.<br />

Gamma Geometry® is a radical new development in cable technology<br />

and the result of our fanatical research into traditional parallel pair and twisted pair<br />

design. It represents a significant advance on current cable technology.<br />

Why? First an explanation of current designs.<br />

PARALLEL PAIRS<br />

Parallel pairs of conductors are commonly used in speaker cables because they offer low resistance and,<br />

therefore, low signal attenuation. Their design often suffers from poor noise rejection properties due to their<br />

natural tendency to attract electromagnetic and electromechanical noise. In the car environment there are plenty<br />

of both of these electros.<br />

TWISTED PAIRS<br />

Twisted pairs of conductors on the other hand, are repeatedly twisted together along their length and usually<br />

encased in an outer jacket. The continual twisting ensures that the conductors cross each other and are out of<br />

phase at the crossing points. This produces a noise canceling effect. The more twists, the greater the noise<br />

canceling effect, because the conductors cross at an angle closer to the optimum of 90°. However, the more<br />

twists there are, the greater the resistance in the cable, because a coil (resistor) is being produced. This<br />

results in a significantly attenuated (thinned) signal. Both of these technologies have now been superseded by<br />

the new Gamma Geometry® design.<br />

TRIPLE X<br />

The new Gamma Geometry® TripleX dramatically improves interconnects and speaker wire design by using 3<br />

cores in a new and unique weave design. The positive and negative run in a non-aligned waveform and<br />

are held together by a third "inductance control core" (ICC) of pure dielectric. Unlike conventional<br />

twisted pair design, the conductors can repeatedly cross each other closer to the optimum of<br />

90°, and as a result, a significant noise canceling effect is achieved. However, the<br />

positive and negative conductors lay side by side rather than twisting around each<br />

other. There is no coil effect, and therefore no additional resistance or<br />

attenuation.Gamma Geometry® ensures a tight, noise-free and<br />

dynamic musical signal. Its radical new construction method<br />

produces low resistance and increased signal-to-noise ratio,<br />

which means you get a wider, more natural and<br />

Power Enhancements<br />

Don’t cut corners with your power supply. Your amplifiers will only perform as well as your power supply will allow. Rockford<br />

<strong>Fosgate</strong> amplifiers have loosely regulated power supplies called INDIGO. Basically it means amp output power swings with the<br />

vehicle electrical system...more voltage, more power! When the current capability of your car’s power supply is exceeded, the<br />

voltage to your amplifier drops. Guess what? Less power. Don’t let that happen. Install a Stiffening Capacitor. When your<br />

bass drops, your system will clobber! It’s the simplest way to be sure your system gets every bit of current it needs. Think of<br />

it as storage for power.<br />

problems associated with using “Old Fashioned” distribution systems. The CapKit line from The<br />

Connecting Punch provides a functional and good looking system to connect Capacitors to your<br />

system. CapKits are made from high quality components, hand polished and hard gold-plated for the<br />

lowest possible resistance from your battery to your amplifiers. The CapKit gets a Punch Capacitor, an<br />
