DOC.BE Introduction
Belgium may be a small western European country, only a fraction of the size of China, but its
documentary production has placed Belgium firmly on the world film map. Despite being unable
to boast a so-called film industry, the country has produced a number of distinctive filmmakers,
whose works have carried on a long-standing tradition of documentary film, while drawing on a
number of different approaches to film, ranging from realism to surrealism.
The “DOC. BE - Focus on Belgian Contemporary Documentary” includes almost thirty films of
different formats, portraying different features and approaches testifying to the great diversity
and vitality of their production. Some of these films continue the strong and long-standing focus
of documentary films on social concerns, allowing us to look at different realities in Belgium,
Europe and even in other continents from a European perspective. Others go beyond direct
cinema, by taking a fresh look at the relationship between the individual and the world through
film, often by penetrating the psyche of the individuals or through the projection of thoughtprovoking
images, while raising some important issues, such as how to represent the subject
through image and how to intervene in another world with a camera… In an age where images are
so easily acquired, raising such questions has become all the more urgent.
There is no standard answer to such questions. The answer depends on the context. That is why we
would like these Made-in-Belgium films to act as a catalyst for dialogue with local filmmakers and
audiences. A dozen guests with different identities, including filmmakers, curators, critics and
musicians, have been invited to join these gatherings and film screenings, where they will share
their experiences, perceptions and passions with the audience through talks, panels, master
classes and live soundtracks.
Since DOC.BE is a touring project, these dialogues will occur in different spaces of different
Chinese cities and eventually become an organic part of the local cultural reality. That is the
experimental nature of the DOC.BE.,which embodies an expectation of developing some sort of
non-official network for creative/alternative films.DOC.BE is just a starting!
In 1976, The Devinière (a care center) opened
its doors to 19 children, rejected by all, considered
as incurable insane. The founding principle of The
Devinière is based on not rejecting under any pretext
these children. With extreme delicacy, the director
enters their territory. We are witnessing the gestures
of daily life, the elaborate rituals of these adults
trapped in their own universe.
Eleven years after the genocide in Rwanda,
the film follows survivors and torturers during the
so-called “Gacaca trials”. Through three face to
face confrontations, the film weaves a portrait of a
society at war against the still present ideology of
genocide, the difficulty of justice and reconciliation.
So does Isaac who needs the money in order to go
survival in a country where mineral wealth has more
value than human life. The young director filmed
this story in a bittersweet undertone, playing with
close. It questions the confusion felt when faced
with images. ... Not an exercise in nostalgia, but an
Money as explained to children and their
debt in a family, more specifically the parents of
of alternative money.
This is the story of women working behind
the windows, in the red light district of Brussels,
next to the train station. For her first documentary
the filmmaker has spent more then a year “in the
window”, interviewing these women who are not just
prostitutes, talking about these men who are not
just customers. Through the representation of their
lives, we enter a mental space corresponding to the
unique world of each one of them.
A portrait of Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel and on
the same hand a film about the uncertainty of memory
in relation to biography. The filmmaker recorded
a piece of life stories and memories of Kristel. At
first glance the collection of stories appears to make
up a sort of biography, but over time it shows the
impossibility of biography as a coherent narrative.
This is a triple portrait: of a city, a woman and
an attitude to life. The personal story of Rolnik, a
Brazilian psychoanalyst involves the Brazilian dictatorship
of the sixties as well as the Parisian intellectual
climate surrounding Deleuze and Guattari in
the seventies. The film encloses different themes as
the relation to otherness, the connection between
body and power, and the micro politics of desire and
of resistance.
Once upon a journey, ten contemporary storytellers
of different cultures create an imaginary epic
story. They each draw on their own style and own
language to prolong the life of a nameless hero,
traveling from one storyteller to the next. Like an
epic story, this film oscillates between imagination
and reality, the inner world and the outside world,
documentary and fiction.
Instead of fighting against poverty, we fight
against the poor. In Europe, rich areas are surrounded
by poor suburbs where “zero tolerance” is
becoming widespread. The poor in general and the
young immigrants in particular are the subjects of
all fears. Far away from the concept of European
the film critically and emotionally depicts a society
