Report from the Commodore
Here it is March, which means “SPRING” is in the air and the yard. Seems like a really
long winter especially after last year’s “non-winter”. I never thought I’d miss
scrubbin’ the boat, now I can’t wait. Well, I may take that back about mid-July when
the birds start their strafing runs on my deck.
Since last month Rebecca and I have represented Bay View at Toledo Ice Yacht
Club cocktail reception and Elba Mar Boat Club’s Commodore’s Ball honoring Commodore
John White and Lady Tammy Quinn. I had all of the good intentions to make
it to the Super Bowl party at the Club after the EMBC ball but between the ball, the
“after-glow”, the next morning breakfast, talking and saying goodbyes………Let’s
just say the couch missed me. Last weekend was the AYC Ball. P/C Steve and Deb,
P/C Scott and Sharon, (and Josh the go-fer and odd job man) , Laurie and Dave Patlin,
Tom and Tony Blank, Doug Barry, Deb Goedde, Ken Alexander, Rick Wagner
and everybody else who put the work and effort into our room did a fantastic job.
The BVYC room did win an award this year. We even had Elvis in the building. Congratulations
to all of you. Rebecca and I did attend the Ball honoring and saying
goodbye to 2012 Commodore Jim Kessler and Lady Patty and welcoming 2013 Commodore
Tom Mc Donald and Lady Kathy. We had a great time all weekend.
By the time you read this, the casino bus trip will be history and thanks to the Ball
Committee we did fill two buses. I also want to thank the “Roger Boys” Brett and
Brian for their help in putting this trip together. The next and last Ball Committee
event will be the auction on March 23 rd , (I know I wrote March 9 th in last month’s article,
but I misspoke. I’ve learned that from listening to our politicians. It comes in
handy). Time to empty the attic, shed, basement, closets, bilge etc. We will be setting
up tables in the Aux. room for the items. Due to the cancellation of the new member’s
party in December, we have decided to combine this with a new member’s party.
We will be serving spaghetti. Check the flier in the Bay Views for information.
At the February membership meeting, V/C Mark had a proposal to increase our
membership which was passed, unanimously. This will benefit family and AYC
members. I’m sure Mark will have more on this.
The Opening of the Port fundraiser, “South of the Border” party is March 24 th at
Maumee River Yacht Club. It’s $15.00 per person with an “all you can eat” buffet,
door prizes and entertainment by Johnny Rodriguez. Check the fliers for information
and you can contact myself, V/C Mark or R/C Colleen for tickets.
In closing, thanks to the donation from the Auxiliary, we will proudly fly a
“Wounded Warrior Project” flag at the Club this year.
Report from the Vice Commodore
A whole lot of Yacht clubbing going on for being the middle of winter. I got over to
the winter fest at Ottawa River Yacht, seen a lot of Bay View over there having a
good time as usual. That Saturday was the poker run, this year Bay View was a stop
we had a good turnout, it’s a good way to show off our club. Then it was off to Toledo
Ice Yacht Club Commodores reception, had a hard time finding their club
house, All kidding aside it was a very nice event. Then to wrap up the day hit rest of
the clubs on the Ottawa River. The week end after that it was the super bowl party at
the club. A great turn out, plenty of food and a good time was had by all. Great job
R/C Colleen and Mike.
Then before you know its AYC weekend. The Bay View room looked great as it
always does. The crew that puts this together really puts a lot of work and effort into
it and it shows. Thank you all for making our club standout year after year. If you never
been to an AYC Commodore ball you should check it out next year, It’s a good way
meet a lot of good people from other clubs and have some fun in the middle of winter. Also heard a there
was an Elvis sighting there Friday night.
Due to low membership, the following discount (displayed in the Special Announcement section) is
being offered to help increase the number of members. So if you could help get the word out that Bay View
has a lot to offer, great facilities, friendly members and deepwater. We have a lot of competition, most of
clubs in the area are also experiencing low membership and offering some kind of incentive.
March 24 South of the Border Party at MRYC to support the Opening of the
Port. Tickets are still available.
The board has redone the contract for renting out the club—they are behind the
items that are used during a party—if there are any questions please call me or talk to one of the board
members.
Anyone interested in a CCW class please see me.
Bus trip was great time-hope everyone had a good time.
Big thank you to all that brought in food for Nugent Yacht Club—had a chance to talk to Don Collins
their fleet captain before they left and he couldn’t thank us enough—they had a wonderful time and ending
up staying longer then they planned.
Can’t believe another month has passed----THINK SPRING 4 weeks to April 1 and time to think about
getting those boats ready.
Till next month.
AYC Delegate Report
The AYC ball was held the weekend of Feb 15-17 at the Holiday Inn French Quarter, honoring 2012 AYC Commodore
Jim Kessler and Lady Patty. It was a very enjoyable and relaxing weekend, a mini vacation with our boating
friends. Bay View was proud to sponsor a hospitality room, one of 14 that were sponsored by various clubs. Our hard
work paid off as we were awarded third place for our efforts.
The weekend had an overall theme of Tropical Paradise. For our decorating, we started with "Fantasy Island" outside
the room, complete with a working waterfall. Once you passed through the doorway, you were transported to our fantasy
- 1960's Vegas. The room had much to take in, with decorations everywhere, and lots of lights and glitter where
ever you looked. In keeping with the theme, it was "pair a dice". Complete with dancing girls, and a dice game for
additional prizes, it was a fun room to spend time in. And what would Vegas be without an Elvis sighting? A lit
chandelier and sparkling lights everywhere made it a bright room. A mirror like ceiling to reflect the lights and other
activity in the room added to the effect. I would love to say more, but as they say "what happens in Vegas stays in
Vegas". We took good care of the room, even leaving it cleaner than when we started.
Thanks to all of the work put in by the many members of the committee and others who pitched in to help. For all of
the creativity and decorating work, we could not have done it without Sharon Kneisel, and her helpers Deb Goedde,
and Laurie Patlin. The Waterfall was put together by Tom Blank, with additional help from Dave Patlin. For the music,
and coordinating the bar supplies and other help Tony Blank was a big help. Special thanks to Rick Kronsperger
for setting up the bar, and working tirelessly behind the bar. For food, Steve Cumerow's pulled pork was delicious as
always, and Steve was in Florida and was not there to enjoy. Big thanks to Ken Alexander, and his lady Alberta. Ken
provided the trailer for transport of all our decorations, gear and everything. He was there early Friday to help set up,
and Sunday for tear down, as well as helping in the room, and bartending on Saturday. Tim Krell, and his brother David
(future member) were there for the weekend, and were a big help early Sunday with tear down. Doug Berry and
Vicky Stockard were there Friday for setup, and helped out other times during the weekend. Others helping out included
Debbie Barry, Rick Wagner, Commodore Mike Walsh, Vice Commodore Mark Gensler, Sue Blank, Scott,
Erin and Josh Kneisel. If I missed anyone, I apologize, there was a lot going on that weekend.
It was a great group of people, most of whom were there all weekend and were willing to help out with whatever was
needed. Along with the work, there was much relaxation and socializing, with drinks to wash it all down. There were
many other Bay View members in attendance over the weekend who enjoyed a good time. We hope to see more
members at this event in the future.
