Report from the Commodore
I would like to thank Maury and Connie Gingrich for the leadership and Ideas that
has brought a much-needed update to the Commodores Room. The room was totally
redone from the floor up. There is new carpet, the walls have been painted, new
ceiling tile was put in, and the wall hanging light fixtures were painted to bring new life
to them. Included in the renovation project was the Auxiliary meeting room, which
was also painted, and new carpeting put down. I would like to acknowledge every one
who helped and spent a Saturday or Sunday or both working on the project. For fear
of missing some one I will say THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!
As most of you know our membership is down and the Vice Commodore Is mounting
a membership drive to try and reverse this. If you have family or friends who are
boaters or are just looking for a friendly place to join, bring them out to the club. We
have a lot to offer everyone, and until the end of June the club is waving the initiation
fee.
I have as a result of the passing of several members over the last year decided to
implement a contact protocol. After the initial contact to any club member is made, if
not the Commodore, the person contacted should call The Commodore as soon as
possible. The commodore will call the bridge, the board chairman, and the president
of the Blue Gavel. Once this is completed these individuals will begin calling other
members so as to pass the word as quickly as possible.
Hi Guys,
Spring can be felt in the air. By spring there is hope of many new members
enjoying our club, as our club is going in a new direction to fill the membership
ranks. Thanks to my membership team for their ideas and help in getting the
membership drive off on the right track. Soon there will be a new pamphlet
handed to each applicant, which will outline the benefits of joining the club.
The pamphlet will be available to members to give to prospective applicants.
There will be an Open House on Saturday, March 28, 2009, 2-5pm in hopes of
attracting new members. BVYC members are encouraged to attend and to
bring interested family and friends.
The interview committee and I have been busy interviewing new applicants.
Applications have been received from Melinda Delvaux, Lindsey Collins, Carl
Cochenour, Scott Aldrich, Christopher Kristenak, Jim Hamblin, William
Seyfried Jr, Terry Obliske, Patty Heigel, David Scardina, and Dennis Czesak.
Middle Bass Island Yacht Club visited BVYC on February 7 th . Thank you
Fleet Captain Ben Davis and RC Greg Snyir for a great job organizing the
event. Thank you Bay View members for attending and welcoming our
visitors.
Deb and I are attending the AYC Commodore’s Ball at the Crowne Plaza. We
are hoping to see you there. Since the ball is after the deadline for this article, I
will report on it next month.
I want to remind everyone that the Winter Ball will be held on March 20,
2009, at Graystone Banquet Hall. As we know from the past, this will be an
elegant affair. Tickets are available at the bar. Hope to see you there.
Last but not least, I would like to encourage all members to involve themselves
in the membership drive through actions and words. This is an important part
of our club for which we should always strive to achieve. Please forward to me
any suggestions you may have. And remember, it’s YOUR club!
See you at the club.
A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The
audience would be different each week so the magician allowed
himself to do the same tricks over and over again. There was only
one problem: the captain's parrot saw the shows each week and
began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he
understood he started shouting in the middle of the show: "Look,
it's not the same hat". "Look, he is hiding the flowers under the
table". "Hey, why are all these cards the Ace of Spades?" The
magician was furious but couldn't do anything; it was, after all, the
captain's parrot. One day the ship had an accident and sank. The
magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the
ocean with the parrot, of course! They stared at each other with hate,
but did not utter a word. This went on for a day and another and
another. After a week the parrot said: "OK, I give up. Where's the
boat?"
Two Irishmen, Patrick Murphy and Shawn O'Brian grew up together and were lifelong friends. But alas, Patrick developed
cancer, and was dying. While on his deathbed, Patrick called to his buddy, Shawn, "O'Brian, come 'ere. I 'ave a request for
ye." Shawn walked to his friend's bedside and kneels.
"Shawny ole boy, we've been friends all our lives, and now I'm leaving 'ere. I 'ave one last request fir ye to do."
O'Brian burst into tears, "Anything Patrick, anything ye wish. It's done."
"Well, under me bed is a box containing a bottle of the finest whiskey in all of Ireland. Bottled the year I was born it was.
After I die, and they plant me in the ground, I want you to pour that fine whiskey over me grave so it might soak into me
bones and I'll be able to enjoy it for all eternity."
O'Brian was overcome by the beauty and in the true Irish spirit of his friend's request, he asked, "Aye, tis a fine thing you
ask of me, and I will pour the whiskey. But, might I strain it through me kidneys first?"
