48 CHAPTER 4 Introduction VELOCITY Velocity is one of the preferred modulation sources of keyboard players: A light key attack generates a low velocity value for the given note, a heavy touch generates a high velocity value. In the Virus you have ten modulation targets available for Velocity. ACCESS VIRUS OS4 49 Unison Mode UNISON MODE When we talked about the oscillators, we mentioned that by subtly detuning signals, you can beef up sounds and achieve string-like sounds. The Virus is equipped with features that allow you to take this type of tonal manipulation a step further. On of these is the so-called UNISON MODE. It enables you to initiate two or more voices for each note played, which in turn lets you detune many oscillators. UNISON MODE also offers the option of spreading the voices generated by one note in the stereo panorama and shifting the phases of their LFOs so that all types of periodic effects can be used to produce an even more exciting signal. it determines how ”fat” the sound will be. You can use the UNISON Detune parameter to determine to which extent the active voices are detuned. UNISON PanSpread distributes them uniformly across the stereo panorama, a process by which you can also determine the width of a sound’s stereo base. When you activate UNISON mode for a sound, it can still be played polyphonically. However, depending on the number of voices you’ve dialed in, its polyphony will of course be considerably reduced in UNISON mode. The most efficient and the standard setting is UNI- SON mode = Twin, where two voices are played for every note. In the ”OFF” position, one voice per note is played.
