26 Assessing Smoking and Drinking in the Development of Tongue Cancer and Evaluation of Quality of Life Following Different Treatment Options – A Feasibility Study This is a feasibility study to assess tobacco and alcohol use among patients diagnosed with tongue cancer and to evaluate their quality of life after making decisions about cancer treatment. Self-administered surveys will be mailed to newly diagnosed subjects over a one-year period of rapid case ascertainment. Dr. John Graff is the PI of this National Cancer Institute funded study. Luminal Lipid Exposure, Genetics & Colon Cancer Risk This case-control study of colon cancer risk will determine whether specific genotypes are associated with risk of colon cancer and whether the effect of a high fat diet on the risk of colon cancer is more pronounced in the subjects with these genotypes. Dr. Ikuko Kato is the PI of this study which is funded by the National Cancer Institute. SEER Patterns of Care Study Each year, the National Cancer Institute and 14 national SEER sites collaborate in this study to assess trends in treatment for selected cancer sites. This study examines trends in treatment by age, race/ ethnicity, gender and other demographic characteristics, in relation to tumor morphology, hospital and insurer characteristics and the impact of treatment changes on survival. Dr. Ikuko Kato is the local PI. This study was funded by the National Cancer Institute. Feasibility of Expanded Patterns of Care Study of Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers This expanded Patterns of Care Study will assess the feasibility of enrolling adolescent and young adult cancer patients in a study to determine current treatment patterns for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Germ Cell Cancer and Osteo, Ewing’s and Synovial Sarcoma. Participants will complete a short, online survey and are also asked for consent to obtain their medical records. Dr. Ikuko Kato is the local PI of this National Cancer Institute funded study. Does Use of Alternative Medicine Delay Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer? The primary goal of this population-based study is to assess whether complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is associated with a delay in initiation of conventional cancer treatment for head and neck cancer, which would predict poorer survival. Dr. Ikuko Kato is the PI for this National Cancer Institute funded project. Molecular Epidemiology of Steroid Hormone Metabolism in Relation to Breast Cancer Risk in African Americans This study seeks to genotype cases and controls for specifically or predominantly African American polymorphisms at steroid hormone metabolism loci and to test for associations of these polymorphisms with breast cancer risk. This study was funded by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Dr. Ikuko Kato is the PI on this study. Does Completeness of SEER Follow-up Vary by Race/Ethnicity? The purpose of this study is to evaluate the completeness of follow-up information for all patients in the Detroit SEER Registry who were diagnosed with lung, breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer and all children who were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or brain cancer during 1992-2002. For each of these cancer types, we will explore the impact of race/ethnicity on the completeness of follow-up information, as well as other patient-, tumor-, or medical care provider-associated factors. Results of this study will increase our understanding of possible biases in research studies of cancer survivors and identify areas where more intensive follow-up efforts are indicated. The Co-Investigators of this study are Dr. Ikuko Kato and Dr. Jeannette Korczak. This study was funded by the National Cancer Institute. Hormonal Factors and Lung Cancer: A Potential Target for Therapy The goal of this study is to further our understanding of the role of estrogen-related tumor characteristics in predicting sex-specific survival after a lung cancer diagnosis. Specifically, tumors from 275 early-onset lung cancer cases (144 men, 131 women) will be examined for estrogen receptor beta status and aromatase expression. We will determine the proportion of tumors that are ER-β positive and/ or express aromatase. We will also assess whether ER-β expression and aromatase expression are correlated, and whether expression is associated with gender. Lastly, we will evaluate whether ER-β and aromatase expression is associated with survival. Dr. Michele Cote is the PI for this National Cancer Institute funded study. Oxidative Stress, Antioxidants and Racial Disparities in Prostate Cancer This study will examine three genes in the oxidative stress pathway along with intake of three antioxidants to determine whether variation in the genes modifies prostate cancer risk associated with intake of each of the antioxidants. Dr. Cathy Bock is the PI on this National Cancer Institute funded study. Analysis of Ethnic Admixture in Prostate Cancer The goal of this research proposal is to use a novel approach to gene mapping, admixture mapping, to find potential prostate cancer susceptibility genes in a group of African-American men. Dr. Cathy Bock is the PI on this Department of Defense funded study.
