5i6 Period <strong>of</strong> the Five Good Emperors<br />

do to Caesar. But they who are hired for pay swear to<br />

regard the safety <strong>of</strong> Caesar before all things; and you who<br />

have received so many and such great favors, will you not<br />

swear, or when you have sworn, will you not abide by<br />

your oath? And what shall you swear? Never to be<br />

disobedient, never to make any charges, never to find<br />

fault with anything that he has given, and never unwillingly<br />

to do or to suffer anything that is necessary.<br />

oath like the soldier's oath? <strong>The</strong> soldiers swear not to<br />

prefer any man to Caesar: in this oath men swear to honor<br />

themselves before all.<br />

"Who may meet, assemble, and have a corporation;<br />

those who shall be willing to pay a monthly contribution<br />

for funerals, may meet in that association (collegium) and<br />

may not convene more than once a month under guise <strong>of</strong><br />

that association, this session being for the sake <strong>of</strong> collecting<br />

a fund from which the dead may be buried."<br />

it be favorable, fortunate and wholesome to the emperor<br />

Caesar Trajan Hadrian Augustus and to the entire house<br />

<strong>of</strong> the same, to us and ours, and to our association—both<br />

well and earnestly shall we engage ourselves honorably<br />

to escort the departure <strong>of</strong> the dead. <strong>The</strong>refore we one and<br />

all <strong>of</strong> us must be harmonious in making proper contributions<br />

in order that we may endure a long time.<br />
