rejected, and none shall be received from known persons if<br />

As to hidden treasures, if one shall find such a treasure<br />

on his ovra estate, he shall possess the treasure; if on another's,<br />

he shall give half to the owner <strong>of</strong> the estate; if on<br />

public ground, he shall<br />

divide equally with the imperial<br />

treasury.<br />

Slaves shall not be killed by their masters.<br />

Those who<br />

deserve death shall be condemned by judges only.<br />

<strong>The</strong> 'sale <strong>of</strong> men and women slaves as gladiators or for<br />

vile purposes is forbidden, provided no sufficient reason for<br />

such sale exists.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re shall be no houses <strong>of</strong> correction (ergastula) for<br />

slaves or freedmen.<br />

In case a master is assassinated in his own house, not all<br />

his slaves shall be examined, but those only who are near<br />

enough to the master to know something <strong>of</strong> the deed.<br />

Though everywhere he erected countless buildings, he<br />

inscribed his name on none <strong>of</strong> them excepting the temple to<br />
