V. <strong>The</strong> Municipal Law <strong>of</strong> Julius Caesar<br />

With regard to those streets which are or shall be in the<br />

city <strong>of</strong> Rome or within a radius <strong>of</strong> one mile from the city<br />

<strong>of</strong> Rome,—wherever this zone shall be continually built<br />

up,—the owner <strong>of</strong> any building before which any such<br />

street shall run, shall maintain the same to the satisfaction<br />

<strong>of</strong> the aedile, to whom this part <strong>of</strong> the city shall have been<br />

assigned in accordance with this law; and that sedile shall<br />

see to it that all persons, before whose buildings any<br />

streets run, which they shall be obliged by this law severally<br />

to maintain, shall severally maintain the same to his<br />

satisfaction; and he shall see to it that no water remains<br />

standing in any such place which would hinder the public<br />

from the convenient use <strong>of</strong> the street.<br />

<strong>The</strong> curule aediles and the plebeian aediles who are now<br />

in <strong>of</strong>fice, and whoever after the passing <strong>of</strong> this law shall<br />

have been made or created aediles or shall have entered<br />

upon this <strong>of</strong>fice, shall, within the next five days after they<br />

shall have been elected or shall have entered upon this<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice,<br />

decide either by agreement or by lot in what part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the city each one <strong>of</strong> them shall have charge <strong>of</strong> the repairing<br />

and paving <strong>of</strong> the streets in the city <strong>of</strong> Rome or<br />

within a mile <strong>of</strong> the city <strong>of</strong> Rome, and shall have supervision<br />

<strong>of</strong> that work.<br />

In those places which shall be in the<br />

district thus assigned to each one <strong>of</strong> the aediles in accordance<br />

with this law, he shall have supervision <strong>of</strong> the<br />

repairing and maintenance <strong>of</strong> the streets, as shall be required<br />

in accordance with this law.<br />

In the case <strong>of</strong> a street for the maintenance <strong>of</strong> which a<br />

contract in conformity with this law must be let, the aedile<br />

whose duty it shall be to let the contract for the maintenance<br />

<strong>of</strong> this street shall let out the same through the
