Charter <strong>of</strong> Chalcis 195<br />

except with the sanction <strong>of</strong> the Athenian<br />

people; nor will I put a resolution to vote against the community<br />

or any private citizen when neither has been summoned<br />

to trial. Moreover if an embassy comes, I will introduce<br />

it to the council and assembly within ten days<br />

to the best <strong>of</strong> my ability whensoever I am serving as prytanis.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se things I will maintain for the Chalcidians<br />

as long as they are obedient to the Athenian people.<br />

An embassy coming from Chalcis shall administer the<br />

oath to the Athenians and shall register the names <strong>of</strong><br />

those who have taken it.<br />

It shaU be the function <strong>of</strong> the<br />

generals to see that all take the oath.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Chalcidians on their part shall swear as follows:<br />

I will not revolt against the Athenian people by any<br />

plan or contrivance, by word or deed, nor will I obey any<br />

one who does revolt ; and if anyone revolts, I will denounce<br />

him to the Athenians. Furthermore I will pay to the<br />

Athenians whatever contribution I shall persuade the<br />

Athenians to accept, and shall be as faithful and just an<br />

ally as I am able; and I shall bring succor and aid to the<br />

Athenian people if anyone attempts to harm the Athenian<br />

people.<br />

All the adult Chalcidians shall take the oath. Whoever<br />

shall refuse to swear shall be disenfranchised and his<br />

property shall be confiscated, and a tenth <strong>of</strong> his goods shall<br />

be sacred to the Olympian Zeus. An embassy <strong>of</strong> Athenians<br />

coming to Chalcis shall, in cooperation with the commissioners<br />

<strong>of</strong> oaths in Chalcis, impose the oath and register<br />

the names <strong>of</strong> the Chalcidians who have taken it. . . .<br />

This decree and oath the secretary <strong>of</strong> the council at<br />

Athens shall engrave on a stone pillar and set it up on the<br />

Acropolis at the expense <strong>of</strong> the Chalcidians. <strong>The</strong> council<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Chalcidians shall also engrave it and set it up in the<br />
