of Khate is represented by an Egyptian artist as wear<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted hat, while ano<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> time of Rameses III.<br />

(about 1 200 b. c.) wears a skull cap (or perhaps a bandeau).<br />

Both head-dresses are found <strong>in</strong> connection with <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

Sculptures and Inscriptions near Ivriz<br />

and a greater political <strong>in</strong>fluence.<br />

<strong>the</strong> people of our <strong>in</strong>scriptions.<br />

With <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong><br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted hat is <strong>the</strong> older<br />

fashion, as is proved by<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact that it is worn<br />

by <strong>the</strong> gods, even at a<br />

time when we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs wear<strong>in</strong>g a skull<br />

cap or bandeau, as e. g.,<br />

on <strong>the</strong> sculptures of<br />

Boghazkoi and Ivriz.<br />

Fashions, like o<strong>the</strong>r products<br />

of civilization, migrate<br />

freely from people<br />

to people, particularly<br />

from those who possess<br />

both a higher civilization<br />

From <strong>the</strong> dates of <strong>the</strong> abovementioned<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs of Khate with some degree of certa<strong>in</strong>ty<br />

we may <strong>the</strong>refore argue for <strong>the</strong> approximate dates of those<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs who on <strong>the</strong>ir sculptures appear with a similar headdress,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are related to each o<strong>the</strong>r or not.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>gly,<br />

such of <strong>the</strong> latter as wear a high po<strong>in</strong>ted hat, e.g., <strong>the</strong><br />

Pseudo-Sesostris <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pass of Karabel, will perhaps date<br />

from a time prior to Rameses III. (1200 b. c), while those<br />

who appear with a skull cap or bandeau, e. g., <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gs on<br />

<strong>the</strong> monuments of Boghazkoi, must be regarded as later<br />

than Rameses II., i. e., later than 1300 b. c. Thus <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>scription of <strong>the</strong> Pseudo-Sesostris <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pass of Karabel<br />

would be older than 1200, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scriptions accompany<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> Boghazkoi sculptures later than 1300 b. c.
