by <strong>the</strong> help of <strong>the</strong> former.<br />

Or aga<strong>in</strong> we f<strong>in</strong>d a human head<br />

<strong>in</strong> relief with a tuft above and someth<strong>in</strong>g look<strong>in</strong>g like a handle<br />

or support underneath, while <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>scriptions this head,<br />

perhaps only <strong>the</strong> fore-part of it, is merely outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> relief;<br />

<strong>in</strong> still o<strong>the</strong>rs we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>stead only a zigzag l<strong>in</strong>e produced.<br />

It is<br />

of course evident that <strong>the</strong> simplified and reduced symbols<br />

are of later date than <strong>the</strong> full hieroglyphs, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong><br />

former must have been developed from <strong>the</strong> latter. For<br />

this development <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of<br />

a cursive writ<strong>in</strong>g, exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

alongside <strong>the</strong> hieroglyphic writ<strong>in</strong>g used <strong>in</strong> connection with<br />

stone and monuments, was <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> responsible, for this<br />

cursive writ<strong>in</strong>g naturallv tended to become more and more<br />

simple, thus gradually depart<strong>in</strong>g fur<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> hieroglyphic<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al. It is <strong>in</strong> particular one circumstance which<br />

brought this result about.<br />

purposes<br />

Suppose one wished for bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

to transfer this picture writ<strong>in</strong>g to an even surface,<br />

it would practically have been impossible to carve all <strong>the</strong><br />

characters <strong>in</strong> relief, or engrave or depict <strong>the</strong>m completely.<br />

It would have consumed by far too much time to do this.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, as also happened <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> development<br />

of cuneiform writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> pictures were, for bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

purposes, drawn or scratched <strong>in</strong> outl<strong>in</strong>e only.<br />

But as a necessary<br />

consequence, this verv cursive writ<strong>in</strong>g produced many an<br />

additional l<strong>in</strong>e, want<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al pictures.<br />

To such an<br />

extent this manner of writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> outl<strong>in</strong>e- was imitated <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>scriptions that we meet not only with <strong>in</strong>scriptions with<br />

<strong>in</strong>cised characters <strong>in</strong> outl<strong>in</strong>e, but also characters partially<br />

outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> relief. Thus we see <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of cursive<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> two directions at once ; <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />

hieroglyphs occurr<strong>in</strong>g, firstly, <strong>in</strong> simplified form, and secondly,<br />

amplified bv additional strokes.<br />

If now it is evident that <strong>the</strong> cursive writ<strong>in</strong>g is a development<br />

of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al full picture writ<strong>in</strong>g, it is no less clear<br />

that <strong>the</strong> more traces we f<strong>in</strong>d of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of <strong>the</strong> cursive<br />

writ<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> later <strong>in</strong> general <strong>the</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g must be.<br />
