Tayif. Doughty had lived nearly two years <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tents<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Arabs — not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lordly style warranted by his<br />

means, but as one of <strong>the</strong>ir equals, shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir privations<br />

and hardships ; so that his narrative is a rare source of<br />

knowledge upon <strong>the</strong> present manners and customs among<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bedou<strong>in</strong>s of Central Arabia. And ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> con-<br />

servative character of <strong>the</strong> Arabs, it is also a valuable objective<br />

commentary upon numerous passages of <strong>the</strong> Old Testament.<br />

The most important geographical <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong><br />

Doughtv's work is that concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Wadi el-Hamdh<br />

(runn<strong>in</strong>g from Med<strong>in</strong>a northwest and <strong>the</strong>n west to <strong>the</strong> Red<br />

Sea), which he and Burton to a certa<strong>in</strong> extent discovered<br />

anew, and that concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and course of<br />
