Re<strong>in</strong>aud, who <strong>in</strong><br />

1799 made a tour from Qatif on <strong>the</strong> eastern<br />

coast to Der'iya, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terior of Yemama, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> capital<br />

of <strong>the</strong> newly established dom<strong>in</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> Wahhabites. A<br />

very brief report of this journey, undertaken by order of <strong>the</strong><br />

East India Company, and which was <strong>the</strong>refore merely for<br />

Aden<br />

commercial purposes, was given bv Seetzen (see below) <strong>in</strong><br />

1805. 1 Re<strong>in</strong>aud, while fifteen days on <strong>the</strong> way to Der'iya,<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>re only eight days. Though contribut<strong>in</strong>g noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to science through this journey, he was <strong>the</strong> first to<br />

visit that <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g region, and was also <strong>the</strong> only European<br />

who saw <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>the</strong> Wahhabites at its height, and<br />

(whence sazvahil, "<strong>in</strong>habitants of <strong>the</strong> coast," <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> Suaheli <strong>in</strong><br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>ast Africa), but ra<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> old word for "frank<strong>in</strong>cense,"<br />

Hebrew shekheleth ( Exod. 30 34), Ethiopic sekh<strong>in</strong>. Probably also Shihr<br />

:<br />

(Shehr'), <strong>the</strong> name for <strong>the</strong> coast of <strong>the</strong> "Frank<strong>in</strong>cense Country," is but a<br />

variant of this word for " frank<strong>in</strong>cense."<br />
